How do you cope with housework when it's hot?

Bbq1 · 21/06/2026 22:02

I have a chronic pain disorder and also a condition that causes overheating and the inability to regulate my temperature. I suffer hugely during this weather.
Atm it's hard enough to do the basics - laundry, cooking etc - whilst melting/trying to stay cool and just the thought of hoovering etc and proper cleaning is horrible! How do you cope?

Hi, I have ME/CFS and the heat makes it so much worse. Ive just done as many jobs as i can as i know i will be useless in the day tomorrow.

I just try and get as much as i can done early and late and just leave things during the day.

Feelblue · 21/06/2026 22:08

I just haven’t - needed to clean the kitchen floor and put out recycling but just too hot

inthesamesadboat · 21/06/2026 22:08

Don’t do it. I can’t think of anything that needs to be done in the 4 super hot incoming days other than feeding the family and that can be cold things or absolutely minimal engagement with the hob etc.

inthesamesadboat · 21/06/2026 22:09

Your house will survive for a week without hoovering!!

I'm a teacher and dreading how hot the classroom will be and the hordes of sweaty children who won’t be able to concentrate.

Lamelie · 21/06/2026 22:12

Nothing is done until it’s cooler.
Literally. I came down at 6, opened up the back doors and front windows. Considered unloading the dishwasher and decided against. I’ve just now done a wash. I’ll hang it out before bed. And possibly do the dishwasher but if not, not. I’ve set up the iron but reckon there’s a 10% chance I’ll use it.
I have rheumatoid arthritis, particularly uncomfortable when I’m tired, the heat’s ok.

mondaytosunday · 21/06/2026 22:13

I don’t bother. Simples.
I did have my son visit last week and he did a bang up job doing a garden tidy and vacuumed the stairs (a tricky task), and then went on to vacuum everywhere else! Good lad. I will have to do something though as collecting DD from uni this coming weekend. Temps in the 30s predicted. Oof.

Superscared · 21/06/2026 22:58

I have a heart issue which gets much worse with heat. I just take it very easy and live in front of an air con. Other than meal prep, there is no housework that can’t wait a week.

blankcanvas3 · 21/06/2026 23:08

I don’t do it until the evening when it’s much cooler, and I say this as somebody who is generally hoovering twice a day and has a very clean house. If it’s too hot I just won’t do it at all - I can catch up on it all when it’s colder again

Bertiebiscuit · 21/06/2026 23:34

Health is much more important than cleaning, apart from obvious hygiene. If it can't be done first thing in the morning or at night in hot weather it doesn't get done

Forestwanderer · 21/06/2026 23:37

I have just commented about this on another post and have just seen this post on the heat, so sharing this here too.
I promise I am not affiliated with Amazon etc 😉 😆
This... has been absolutely brilliant for me. Got it in May and have used it on walks, travelling, cooking, housework and even fell asleep (on my back) wearing it last night and woke uo with it around my neck still.
It has been great for my peri menopause symptoms and also helps me to breathe so much better. I really don't know how I managed without it. It has been so worth the money. Lasts for around 5 hours too and has 4 settings. Produces a really decent, powerful blast of cold air on the fourth setting, but even the first setting is really helpful.

Basics

Cooking, clean up, laundry

And if you need to use the oven, do so in the morning. Eat easy foods.

keepswimming38 · 22/06/2026 03:46

By not doing it!

I was going to say: don't do it! Obviously eating and clean underwear is essential so you do need to cook, shop and do minimal laundry. But apart from that... Just leave it. It's going to be cooler next week. I'm visiting friends on my day off this week (in my air conditioned car, which is the coolest place to be) rather than doing housework which I usually do.

LindorDoubleChoc · 22/06/2026 04:00

I don't do any cleaning other than dishes and kitchen surfaces and the loo. Absolutely everything else can wait a few days. I use heatwaves as an excuse to close the curtains, sit in front of a fan and binge watch something gripping on TV (on non work days obvs!).

DoAWheelie · 22/06/2026 04:01

I'm disabled too, heat makes the pain worse and I have severely impaired temperature regulation. I cope by shifting my sleeping pattern so I'm sleeping through the worst of the heat and awake during the cooler hours. Then I do as little as I can get away with while still keeping me and the cats fed and clean.

I try and break down tasks into 2-3 min chunks and do one chunk at a time with a break between. I try to avoid getting overheated in the first place as that's easier than trying to cool down afterwards which can take hours.

@Bbq1 I'd follow your husband's lead tbf. Is he as concerned?

GentleSheep · 22/06/2026 08:22

Hit the pause button. I focus on keeping my plants watered and the house cool, and conserving energy because night time is the worst.

catslovehairties · 22/06/2026 08:25

Personally I just get on with it but I don’t cook anything unless it can be done in a microwave or the air fryer. We have animals so just leaving it for a week isn’t really an option.

My dh shares the load but is totally supportive of my struggles with the heat and encourages and enables me to do as little as practically possible!

Thanks for all the responses. It's good to know that a lot of other people are planning on leaving the housework until further notice! I do work 2 days (end of week) in a school as I'm a TA. Luckily and very unusually I am fortunate enough to be in an air conditioned classroom!

I do housework and dog walking and exercise first thing in the day.

Generally heat builds until around 7 or 8pm, so to me that is the hottest part of the day. Madness to do housework in the evening.

I do drawer sorting etc during the hot afternoons with the blinds closed and a fan on.

TheChosenTwo · 22/06/2026 09:30

Well your health takes priority so if you can’t feasibly manage it, don’t do it.
I love the heat and don’t have any health conditions that are affected by it, I feel really energised and have managed to get far more done than I do when it’s dreary, cold and bleak outside.
my house has never been more well organised!
We do have a cleaner once a week but that obviously doesn’t remove the need for daily cleaning, plus she’s been on holiday for 2 weeks (back on Friday) so I’ve done more than I usually would.
Share the load if you can, washing needs kept on top of but it’s not especially arduous throwing the clothes in and pressing a button to switch it on, just try and do it during the cooler times of the day.
And eat cold food that doesn’t require your oven!
