providing lunch for builders?

we’ve got builders in for three weeks replacing a kitchen.
We’ve set them up with a kettle and coffee/sugar/tea bags/milk and biscuits. There are three or four of them.
They’ve just asked my husband for lunch/ sandwiches. Is this the done thing; the expected thing?

How can you make anyone lunch without a functioning kitchen anyway? Maybe they were joking.

Ownedbykitties · 30/06/2026 23:29

Who are these people? 😮

I had builders for seven weeks and noticed they were buggering off for almost two hours for lunch each day. I started making soup each day and served it with nice hot bread and they loved it . The job got done in much shorter time and they did lots of extra little jobs for me. I provided cold drinks on hot days too and teas and coffees. It was well worth it for me and the happy atmosphere in the house was lovely. Not sure how I would have felt if they had asked for it though?

How strange but no they bring their own lunch

Cheeky sod’s no it’s not!! I’m from a family of builders and they are grateful for tea and biscuits and would never dream of asking for anything else!! If they ever got a bacon sandwich at the end of the week on a job it would make their day but they’d never expect it, and definitely wouldn’t ask for it!

I would say 'don't you have wives or girlfriends who could prepare lunch for you ?', it's a bit of cheek expecting you to lay on lunch for them, thing is would they do a shoddy job in return for no lunch, maybe meet them halfway, purchase a cheap sliced loaf, cheap marg, and some value cheese and ham (from somewhere like Iceland store), and say to them 'feel free to make a sandwich'.......😊

Shoddy job = no payment and word spread around to not use their company

PeachyPeachTrees · 01/07/2026 08:47

Absolutely not the norm! I make teas and coffees and if it's a hot day, some cold drinks. Maybe it was a joke because you can't easily prepare a lunch with no kitchen.

Massive no. Also, it won't be three weeks. It will be double that by the time they've actually finished.

Not necessarily. Ours was done in 3 weeks with only 2 men

whose employer provides free lunch for their workers?

none!!!

geumsun · 02/07/2026 09:28

I've had builders at mine for months. They've never asked for food and always offer to buy me lunch from the shop when they go (I work from home). I do provide copious amounts of tea, coffee and diet coke though.

Summer26 · 02/07/2026 09:35

I have done it, yes. They were very grateful and suprised. To ask seems cheeky. I might make a comment like did you forget yours, otherwise you'll be doing it every day.

Most food service employers.

Whatifwewereallperfect · 04/07/2026 09:29

Not normal in the UK but on the continent very normal unless you want them disappearing for the afternoon!

Maybe not now, but I certainly remember that my first employer, BP, provided very cheap lunches. We typically paid around 5p or 10p - although this was back in the late 1980s (but, even then, 10p was ridiculously cheap - allowing for inflation that would be about 30p today).

Although not a free lunch, I recall that my uncle (who ran a removals business) always provided a free breakfast to all his employees.

Likewise, my DB used to work for Sainsburys a while back and warehouse workers in store and bakers who came in early would always get a free breakfast.

Although, to be fair, I believe that they don't do that any more (if only because there aren't any real bakers any more in Sainsbury's stores - they used to employ actual bakers to bake bread and rolls etc instore - today it's a "bake-off" operation where they just heat up chilled or frozen products).

Anglo American does across all the mines but also in the head offices

Not expected st all here, but we're awash with cafes etc. If you're miles from shops, maybe, but in general I think very cheeky
