Does anyone else feel anxious and depressed about this weird heat and climate change?

Greedybilly · Today 16:16

This week I've felt a horrible sense of foreboding and sadness. It's felt more like Thailand than Yorkshire and it's just not right.
People are clamouring for air conditioning but fighting fossil fuels with fossil fuels ( i.e climate change with things that run off leccy) can't be right can it? The dying wildlife snd wild fires are awful. Even a box of salted caramel Lidl cones can't lift this awful feeling of doom
How do others feel?

@hattie43call it global warming or call it heatwaves but it's the same thing isn't it?
I'm sorry about ur dogs BTW
My cats have had a rough week

@Clafoutie i hear you but what does help?

The research shows the one thing that helps the emotional side is becoming active in some way - you could campaign for action, policy change, mitigation.
Also I have found it helpful to adjust my own behaviour so I can look my kids in the eye and say I took steps to adapt what I did.

No . I just don’t like extreme heat for the sake of my dogs but we’ve had plenty of heatwaves before .

Heatwaves are more intense and more frequent due to climate change.

Agreed, if I knew what I knew now I wouldn't have done. Not just the climate crisis but the unemployment crisis. I do wonder what's in store for our youngsters.

Yep. Mine are teenagers and when I look back to when they were babies and toddlers, it seems like a different world. We’ve been hammered by so much over the past 10 years or so. I have so little to give them. I regret everything. I am a reasonably intelligent hardworking person who thought that if I worked hard for them and did my best they would be ok. Now I don’t know who will be ok. I feel sick at what I’ve done.

Whorulestheroost1 · Today 17:54

Anxious and depressed? No, not at all there are many worst things in life that take my attention than a few days year of hot weather.

Greedybilly · Today 17:54

@Sunshineandrainbow- well yes exactly- and we're not capturing/using this heat and we'll all be putting our heating on in 3 months ( more fossil fuels) and making it worse for next summer.

It isn't going to change whilst ecosystems are being destroyed. And planting a tree doesn't cut it anymore.

The UK had a drought last year and no water. So lets build a million new homes. We don't have the water to supply the infrastructure now

Let build AI centres. HS2, Extend A1, Lets build Universal studios in Bedfordshire and concrete over 400 acres or so. And this is just Britain. Get my drift?

exactly - we could be doing so much more to adapt. And there are small things that councils do - eg Plymouth and Sheffield cutting down all those trees and Torbay Council demolishing a building that was wanted as a visitor centre for the ex-Brixham railway. It's always better to adapt than rebuild.

Why are we building new houses on green field sites? Why are we not bringing old houses back into use? Why are we investing in roads rather than railways (some money is going into cycling which is good). Why are we not carrying out a massive programme of retrofitting homes with solar panels, heat pumps, grey water systems and building new reservoirs?

Instead we waste money on "improvements" to motorway junctions and build massive new housing estates (of poor quality housing not designed for climate adaptation).

It's really not that hard. It is expensive, but governments seem to find plenty of money for other things.

Greedybilly · Today 17:56

@Whorulestheroost1- worse things than global warming??? Like what??

OP posts:
Greedybilly · Today 17:57

@igelkott2026I agree with every word - why is there no sense of urgency??

Very worried and terrified for my children’s future.
It's only going to get worse, seems to be progressing so fast 😔

Meadowfinch · Today 18:00

I've coped OK. Plenty of water always in the car, salads and sorbets for food. Cutting out carbs causes my body to generate less heat.

Moving slowly, adapting to the coolest part of the day, doing house work at 5am in crop top and briefs. Dressing appropriately- linen or cotton dresses and sandals for work.

I've got the cycle of closing curtains and opening windows sorted too.

No, I don't feel sad. A bit warm maybe but I live in the countryside and we aren't in drought. Everywhere is green and verdant. Rain due tonight. Back to normal by Monday.

My ds is 17, off to uni in September to read energy engineering. He wants to build hydrogen cells and tidal arrays. I have to trust his generation. My job is to support him in getting there.

To be honest, anyone who hasn’t thought about this and been sad, angry and afraid about it well before now hasn’t been listening on the subject, or hasn’t been willing to believe it until it started affecting the UK. Climate change has been evident for decades, but horrific flooding in Bangladesh etc doesn’t seem to have been taken as a warning. It’s only when the Home Counties are affected that suddenly everyone sits up. And now it’s too late to do very much about it.

The news is largely controlled by those with an interest in preserving existing powers structures.
I'm in your camp @Greedybilly

Specialneedsnightmare · Today 18:02

Me too op. I love the sun and am definitely a summer person, but I feel the same as you this year.

You aren’t glued to MN? You’re posted 527 times.

It’s not like I didn’t know, or did nothing. But. The feeling in the body is a nightmare. I wasn’t casual about sustainability and the climate crisis before. But 15 years ago I thought we could work together and slow it down.
brexit, trump and associated rightwing bollocks have absolutely knackered our collective agency for the things that matter. Paralysed and poisoned state and global political functioning. Now we have fecking AI.

it’s not like we didn’t know. But we’ve had to endure all this stuff to do with farage and “immigrants” and trump- generated wars and Iran and Ukraine and Gaza and no one has been able to do anything about it

Greedybilly · Today 18:10

@Sherararara- creepy! Are u stalking me?!
And no I'm not and I hate it when people say ' another cat/dog/whatever thread.....it boils my piss tbh. Just scroll on....

Why can't you just scroll by? There are loads of boring (to me) threads. I just ignore them.
