How do you cope with housework when it's hot?

I have a chronic pain disorder and also a condition that causes overheating and the inability to regulate my temperature. I suffer hugely during this weather.
Atm it's hard enough to do the basics - laundry, cooking etc - whilst melting/trying to stay cool and just the thought of hoovering etc and proper cleaning is horrible! How do you cope?

I do it early morning and/or evening when it’s cooler.

whippersnapper55 · 22/06/2026 09:49

It's just a few days - do the bare minimum! If you can get up early and get things done or leave it to the evening when it's cooler, do that. My gran grew up in India and even after she moved to the UK, her habit was to get up at 5, do her housework and be done by 9. She'd always have an afternoon nap too. It's what people do in hot countries!

SJM1988 · 22/06/2026 09:54

I don't do big cleaning when its this hot. Just a wipe over and tidy to get through.

My friend is a cleaner and even she has rescheduled most of her cleans for this week. Anything above about 28-29 degrees is awful to clean in she says.

Lower your standards, do the minimum needed.
get easy things in for dinner etc.
what is necessary to do, I do either really early and then have a cold shower, or last thing before bed.

One thing at a time, and ideally before 8am at the moment.

Cooking salmon and chicken tonight, so we can eat cold alongside eggs and tuna later in the week, to avoid cooking. DH wants coucous tonight, so making a large batch, which we'll eat alongside salad rest of week.

TurboGirl2 · 22/06/2026 11:07

Do anything that is essential first thing then rest will just have to wait.

BunnyLake · 22/06/2026 11:08

I do it in very short spurts. A couple of minutes here and there through the day. It’s only me though so I can take as long as I like.

rolloverbeethoven · 22/06/2026 11:14

Nice to see how sensible the replies are. Look after yourself OP, and if the dust bothers you leave your specs off!

latetothefisting · 22/06/2026 11:17

agree with 'don't' as much as possible and do the basics when it's cooler. I put the hoover over at midnight last night (I wouldn't do that if I had neighbours but the house nextdoor is empty atm). Nobody will die if the house isn't hoovered for a few days.

If you feel really guilty about doing nothing (not that you should) do some of the 'leftover' jobs e.g. sorting out insurance, tidying kitchen drawer or mending while watching tv with feet in a bucket of cold water!

I’m really lucky in that we can choose the North facing bedroom to sleep in during hot weather, then revert to the South facing during cooler weather. I keep all the windows and curtains closed during the heat, just like they do in warmer countries. As for the housework, not a chance, I do the bare minimum, essential only, same with the garden. Thankfully there’s only the two of us and I’m lucky that I have a very tidy husband and no kids at home 😝

EveryDayisFriday · 22/06/2026 11:46

I do little jobs in the evening and morning when its cooler, clean kitchen in the evening and prep the washer and dishwasher to work overnight. Empty in the morning, clean the bathroom after my morning shower. I throw a duster around once a week as dust builds up more with all the windows open.

I like to steal pockets of time to micro tidy/clean like a quick put away or wipe down whilst food is cooking or kettle is boiling etc.

Elbowpatch · 22/06/2026 11:49

I don’t have any debilitating disorders and my house stays cool inside.

That reminds me, I have the cooker to clean.

Sunnybeachday · 22/06/2026 12:12

I get up super early to do the essentials, but I do the bare minimum in the hot weather

AbsoluteHoot · 22/06/2026 12:26

If I was struggling, I’d just not do any housework. Especially not if it affects your health. Thankfully our house is ancient and has really thick walls, so it’s lovely and cool.

BlackeyedSusan · 22/06/2026 12:28

As little as possible. Wash up when it is cool. Washing taken to ex's which is cooler. Makes it humid here though.

Sesma · 22/06/2026 12:29

I just wouldn't do it and leave it until the weekend.

Fortunately the heat doesn't bother me that much and I plan on washing my carpets tomorrow as the heat should dry them hopefully

And to add, my flat gets really hot so don't do anything that makes it hotter like hoover. Will clean if it is cool enough to move but anything hotter than 28 degrees c is too hot to move about in much. Was washing up overnight.

JenniferBooth · 22/06/2026 12:32

I down tools. I dont do it If the HA doesnt like it they can put air con in

Are the men worrying about this?

OutOfApricots · 22/06/2026 13:01

If ever there was an excuse to leave housework undone, this is it.

Meadowfinch · 22/06/2026 13:05

Do it in short bursts, move slowly and keep it to a minimum.

I cut the lawn yesterday afternoon, in five sessions. Had a break and a drink of water between each.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/06/2026 13:07

I do the absolute minimum, which may well be none at all.
Often the case here anyway, regardless of weather. 🙂

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/06/2026 13:08

I leam how.much houzewotk do.you need.to do in four days anyway?

Wash up dirty pots and plates, give the kitchen worktop and hob a quick wipe, give the bathroom and kitchen floor a very quick once over with the mop, spray some shower spray around the bath/shower, hang up towels, make the bed and put dirty clothes in the laundry basket.

That is pretty much the only housework I do each day between big weekend cleans anyway. And you coukd probably cut that back for a few days. The key thing for me would be cleaning plates and surfaces as you don't want food spills hanging around in the heat.

Thindog · 22/06/2026 13:10

Empty bins, wipe kitchen tops and loo. Leave everything else.

ainsleysanob · 22/06/2026 13:17

I just don’t do it!

Fiftyandme · 22/06/2026 13:17

I don’t do it.
