I saw a vid of MTG. In a committee meeting I think. And someone had a graph up. And it struck me, she could not read the graph. She did not understand it.

And no shame in that. Loads of people that can't read graphs. But thing is, in the past she would not have stood for congress. Self doubt, self censorship of sorts. Fear of shame. Lots of reasons.

But now she is empowered. Now not understanding things, even what are considered the basics, is not a barrier.

And now it is in the open, rather than being a shameful secret, maybe it will raise awareness and also standards. Or efforts anyway.

Then again, maybe not.

There is a problem of the perception of being ruled by an elite. Especially when "knowing stuff" is a proxy for privilege.

Remember the average MAGA or Reform acolyte is convinced the only reason they aren't millionaires is because black/asian/female/disabled/<insert free choice> people exist.

When you have had someone complain - with a straight face - that it was unfair someone was promoted "because they work hard"; you rather lose interest in championing the unfashionable.

I actually don't know how to answer you. I look at Scotland with an adult literacy rate of 73.3% and compare it with Barbados at 99.6%. Both have free schooling but one population takes pride in being educated; the other, not as much.

Apparently the requirement for political success, in both the USA and UK today, isn't intelligence or knowledge, but the willingness to say whatever your base wants to hear.
