First sign you're of a certain age...you always pay in cash and count out every last frickin' bit of change no matter how big the queue is behind you.

Just don't? Use a card please. I don't want to count out your 5p pieces.

Also - why do you need a receipt when you have bought 2 items worth £1.49?

OP posts:
PurplishGemstones · 19/04/2026 10:59

They might be buying items for someone else so need receipt. I have to keep receipts if I buy something for a person I care for with learning disability just in case we are audited

Same here. I have to account for every penny of my daughter's cash that I spend on her behalf. I mean, I could just pay for small items myself I suppose but over a month it adds up to a lot.

Although the OP is wrong on many levels, if she works in Aldi she may be under pressure to serve customers at a certain speed. (Unless that is a myth because our local Aldi have lovely staff who don't seem to race your shopping through the scanner.)

When I worked in retail it was more about how quickly you scanned the items. Although I never really understood why as it's not something we were ever given targets for or expected to improve on, it was just randomly monitored. Always seemed a bit of an odd one given the variables in supermarkets with people packing at different speeds, the cashier helping to pack, customers running back for things they've forgot, needing to replace broken eggs or whatever.

Beachwalker66 · 19/04/2026 11:20

I don’t understand. If your job is to stand there all day serving customers, what difference does it make?

Do you mean you have numeracy issues and struggle with counting and dealing with cash and correct change?

It isn’t clear how this affects you really.

Am evil but amusing one 😅 I miss half penny sweets lol

Because I'm standing behind a till all day taking their money? I would have thought that was sort of obvious. TBF I am a boomer myself.

No need for swearing dear@Gall10

You started the swearing with your “fricking”

Just say fucking if that’s what you want to say. Can’t bear people who want you to know they are angry but use some soundalike euphemism instead of letting rip.

Lavenderflower · 19/04/2026 11:23

I feel your pain - I hated working in retail.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 19/04/2026 11:26

So you want to be replaced by a self service till?

@CaptainMyCaptain You are welcome in my shop - I never said ANYWHERE that all boomers pay with cash. Lots of older people are definitely moving with the times ie paying by watch or phone.... or just a usual fiver or tenner - whatever.

What I am objecting to is the fastidious counting out of every last little penny.

So they pay for their £1.48 item with a £5 note. You give them £3.52p change. Tomorrow they pay for their £1.48 item with 2 of the £1 coins you gave them. You give them 52p change. After a while of this they have a purse full of change because YOU don’t want them counting out the change that YOU gave them! Where would you allow people to spend their small change?

Random321 · 19/04/2026 11:28

Who hired you?

You are so not suited to the job.

Manicmondayss · 19/04/2026 11:31

Please take note. Get a life. Not everything revolves around you and how busy and important you are.

I can remember getting a threepenny bit to spend at the sweet shop.

I once won a threepenny bit for coming 3rd in a race at primary school. My running career went badly downhill after that. 😄

Not for you to decide. Get on with your job OP.

Laurmolonlabe · 19/04/2026 11:37

Different ways of doing things are perfectly valid- what about all the Millenials and Gen Zer's who just stop dead right in front of me to look at their phone- you take note.

Stnam · 19/04/2026 11:38

It is your role to deal with people. If you struggle to tolerate people then you are in the wrong job. At least self check out machines don't discriminate. You are being paid to be there so what does it matter to you how long people take? What better thing do you have to do in that moment than count people's money?

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 19/04/2026 11:40

Every time I hear that self checkouts cost jobs, I will remember this thread

backslashruby · 19/04/2026 11:40

It's not just people paying cash who hold up the queue. There seems to be some sort of dance that people learn when it comes to paying with their phone. Get out phone. Stare at phone. Tap tap tap. Stare at phone again. Show phone to till operator. Stare at phone again. Tap tap bloody tap. I was in Morrisons recently and the customer had her More card on her phone. Only problem was, she couldn't find it. She was stood there just continually going through the phone looking for it. Eventually the till operator paused her transaction so that the rest of us had a chance of getting home before midnight. I was 2 customers behind her and she was still doing the stare tap stare tap dance as I was leaving.

My first pocket money way a threepenny bit. Lovely chunky wee coin.

If it had been 6d you'd have been the next Mary Peters.

Who knows. Just a visceral hatred of "Boomers" (sic) I'm guessing.
Or general misanthropy.

Are you a bit dim? How can someone pay you in cash without counting out 'every last penny'? Would you prefer they put a random amount on the counter in the vague hope it approximates to the cost of what they're buying?

Yes, and aren't they saving the OP the time and bother of counting it?

Umm I'm 63

Age 63 and you've not progressed beyond standing at a till?

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/04/2026 11:52

Muteduck · 19/04/2026 10:45

Its MN we are not allowed to say boomers or the word old.
Everyone is young.

News flash people get old.

What has this got to do with the OP? Newsflash people are different whatever their age.
