Does anyone else feel anxious and depressed about this weird heat and climate change?

This week I've felt a horrible sense of foreboding and sadness. It's felt more like Thailand than Yorkshire and it's just not right.
People are clamouring for air conditioning but fighting fossil fuels with fossil fuels ( i.e climate change with things that run off leccy) can't be right can it? The dying wildlife snd wild fires are awful. Even a box of salted caramel Lidl cones can't lift this awful feeling of doom
How do others feel?

My point is, I've been here before, but minus permanent hot flushes. I actually slept outside on Wednesday.

Greedybilly · 27/06/2026 22:07

@igelkott2026- I despair of people :(

It's happened before; it'll happen again.

Well of course. That’s the exact whole point.

Current data suggests temperatures could reach 45C by 2056. The Met Office scenario indicates that temperatures could peak at:

  • 45°C in England
  • 41°C in Wales
  • 38°C in Scotland
  • 30°C in Northern Ireland

@PenelopeJoanSterling- it really is up to them but they won't unless there's financial implications involved sadly.

well at somepoint humanity will reach the stars, so we could always make earth 2.0

How exactly do you enjoy it? When you have to continue life, looks after and keep kids safe in it. Still carrying on with life while the country you live in is not equipt for these temperatures
many are not able to simply cope with it they struggle and don’t want to just enjoy it.

Well whining about it doesn't help. Maybe it's time the country you live in started planning to adapt to hotter temps in future years - it seems to be taking a long time for you to start however. Other countries have been more proactive.

Thursday night in south west was awful was pasing around till 3am . I'm very Claustrophobic and my stomachs been very upset like too much cold stuff not wanting to eat . Still very mild tried cleaning up today was just sweating

canuckup · 27/06/2026 22:29

Yes. Yes, it is worrying.

It's been mentioned a lot in the last twenty years, but it takes actual temperatures like that in the UK for people to believe it.

Additup · 27/06/2026 22:36

I've not been enjoying the 37 degree heat but I don't feel a sense of doom and foreboding. I'm just glad I don't live in a country where it's that hot for months on end.

HotGrapefruit · 27/06/2026 22:38

Oh definitely. It was like something from a dystopian novel. But it’s here, now.

I feel awful for my adult kids. I hope they won’t have children. The future is utterly bleak. Starvation and mass migration. I have no hope.

there is hope, eg earth 2.0

There’s another one? Or are you thinking that after everything decays into total entropy there’ll be another Big Bang. If so, you have remarkable patience

WolfinSheepsDress · 27/06/2026 23:19

My issue op is that I am struggling to solve the heat issue. For the cold I can buy thick curtains ,electrics blankets ,hot water bottles and so on.
For the heat I would struggle to cool us down. We have done the sheets thing but after a few days when the nights don't cool down and the house holds accumulative heat i can't combat the heat. Right now even though it's cool outside our house is hot.
Our cars are old so I don't feel 100% sure I will get back in them!
I can't keep the sun off us!
My DC have really struggled.
We have fans and done sheets I'm looking into Aircon but I would be hard with the configuration of the house

WolfinSheepsDress · 27/06/2026 23:20

I will make sure my DC buy houses with heat proof amenities like air con

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 27/06/2026 23:23

Yes it is worrying, the heat last week was not normal and is a stark reminder that we have very narrow margins in terms of what temperature we can cope with.

Air con isn’t heat proof and apart from the appalling environmental cost it’s expensive to run.

look for:
External shutters
A ground source/air source heat pump
Solar batteries.
Up-to-date insulation that keeps out the heat in summer as well as keeping it in, in winter
Passivhaus design

This. It’s very worrying

beeble347 · 27/06/2026 23:34

Hi OP please check out the People's Emergency Briefing and you may like to consider joining a local climate action group. Parents for the Future maybe? There's branches all over the UK. Plenty of us are very concerned. It is the new normal, it should shape everything from how we adapt our homes to who we vote for.

As it stands right now, I have very little interest in travelling abroad - don't think I want to do it if it involves taking a plane. We're saving up for solar panels and looking at a heat pump. There's ways to cool your house without using AC - think houses in the south of the US, ceiling fans, verandahs, shutters, it's what we'll have to adapt to.

People are rightly fed up and worried. I'm hoping some positive momentum will come out of all the suffering that's been caused with the war with Iran, jet fuel crisis, this heatwave and thunderstorms grounding planes. I think people are pushing for change.

Also email your local councillors as well as your MP, they have to log every concern raised to them so I was advised set a weekly reminder and keep emailing about different issues even if they're quite similar as the data will be looked at. The councillor who suggested it told me rhe parties atm don't know what they stand for so they're more likely to pay attention to what the public is saying they care about

Greedybilly · 28/06/2026 10:26

@beeble347- thanks will start with that film. Needed a bit of positivity so thanku.xxx

this is usa focused but is useful context for anyone struggling with “but what can I do”

https://www.effectivealtruism.org/articles/johannes-ackva-an-update-to-our-thinking-on-climate-change

the key thing is to look at where your actions can be aggregated with those of others to make most difference

my takeaway is there are three things:

donations
lobbying our political representatives
personal consumer choices

the first two are the most powerful in practical terms. The last is a matter of personal conscience, consistency and self respect; no one is perfect tho

The more people who do make themselves known as concerned and prepared to change the greater the pressure and the greater the change

I also find it hard to be positive but seeing others care and prepared to alter their behaviour does help

dont beat yourself up if you can’t give up meat or can’t give up your car: individual actions like that won’t get us there anyway. Look big picture at what you can contribute to and talk to others

Its brought on panic in me as i just cant escape the intense heat - it like i am cooking

ive been really grumpy due to lack of sleep which also triggers panic

the fact that this is our new normal snd the only only solution is expensive planet destroying air con is the only solution is terrifying

backformoreofthesame · 28/06/2026 11:28

The only solution isn’t planet destroying air con although air con will play a role as like as not.

first we need to make sure this doesn’t get worse

this is what 1.5 degrees heating does - we can’t afford to get to 4 degrees. We need to act.

presuure groups, political pressure , financial pressure -
name shame and stop using products from the worst companies - especially when it’s not even essential (turn off the ai)

eat less meat and diary, fly less. If you do get air con, do it after adding window shades and don’t overcool. Avoid using electricity at peak times. Do your laundry overnight.

look at your spending habits / imagine every £1 spent leads to carbon being emitted / the fabrication of good, transport to the warehouse etc etc . So much of what we buy is unnecessary - latest fashion, make up , party bags, out of season fruit. Vinted isn’t reducing the carbon footprint associated with clothing in this county , it’s enabling a constant shiny new things gratification culture. We are trapped in a society that encourages and relies on carbon producing activities and that needs to change

PrincessofWills · 28/06/2026 12:48

As long as mumsnetters and others do 14 lots of washing a week, use tumble dryers, and continually buy clothing nothing will improve. It's awful.
