It's time consuming to rejoin the EU on a custom basis only, approximately 15 years. However this government is doing excellent work regarding inroads to paving the path to doing that.

cardibach · 26/04/2026 11:12

placemats · 26/04/2026 10:59

Yes that's a salient point. This Government needs two Parliaments to reinstate the EU membership, which could be just Customs Union as a starter for 10.

No need for a referendum to join the EU on Custom Union, as this current Government has Sovereignty.

It dies - but if the EU knows the next lot would just pull out again (or even thinks they might) that’s a lot of work for nothing.

Aye, to be fair, some of my assumptions about the world I'd grow up into could not have been more wrong.

End of apartheid
Fall of Berlin wall (leading to)
Fall of USSR
Northern Ireland peace process
A black POTUS
A British Indian PM

However one view of that progress is was that it was at the expense of longer term equality and opportunity

I'm hoping that never in my lifetime will I see a Reform/Tory government. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Breaking from the BBC - is this an excuse to cancel el the visit? Would serve Trump right as the online consensus seems to be it was staged to support the ballroom plan…

I think King Charles has a little bit more backbone than all those scared Americans who wouldn't come to the UK post 9-11.

I agree.

There were also those from the United States who would not come to the UK when the IRA and INLA were planting bombs in England, such as at Hyde Park and Warrington. People in the United States whose fellow citizens were helping to fund the IRA.

I’m not suggesting anyone is scared. Just that it’s a bloody good excuse to cancel a visit that shouldn’t be happening. It would also be very funny.

Totally agree. I don't think Charles should be going at all. And to be able to blame the poor standard of US security as a reason for cancelling the trip would make Trump's latest attempt at changing the narrative/looking for sympathy, or whatever the purpose of this farce was supposed to be, would just make a cancellation of the trip even sweeter. I would laugh for a week 😂

The good old days when the terrorists were white. Thankfully I worked with people, there were a few exceptions, who didn't judge me by my Irish accent. It was a scary time.

It's almost as if Americans are full of shit, isn't it ?

But surely the US is infinitely safer than Sadiq Khans sharia law London ?

TemperanceWest · 26/04/2026 18:00

This is interesting Reform vote share declining. Labour recovering. Cons recovering too, but more slowly (eta actually Con vote share is the same, but seats slightly up).

Edited

You can't get 2 reform supporters to agree with each other for 5 minutes, so the idea that somehow 262 will be able to manage it is a fairy story.

Although I do like the idea of Reform shafting the minor Tory party in a coalition. It would be cosmic justice.

The only dodgy data in leaflets round here comes from the Greens. Mention of polls but no links or figures just - we can stop reform due to these polls, trust me bro. And then a ‘swing’ diagram with no scale or figures on it either. Deeply manipulative and crap.

The Lib Dems are also very good at doing it as well.
