providing lunch for builders?

we’ve got builders in for three weeks replacing a kitchen.
We’ve set them up with a kettle and coffee/sugar/tea bags/milk and biscuits. There are three or four of them.
They’ve just asked my husband for lunch/ sandwiches. Is this the done thing; the expected thing?

Have never been asked but have always left tea, coffee, biscuits.
I do offer toast as well if they turn up early morning, and have made a batch of cheese scones now and then. But they always bring their own lunches and eat them in their vans.

If they're good and reliable may well be worth accommodating them if you can but no, not usual to provide lunch.

At this time of year I would try to provide fridge space so they can store their own lunches and cold drinks. Ice cubes in the freezer would probably be welcome and pre-chilled water to drink if your mains supply gets warm.

We have a lovely builder who's worked for us for years. When we had a lot of work on we used to give him a bacon sandwich if he arrived before 8am. He's the most reliable tradesman we've ever known.
If builders are here for a while I sometimes get them a doughnut in the afternoon, but never lunch.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 30/06/2026 18:20

No, my late DH was a decorator, definitely not. They should bring/buy their own lunch. I've never heard of this.

inappropriateraspberry · 30/06/2026 18:23

no! We had builders in for months doing a big extension. They brought their own garden table, kettle etc and set it all up in the garage. The only thing I gave them were some ice lollies as they were working through the summer!

Markovenchip · 30/06/2026 18:35

I would say 'don't you have wives or girlfriends who could prepare lunch for you ?', it's a bit of cheek expecting you to lay on lunch for them, thing is would they do a shoddy job in return for no lunch, maybe meet them halfway, purchase a cheap sliced loaf, cheap marg, and some value cheese and ham (from somewhere like Iceland store), and say to them 'feel free to make a sandwich'.......😊

BlueYazoo · 30/06/2026 18:38

Cheeky fuckers 😂

MN lets you down sometimes. Saw the title and was hoping to be entertained by a discussion of which M&S picky bits might be most suitable for builders.

You might get a bit of push back on that post.....

We have had builders in for about 10 weeks . When my DD or her husband are on days off from work (they work shifts ) the builders are given bacon butties and plenty of tea and coffee each day .
I am disabled so the most I can manage when I’m here alone is tea or cold drinks and lolly ices in the hot weather .
The workman very much appreciate this and when I was chatting to the plasterer he told me that they will bend over backwards for clients like us .

'Wives or girlfriends'??? Are you for real?

SourdoughSally · 30/06/2026 19:16

We once had a builder who was here for so long (months and months) that he often used to bring me lunch! His wife would make a huge pot of curry and he'd plate us both one up for our lunch when he came the next day.

MmeDubois7 · 30/06/2026 19:27

No. They are adults. It's up to them to bring their own food.

DugnuttEyeBoogies · 30/06/2026 19:32

Absolutely not! Cheeky fuckers!

are they also stringing out the job? 3-4 workmen take 3-4 weeks to replace just a kitchen???
Is it a very complicated job? Proper building works?

Shinyandnew1 · 30/06/2026 19:44

No! Can’t they bring their sandwiches to work like the rest of us!?

Follows thread 😂

No!!

ToadRage · 30/06/2026 20:34

I have seen many builders in my time and they have never asked for lunch. We provide tea coffee, biscuits, cake if i was meant to be studying but they brought their own lunch or went to local chippy.
Our kitchen fitter didn't ask for anything other than being allowed to use the toilet. Apparently some people don't allow that!

desperatemum1234 · 30/06/2026 20:47

Tea/coffee/cans of Red Bull when it was hot, fruit, biscuits (though my offerings paled with one set of builders who brought their own biscuits, Fortum & Mason no less!). Sometimes I bought protein bars.
Lunch: absolutely not.

BeMintSwan · 30/06/2026 21:50

No!

GordanoServices · 30/06/2026 22:04

They bring a packed lunch. Ours even brought their own kettle and milk though I told them they could use ours. They were around for many weeks. Sometimes I made them a cake and they were very grateful.

Is this a joke?

labubu1 · 30/06/2026 22:33

Absolutely not! Unbelievably cheeky. The only people I know of who get a free lunch on the job are working for huge tech companies like Google.

Ewg9 · 30/06/2026 22:54

no, not normal to provide lunch. tea, coffee or biscuits but not lunch the cheeky bastards. They are there to do a job. My mum would make fry ups for the workmen on our house when it was being renovated but, i felt it was odd at the time. She has always been a super hostess and the workmen appreciated it because it wasn't normal for them.

That's a bit different from asking the client to make them lunch though.
