First sign you're of a certain age...you always pay in cash and count out every last frickin' bit of change no matter how big the queue is behind you.

Just don't? Use a card please. I don't want to count out your 5p pieces.

Also - why do you need a receipt when you have bought 2 items worth £1.49?

Umm I'm 63

You can still be an ageist arsehole.

Haha !! Yes - they do that as well.. drives me insane.

Needless to say I try to maintain a neutral expression

Who’s “they”, if you’re also a boomer?

So they pay for their £1.48 item with a £5 note. You give them £3.52p change. Tomorrow they pay for their £1.48 item with 2 of the £1 coins you gave them. You give them 52p change. After a while of this they have a purse full of change because YOU don’t want them counting out the change that YOU gave them! Where would you allow people to spend their small change?

I use self scan and tip all my lose change in. I never use manned tills unless its store without selfscans or scan and shop

MoonWoman69 · 19/04/2026 11:56

@herbalteabag
Oh God, I had this when I worked at Marks and Sparks!

Older well off looking couple handed a load of shopping vouchers over. They asked for the manager when I pointed out that they were clearly 2 years out of date, then the manager told them exactly the same thing!
Then all their anger and annoyance while having to use their gold credit card instead, was taken out on me, as obviously I should have just blindly accepted the vouchers in the first place! Absolute grifters!

Tillow4ever · 19/04/2026 11:56

Nanny0gg · 19/04/2026 10:19

Why? Surely 3 £1 coins is easier than sorting out smaller change.

And I'm sure you wait for your till to tell you what the change should be, anyway

I thought it was very kind of the op to basically reveal they have precisely zero math skills…. That’s what this boils down to, they struggle to work it out. The fact they are scoffing at someone giving the odd change with a fiver means they simply don’t understand how to work out what change to give. You know, basic maths that a primary school child should be able to work out.

I’m Gen X and I generally use my card to pay. I apologise if it’s low value as appreciate that costs the business more than if I were to use cash. But if I have cash on me, I reserve the right to use it. And of course you check your change there and then. When the cashier is clearly not confident in calculating the change, there’s a higher likelihood a mistake was made, and pretty much every shop says check your change at the till as mistakes cannot be rectified after - because people lie.

Oh and the receipt? I ask for a receipt as I’m often going into other shops that sell the same item and I don’t want to risk being accused of stealing it.

And it’s not like when I used to help in a relative’s shop - the till works it out so you don’t have to strain your brain too much.

oh go away with your revolting ageism.

it is tedious.

previouslyknownas · 19/04/2026 11:58

God your a miserable cow
are you unhappy about your wrinkles or your weight today

the only person I know that insist on card is my drug dealer - he will take cash but charges extra for it 😂

I pay cash every where I can and if it means annoying the person who job it is to take my cash then I consider it’s my good deed for the day

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/04/2026 11:59

mydogisthebest · 19/04/2026 10:49

Well I want a receipt because I can scan them and earn money.

I hate the people who use their phone to pay and it never seems to work first time and then they have to retry at least once more. On the bus they are always holding people up.

Who the hell uses their phone to pay - never heard of bank cards?

Mine always works first time. I have Google Wallet. I don't need to pay on the bus as I have a senior bus pass.

FettchYeSandbagges · 19/04/2026 12:01

I was served by a surly passive-aggressive cashier of about my age in a shop the other day, and she was having trouble disguising her contemptuous disdain for her customers.

So there must be more than one of them.😂

When I’m doing my stint at the local charity shop I love people who pay with correct money as it helps our change situation now the last bank has closed. I make time for every customer, some pay with their card/phone/watch and don’t want to engage, others want to talk, I might be the only person they have talked to all week, yet I can manage the queue too, there’s a knack to appearing to be generous with time yet not keeping people waiting unnecessarily.

FloralDeerPattern · 19/04/2026 12:04

This thread has cheered me up on a Sunday morning. It's no wonder grandparents of today don't have time to look after their grandchildren they are all too busy getting riled up, swearing and insulting people on the internet. I wish my mil would do it on mumsnet instead of Facebook where everyone can see her full profile.

I’m 30 and sometimes use cash :) I have a weird knack for finding it all over the place - floors, cash trays, shop shelves. I’ve found about £6 this month so far.

Can you go through my house for me please lol 😆

Better arguing on the internet than having to spend your retirement years running around looking after everyone else’s life choices

maddiemookins16mum · 19/04/2026 12:08

Nah, you’re exaggerating.

In your own house the most likely place for cash is in pockets of coats and jeans. I once bought a pair of jeans on Vinted for £10. There was a £10 note in the pocket 😂

Also check the washing machine filter and the bedside table of any males (women don’t seem to dump cash there but men do).

BillericayDickie · 19/04/2026 12:09

Crushingdandelions · 19/04/2026 10:08

Because I'm standing behind a till all day taking their money? I would have thought that was sort of obvious. TBF I am a boomer myself.

No need for swearing dear@Gall10

as a "boomer" I have not paid in cash for years.
why do mn hq allow such ageist crap.

StrictlyCoffee · 19/04/2026 12:10

That’s a bit judgmental, my mum and dad are nearly 80 and use card.

I confess that on the odd occasion I do pay with cash, I like to give the cashier the change as well (so if £10.30, given them a £20 note and 30p in change. Older cashiers are great with it and usually appreciate it. But the mental gymnastics that some of the younger cashiers have to go through (despite having the till to work it out) is kind of entertaining.
