Smoking appreciation thread for pipes, roll ups, holders and cigars

This is a smoking appreciation thread for traditional tobacco (please no vapes). Pipes, holders, roll ups and cigars.

Anyone still enjoy a good smoke?

Ooh I love a roll-up! I have 2-3 most days usually with a coffee. Golden Virginia and silver Rizlas for me. My deputy at work is also a GV girl; coffee, fag and putting the world to rights time is the high point of our mornings.

DH is a roll-up smoker too and partial to a cigar on special occasions. My grandad smoked a pipe and I still love the smell.

murasaki · 30/03/2026 14:20

Cutters choice and green rizlas for me.

Terriblytwee · 30/03/2026 14:43

I tried a cigarette at 16. It wasn’t for me. The taste, the burning etc. I am genuinely interested in exactly why it’s so lovely for some people though. I understand the ritual and routine part but I’d love to hear about why exactly people love it and which physical effects particularly.

Like I said earlier, this thread isn’t for you, go and be bewildered somewhere else, other people’s choices aren’t yours to police.

There are many things that I don’t understand why other people would chose to do, but I don’t stand in judgment of them or appoint myself in a position of superiority.

I’m am ex smoker, but look back with nostalgia, came here to discuss that - not expecting to receive judgement and criticism from someone who should have scrolled on. 👋

What do you mean thread isn’t for you ?

Who do you think.you are?

I have every right to express my view on smoking as you do.

murasaki · 30/03/2026 15:08

Well I don't prance on to threads about dogs saying how much I don't like them, it's a very odd thing for you to do.

Farewelltothatid · 30/03/2026 15:19

Hoardasurass · 30/03/2026 13:05

This thread is not promoting smoking.
You've come on this thread with a nasty attitude lecturing and moralising about the evils of smoking and 2nd hand smoke, there's just no need.
People are talking mostly about memories that are invoked by the smell of tobacco.
We all know how dangerous smoking is and what its doing to people's health but we have free will and people will do unhealthy things like smoking, drinking, drug use and/or poor diet and exercise so no need to lecture.
I have 1 question for you since vehicle exhaust fumes are more harmful than 2nd hand smoke should we ban all petrol/diesel vehicles or would that be to far for you

Well actually I wish that the public transport system was fit for purpose in this country so that people would get out of their cars more and that would be to everyones benefit.

Now that I can agree with.

Perhaps you haven't come across people who have developed cancer because of smoking, or who have had their legs amputated because of cardio- vascular disease caused by smoking. Or who have had a stroke because of their smoking. Or been on oxygen because of smoking induced emphysema. Or who have developed COPD. I have met various people all these things have happened to.

So I think speaking fondly or nostalgically about smoking is absolutely
just so totally of kilter with the reality of smoking.
.
And you obviously expect people to go on threads and just agree with the everyone else. But that is a really dangerous attitude to have.

It’s perfectly simple - this thread is clearly titled ‘Smoking appreciation thread for pipes, roll ups, holders and cigars’

You clearly don’t appreciate any of those things, so I’m not sure what your confusion is about?

Thats the second time you’ve asked me, who do I think I am - I think I’m as entitled to express my displeasure at your attitude as you are in trying to insert your unwelcome views in a place they aren’t asked for 😂

I don’t understand why anyone would go white water rafting. It is dangerous and participants can die, but it is their own choice to do so and I wouldn’t join a thread of people discussing what they enjoy about it to tell them they are wrong. It’s got nothing to do with me.

But for some reason you have felt the need to come on here and wave a finger at those who are here to discuss something they enjoy.

You are right. You do have every right to express your views on smoking, which are no more or less valid than anyone else’s, but go to a place where it has been invited and will be appreciated - I refer you back to the title of the thread…

and of bloody course we have all met, been related to or have crossed paths with someone who has:

‘developed cancer because of smoking, or who have had their legs amputated because of cardio- vascular disease caused by smoking. Or who have had a stroke because of their smoking. Or been on oxygen because of smoking induced emphysema. Or who have developed COPD. I have met various people all these things have happened to.’

But if we want talk about enjoying the smell of tobacco smoke in any of its various forms then we will! And you can clutch your pearls in a place where others agree with you.

Nourishinghandcream · 30/03/2026 12:26

Never been a smoker but just LOVE the smell of a cigar or a pipe.
Another gorgeous smell is the smell of a good old fashioned tobacconist. Add to that the gentle clink of the lid on a heavy, ceramic tobacco jar.

Yes, of course we all know that smoking is bad for you (which is precisely why I have never done it) but it does not take away the fact that some forms of tobacco smell lovely.😁

Agree with this! Cigarette and vape stench leaves me gagging 🤮 and I can't help but think smokers and vapers are really scuzzy people (sorry!). Likely because I was forced to inhale it for my entire childhood by a selfish stepparent and that's made me very anti-smoking.

Pipe tobacco hits different, sort of nostalgic and I don't object to it (unless it's in my house! 😅)

I most certainly don't expect people to agree with everyone else. But when something is clearly a thread for liking thing x, and I don't like it, I don't bustle in like the Victorian morality police to spoil everyone else's nice chats. I leave them to it.

This isn't a debate thread ,it's a thread for smokers to reminisce and enjoy. I fail to see how you don't get that.

HelpMeGetThrough · 30/03/2026 15:51

Can’t beat a cup of tea and a fag (roll up of course).

Well I quite frankly don't understand why anyone would want to enjoy thinking about something which has devastated the lives of so many and killed countless people.

The point is that there are STILL young people, especially young women actually, who are taking up smoking because they think it looks cool, glamorous, sexy etc.
The point is it is none of those things.

I don't know if you remember Ashtray Lil? The young woman who was really beautiful but when her new boyfriend kissed her he started gagging and coughing because she tasted like an ashtray full of dog ends. Well that's a reality if smoking. But posters on this thread making out smoking was great arent doing the next generation of smokers any favours.

And thats why it's important all this nonsense about how wonderful smoking was should be countered with the reality ,rather than the romantised version, of smoking.

murasaki · 30/03/2026 16:17

Couldn't give a shit, to be honest. Other people's smoking decisions are theirs, mine are mine.

My sister's friend was a teetotal vegan non smoker and still died of cancer. It doesn't discriminate. So in the meantime, I will enjoy my rollie, and you are clearly enjoying your self righteousness. We'd just rather you did it elsewhere. The smoking area is, after all, where the fun people hang out....

Lifestooshort71 · 30/03/2026 16:19

We could just ignore posts that are anti-smoking? Continuing to engage continues the derailment and I, for one, am enjoying reading about others' memories.

Waitingfordoggo · 30/03/2026 16:21

@Farewelltothatid My Dad died of melanoma and I can’t bear to see people sunbathing, especially when they’re already burnt. But they are allowed to, it’s not illegal. I am allowed to think they’re stupid/reckless (but I don’t have to tell them, unless I want to have an argument with a stranger). And I have to accept that others don’t really care that some bloke they never met died of skin cancer as a result of sunburn.

I am sorry for your loss though.

(I used to smoke but don’t now. I hate the smell and the fact that I set fire to so much money over a 25 year period).

Imanexcellentdrivercharliebabbit · 29/03/2026 23:47

Half the reason I enjoy meeting up with my sisters every 6 weeks is that when I do we all take a 2 bottles of wine each and 20 Marlboro lights
drink the lot smoke the lot
it’s fucking brilliant
we are in our 50s and the cheeky smokes are the best bit

Omg that’s amazing. I’d bloody love that and I’m 60s x

BelBridge · 30/03/2026 16:23

I’ve been wanting to buy some cigars for ages - can anyone recommend a good online site?

Good point. So, grandad's pipe. A nostalgic smell for me, always accompanied by the smell of the coal fire in his living room. And making toast on long forks in the fire (it was the 80s, not the 40s), much more exciting than our boring toaster at home. All the smells together were bliss and remind me of being small and sitting on the floor with my sisters ,burning our toast.

Blarn · 30/03/2026 16:25

I haven't smoked for years but loved it. I realised my 'social smoking' was becoming one on the way to work and a couple in the day and then on the way home. Dp as was then hated it so I quite while I was ahead. The smell of a freshly lit cigarette on a really hot summers day takes me right back to being 16 though.

I'm really sorry about your Dad.

I'm.not trying to stop people smoking if that's what they want to do.

But I feel a thread romanticising smoking and presenting it as something good is just so irresponsible. It reinforces people who already smoke and encourages others to take up the habit.

I just dont understand the point of starting this thread apart from presenting smoking as a positive and that is plain wrong.

aspidernamedfluffy · 30/03/2026 16:48

Smoking is a habit which affects the whole of society and people promoting it as something good is ridiculous and dangerous

The same as alcohol then.

Wow. So I'm scuzzy because I do something you don't like. That's a really shitty thing to say. The fact that you even said that on a thread full of smokers makes you look like the scuzzy one here🤷

Disturbia81 · 30/03/2026 16:56

All my family died from smoking, it’s mostly inevitable but let people enjoy what they enjoy. Despite the trauma of losing people I still love the smell of pipes, cigars. or normal cigs (but only if someone is smoking in a car with moving wind) Keep the preaching off the thread
