Some people really are as thick as mince...

So far today I've seen 3 posts on 3 different local FB groups from people convinced that the reason they haven't received their polling cards for tomorrow's elections is some sort of deliberate conspiracy.

The real reason, however, is that there is no election happening in our area.

You'd think they'd a) have noticed the complete lack of electioneering/canvassing/posters in front gardens etc locally, b) have realised their polling cards hadn't arrived and done something about it before today if they were that invested in voting, or even c) spent 30 seconds checking online before spaffing such nonsense....

They clearly haven't even tried to find out who the local candidates are, because if they had they'd have found out there are no local candidates because there are no local elections here [doh]

Seen a couple of posts of people who are confidently saying starmer will be out on Thursday. Despite us not even having elections this year and there was substantial coverage of last year's elections due to a change of party.
I do wonder if a basic check should be introduced before getting your ballot paper to see if people know what they are actually voting for

That one I can at least understand - the premise being that a disaster at the local elections for Labour would lead to backbench upset and potential for a vote of no confidence in him as party Leader / leadership challenge.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 06/05/2026 19:29

I’ll just throw in that if you have to buy thousands, or millions, of them - pencils are much cheaper.

SquashPenguin · 06/05/2026 19:33

Bit like how the day after the Brexit referendum, “what is the EU?” was topping Google searches. Some people are beyond help.

Ah
We have someone on ours that was convinced that covid was spread via the 5g network. Same person also told people to boycott the local Chinese cos it was their fault too.
Thicker than mince really

We have a saying In Ne Scotland don't know if it's wider
As thick as shit in a bottle.

SerendipityJane · 06/05/2026 19:37

There is some recent research in Evolutionary Psychology that suggests we need thick people as a species. If confirmed it would be rather galling.

We don't have elections in our area, either. You'll never guess which thick as mince party has put a leaflet through our door....

We are not having an election but we got a Restore Britain leaflet through the door. Was it them?

Our polling station uses chinagraphs ....

That’s not what they mean though! A large proportion of them genuinely think they are voting out Labour in Westminster and Nige will be PM on Friday morning.

HoppityBun · 06/05/2026 19:57

The direct answer to your question is:“ possibly.

But remember being as thick as mince isn’t a lifestyle choice it’s the way one is made. In the same way that you, OP can claim no credit for being so intelligent: it wasn’t that at birth you thought “I’m choose to be bright“ and the other person thought “I choose to be thick“.. Again, that is just the way you are, due to inheritance, biology, environment and upbringing.

Probably the people who believe voting in Reform local councillors will "stop the boats".

Morrissey...

Deliberate ignorance is though.

ruffler45 · 06/05/2026 20:16

Politicians like thick people as they believe what they say and can be easily lead.

LlynTegid · 06/05/2026 20:18

I think you are all being unfair on mince to compare it with many people.

Brownbananaspot · 06/05/2026 20:24

My local council has had to post on social media repeatedly to remind people there is no election here this week, which is as it should be. I've still read posts from people claiming their election has been 'stolen from them' as a neighbouring council not linked to ours has delayed their elections by a year to fit in with the local government reorganisation timescales. Apparently this is a massive breach of democratic rights. I seriously despair of some people in this country.

Realitybitesyerbum · 06/05/2026 20:25

I hate offensive posts like this. No, I'm not voting Reform - who I vote for is my business. However, I would have expected that people would have learned from Brexit that calling everyone who doesn't agree with you 'thick' doesn't really make your targets think they want to be just like you. I reckon you're a Reformer attempting reverse psychology.

I'd say those people with low awareness of elections are in the majority.Just because I follow it like football doesn't mean others do. They don't. I don't think it means they are thick - in fact they've communicated haven't they? Just out of the loop.

Wolmando · 06/05/2026 20:43

Turnout will probably be about 35%, that's how much people care

A lot are just using it as click bait to bash the current government.

If a person votes a certain way because someone on the internet calls them thick, then they are thick.

When they're communicating crazy shit like "we're being denied democracy" instead of asking "what's happening and why", they're thick.

Northermcharn · 06/05/2026 21:09

Well the average IQ in this country is 100. So half of the people you will come across have a below average IQ. Stats innit.

CluelessAboutBiology · 06/05/2026 21:16

Another reason pens aren’t provided in polling stations - if the ink is still wet when you fold the ballot paper, the wet ink will mark the ballot paper and it will get rejected at the Count for having too many marks.

At my polling station we even have an officially printed sign to let voters know they can use their own writing implement if they prefer not to use the pencils provided.

They are more likely bots.

As I said, it's starting to look like thick people are part of the human evolutionary journey.

If you think about it, from an evolutionary view, having some of the population being immune to the reason of others may just have been enough to pass the genes on to the next generation.
