Does anyone else feel anxious and depressed about this weird heat and climate change?

This week I've felt a horrible sense of foreboding and sadness. It's felt more like Thailand than Yorkshire and it's just not right.
People are clamouring for air conditioning but fighting fossil fuels with fossil fuels ( i.e climate change with things that run off leccy) can't be right can it? The dying wildlife snd wild fires are awful. Even a box of salted caramel Lidl cones can't lift this awful feeling of doom
How do others feel?

People just don't care though OP. I live near a school and see people parked along my road with their engines running, spewing out hot fumes because they want the aircon. The irony is lost on them.

You're right, but what are you doing about it? What are most people doing?

40 years ago me and DH decided not to have children with climate change being one of the (major) reasons.

It's frightening how hot the last few days have been and the temperatures in Europe are even worse.

I am honestly glad that at my age I will not face that many more summers and so so glad we chose not to have children. I worry about my neices' and nephews' children

Look at Zeke Hausfather and Katharine Hayhoe - realistic non scare mongering climate scientists. They’re both really inspiring and have helped me with my crippling climate change anxiety.

On mumsnet when these discussions happen you are 100% guaranteed that some smug person will arrive and announce that they didn’t have children because of climate change.

They make me so angry.
Well @mydogisthebest luckily I did. Because at some point you and your smug husband will need someone
else’s children to help you as you age. Because your dog isn’t going to be much help if you need a dr or someone to grow your food. So thank goodness for the brave women who have had children.
I would also like to point out to you that I can tell you the names of multiple climate scientists who have also had children recently. These posts are always from scared people looking for help - and you and your smug post are not helpful.

I agree OP. It’s frightening and I feel really helpless about it. I really want politicians to start talking about as a number one agenda item.

It's happened before; it'll happen again.

How exactly do you enjoy it? When you have to continue life, looks after and keep kids safe in it. Still carrying on with life while the country you live in is not equipt for these temperatures
many are not able to simply cope with it they struggle and don’t want to just enjoy it.

I remember the heatwave of 1976 when some areas had stand pipes and there was a temperature of 32C or above for 15 consecutive days. We also didn't have any rain for 2 months. I was a young teenager at the time so wasn't worried about it, but I expect if mumsnet had been around then
adults would have been posting about how worrying it was.

Yes, there were lots of people at the time who were worrying about it as they suspected it might be the harbinger of even worse in the future. As, indeed, it was.

Not much but I’m going to write to my MP today. Tomorrow I’ll think of something else I can do. And something else every day

@Greedybilly its upto big tech / industries to fix it, otherwise why build wind turbines with tons of oil ?

What does worrying actually achieve? I’m enjoying it although Thursday was tough to concentrate on work. Driving through the electrical storm was spectacular but it did occur to me that maybe it was the start of the end of the world and there was my going “oooooh that’s pretty”.

I recycle and do what I can but quite honestly, while billionaires are taking multiple flights and cruises are popular, I don’t think my actions will change the direction so I’ll just come along for the ride. It’s out of my control.

It is worrying. The weather itself is very oppressive, heavy, pressing etc. I just mirror it emotionally. Another one who will get a portable unit for next year. I can’t install it properly as all my walls are plasterboard, so I’m genuinely contemplating moving house.

There was an expert on Sky News earlier who said that the UK will see temperatures of 40 degrees within 30 years. My young DS was sitting watching it with me and I asked him how he felt hearing that, he replied that there wasn’t anything we can really do when the powerful countries like China, India and the US continue to cause such damage. My heart broke for DS, I feel so scared for my children’s future.

I love hot weather and im usually 🙄 at people who , when complaining about unseasonably cold, miserable weather, say "its better than a heatwave"....and i usually think there is a range of quite acceptable weather conditions between cool, windy, wet, dull and 30° +.

But this year there hasn't really been. The beginning of this month was anout 12-15°.....and weve barely had anything between that and 30+
Today felt bearable because there was a breeze (and its "only" 30)

And no its not "just summer", these are record temperatures, on multiple days, for June...so not something that happens regularly. (So far)

I didn't find @mydogisthebest smug at all. I just thought it really interesting that she had so much foresight 40 years ago. Even 23 years ago I knew what was going to happen but it seemed so far off in the future.

I don't think you make a good point at all. Firstly, I imagine that mydogisthebest just thinks she'd take her chances, and secondly, I certainly didn't have children to help other people as they age. I had children because my hormones over-ruled logic and I thought it was a good idea. Just like everyone else. I of course love my children, so I don't want them to suffer.

We all know the basic facts about climate change so I'm not sure why being a climate scientist is relevant. They have the same biological imperative to have children as the rest of us.

Yes a bit, seeing the continent get fried on the news forecasts is like one of those fake news stories from the future you'd see as a kid on tomorrow's world or something.

I've told my teens they need to get used to this as it's their future.

I feel weirdly 'safer' because we're on an island surrounded by water so there's always the sea to jump in 😂

We are in a bit of a safer band, here and islands on this latitude north and south.

@TeenLifeMum- haha. Yes I hear you - we spend bloody hours trying to put together a no flight holiday when the royals/rest of the world are flying every 10 seconds seems a bit futile.
