Some people really are as thick as mince...

So far today I've seen 3 posts on 3 different local FB groups from people convinced that the reason they haven't received their polling cards for tomorrow's elections is some sort of deliberate conspiracy.

The real reason, however, is that there is no election happening in our area.

You'd think they'd a) have noticed the complete lack of electioneering/canvassing/posters in front gardens etc locally, b) have realised their polling cards hadn't arrived and done something about it before today if they were that invested in voting, or even c) spent 30 seconds checking online before spaffing such nonsense....

They clearly haven't even tried to find out who the local candidates are, because if they had they'd have found out there are no local candidates because there are no local elections here [doh]

There are definitely people who don't use the brains they were born with. They don't listen either.

Probably the people who believe voting in Reform local councillors will "stop the boats".

We don't have elections in our area, either. You'll never guess which thick as mince party has put a leaflet through our door....

AgnesMcDoo · 06/05/2026 15:51

In Scotland it’s usually SNP voters who spin the conspiracy theories so thick As mince is not limited to the right

I remember vox pops and posts the day after the referendum from people who'd voted Leave who were dumbfounded it had actually happened as they only voted that way as some kind of obscure protest vote, supremely confident that it wouldn't actually happen. As the implications began to hit them, they were very worried. Bit late for that!

My favourite was the lady from Sunderland, (home to the Nissan car factory), who was puzzled by the notion that if we left the EU Nissan might reconsider their investment plans. She was also surprised that the country having voted leave, that we did not leave the next day. You can't argue with stupid!

Allmarbleslost · 06/05/2026 16:02

I've seen several posts proclaiming that Farage will be PM come Thursday. Says everything about his supporters really.

Ifeeltheneedtheneedforcoffee · 06/05/2026 16:05

Seen a couple of posts of people who are confidently saying starmer will be out on Thursday. Despite us not even having elections this year and there was substantial coverage of last year's elections due to a change of party.
I do wonder if a basic check should be introduced before getting your ballot paper to see if people know what they are actually voting for

FlyingApple · 06/05/2026 16:25

Have we tried calling reform voters thick yet? Oh we tried that, now what?

Wolmando · 06/05/2026 16:29

Most that use Facebook are a bit on the thick side

Efacsen · 06/05/2026 16:32

We received an email and a letter to remind us that there are no local elections here until next year - maybe a bit of an overkill - should perhaps just put it on FB

YANBU

But someone will be along soon to say

a) this is not AIBU and therefore this post is redundant
b) you cant call people thick and therefore this thread is redundant.

The end.

@SlimShadyPines we have an election tomorrow and there are no posters anywhere and we’ve had only one leaflet. I looked up the candidates in the area and there is no statement from any of them, no indication of what they intend to do if elected and, for some of them, nothing to say that they even live locally.

I always vote, but I don’t know why I bother, if they can’t be bothered.

You vote because it is the duty of a good citizen to vote. It's a quote and probably from an old Greek man ! Keep voting.

Nah, on Thursday Fiona Bruce will still be in charge of everything.

MrsChristmasHasResigned · 06/05/2026 17:14

I really think you should be able to pass a short test of current affairs before you are allowed to vote. Like what the house of commons and lords do, or who the Chancellor is. Nothing too complicated, but showing people are at least somewhat aware.

ChocHotolate · 06/05/2026 17:17

In our area Royal Mail fucked up (just a few streets postal votes missing) and the election team had to hand deliver them

I heard that in the voices of Claudia and Tess as in 'Keep ... on .... dancing!' I am, admittedly, one G&T in after a long day of travelling.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/05/2026 17:20

Vote early and vote often, as nobody should really do, in practice.

AuContrairePubicHair · 06/05/2026 18:15

It's just a weird level of clueless, that you can be furious at not getting a ballot paper for an election that isn't happening 😂

I wonder if there's been some viral post about it that they've seen and leapt on without stopping to consider whether or not it's applicable to where we actually live.

Maybe they mean he'll be forced to resign if it goes very badly for Labour.
I do think the media is partly to blame for focusing on Starmer rather than council issues.

KeeleyJ · 06/05/2026 18:38

As someone involved with running polling stations in Scotland tomorrow, I'm pissed off at Money Saving Expert posting all over social media that Photo ID is required. It isn't required in Scotland or Wales, how many people will see that and decide not to bother voting tomorrow😡.

OnceUponATimed · 06/05/2026 18:39

Whysnothingsimple · 06/05/2026 13:53

Yep, it’s really boring and predictable isn’t it???

It sadly is, because we all knew it would be the case.
It's also worrying for those of us who don't want Reform in because these are lots of people who have rarely voted or engaged in politics before, and apathy towards labour and other mainstream parties is going to mean the extremes win.

BurntBroccoli · 06/05/2026 18:42

Yup! Several posts on the local FB groups complaining about lack of polling cards.

Others think they are voting in a General Election.

We really need education on this basic stuff.

kdoia · 06/05/2026 18:44

why is mince thick?

upinaballoon · 06/05/2026 18:51

kdoia · 06/05/2026 18:44

why is mince thick?

Because every pound has 6 tblsps of Bisto stirred into it.

Whysnothingsimple · 06/05/2026 13:53

Yep, it’s really boring and predictable isn’t it???

Unfortunately it is. You'd have thought people would bother to check out basic facts after the disaster that was Brexit, but no.🙄 Then again Putin and his puppet Farage depend on the permanently enraged, willfully ignorant vote. Mushroom people who like being fed shit and kept in the dark.

Be grateful @AuContrairePubicHair, that these people will not be voting tomorrow and let's hope they get a bit smarter before the next election.🙏
