So far today I've seen 3 posts on 3 different local FB groups from people convinced that the reason they haven't received their polling cards for tomorrow's elections is some sort of deliberate conspiracy.

The real reason, however, is that there is no election happening in our area.

You'd think they'd a) have noticed the complete lack of electioneering/canvassing/posters in front gardens etc locally, b) have realised their polling cards hadn't arrived and done something about it before today if they were that invested in voting, or even c) spent 30 seconds checking online before spaffing such nonsense....

They clearly haven't even tried to find out who the local candidates are, because if they had they'd have found out there are no local candidates because there are no local elections here [doh]

What in god’s name is a vox pops?!?! I am NOT googling that!

The voice of the people. Nothing sinister just interviewing people in the street kind of thing.

I'd have assumed that they were deliberately playing stupid in an attempt to avoid paying and be so irritating, confusing and time-wasting that the guard would brush it off and let them get away with it... but the fact that they had actually paid for one ticket rather suggests otherwise!

If their intention had been to deliberately under-pay, they'd have been better using the old trick of buying just one ticket, then both of them hide in the toilet when the guard is on their way, and push the single ticket under the door, with only one person speaking/making a sound. Only problem with that, though, is if another thief pretends to be the guard, asks for their ticket and then they both run off with it and hide in the opposite toilet to wait for the actual guard!!

No, they weren't. We had a builder once who told us that the VAT inspector had said that they had a special name for people like him who were chronically disorganised but they were pretty sure were not trying to fiddle their tax - 'honest muddlers'. Grin I would say this pair fell into that category. They were at least in their 60s.

We’re not supposed to call people stupid. It’s rude, it upsets them and it reinforces their opinions rather than changing them. None of that stops it being TRUE, though.

I don't know. It's subjective isn't it? Every time I read one of the threads on here about 'things you didn't know until recently', I'm amazed at some people's stupidity, but also find things I didn't know myself. Also having to bear in mind that knowledge isn't the same as intelligence of course.

I really think you should be able to pass a short test of current affairs before you are allowed to vote. Like what the house of commons and lords do, or who the Chancellor is. Nothing too complicated, but showing people are at least somewhat aware.

As Gilbert and Sullivan said of the House of Lords; "They did nothing in particular, but they did it very well."

Nope, I'm self employed in a non-skilled trade, to fit around being a parent carer for a disabled child, and have no education beyond the GCSEs I took in 1996.

Somehow I still know when I do and don't need to vote, and manage not to take the lack of a local election in my borough as evidence of a conspiracy against democracy (ours were held in May 2025 and there was something like a 34.7% turnout).

Maybe keep necessary comments to yourself? Costs nothing to be kind.

I will not #BeKind🙄 to the willfully ignorant people destroying the UK. I do not care about the hurty feelz of fuckwits so stupid that they vote for a lying, incompetent traitor.

Takes me back to the Brexit referendum and reports that on Facebook people were warning each other not to use the pencil in the voting booth as Leave votes would be rubbed out by the Returning Officer and staff. Could hardly have made it more obvious that people spouting this drivel had never bothered to vote before.

We’ve had that on our local Facebook this time round: remember to take your own pens everyone 🤣

I feel no compunction to be kind to people who vote for a party some of whose candidates would have my daughter, and possibly my grandchildren, deported for the colour of their skin.

ProudAmberTurtle · 08/05/2026 09:12

Another thread of "everyone who votes differently to me is stupid"

By people who only vote for parties that say that men can become women

It's more nuanced than that.

Except none of the people I referred to in the OP were in fact voting 😂 that was kind of the point!

The problem is, as you descend the IQ tree, you run the risk of breathing the heavier air of paranoia and persecution that dogs the dim.

This thread is really about people who make decisions based on false premises and then never reevaluate them in the light of changing data.

It's not that they are necessarily any less "intelligent" (whatever that means) than others. More of a case that they clearly don't use the intelligence they have.

Stupid is as stupid does.

For someone who thinks themselves cleverer than a significant proportion of the population, you come across as fairly obtuse.

In tropical countries pens don't keep very well, for example.

To be fair, that's probably not the uppermost reason for not using pens in British elections Grin

Absolutely! No tropical weather round these parts unfortunately. But you can sharpen a pencil in Basildon or the Bahamas!

MissyMooPoo2 · 08/05/2026 10:41

For someone who thinks themselves cleverer than a significant proportion of the population, you come across as fairly obtuse.

OP was reporting people moaning that there was a conspiracy to prevent them voting by not delivering their polling cards. There was no conspiracy because there was no election in their areas. Even if there had been, you don't need a polling card to vote. Please explain how falling for this ill-informed fearmongering nonsense is a sign of being intelligent. (This has nothing to do with how the moaners would have voted. There are thick people of every political persuasion.)

AuContrairePubicHair · 08/05/2026 16:09

I don't think myself "cleverer than a significant proportion of the population". I'm well aware there are many people much better educated and knowledgeable than I am on all sorts of subjects.

I do, however, think myself cleverer than the small proportion of the population who are too dense to realise why their polling cards haven't arrived and decide it must be a conspiracy to prevent them from voting when there isn't even an election taking place where they live.
