If you had an imaginary shop, what would you sell?

I saw a sign in a vacant shop premises as I drove past today. The shop was to let for £100 per week. It’s obviously very difficult times at the moment to be setting up any business. It did get me thinking though what would I sell if I had a little shop (purely in my imagination).I remember the old fashioned haberdashers shops and would love one of those. So what would you sell in your shop ?

Books and fancy chocolates. With a little hot chocolate cafe area.

CallingOnTheMegaphone · 27/03/2026 19:23

I have an imaginary wool shop. I can't even knit!

BlindGuyMcSqueezy · 27/03/2026 19:23

As a kid I fantasised about running a little seaside trinket shop while living in a caravan with a few cats and an old smelly dog 😄
I might see how that works out now I’m actually grown up.

AnnaQuayRules · 27/03/2026 19:24

Books.

When I was a teenager, 40 years ago, I used to say I wanted to set up a second hand bookshop with a cafe inside, and everyone said that was a ridiculous idea. Now there are loads of them around.

NigellaDelia · 27/03/2026 19:24

I would divide it into 4 areas ~

(1) Yarn & haberdashery

(2) Recipe books, old & new

(3) Beautiful stationery for journaling

(4) Chocolate cafe to include afternoon teas with a chocolate theme

A wedding dress/bookshop combo. I'm not sure how it would work though.

Specialagentblond · 27/03/2026 19:26

Flowers

There was a little wool shop next to the video rental place where I grew up. It was lovely and I used to love going in there and seeing all the different coloured wool for sale. It was very special and now I suddenly feel a bit sad 😭

I would like to join @IAxolotlQuestions in her books and chocolate business, but I will add in a fancy stationery corner.

Arlanymor · 27/03/2026 19:28

Books and stationery. Bliss. I would never turn a profit as I would likely buy it all myself...

OutTheWayOut · 27/03/2026 19:28

Curios

Buscobel · 27/03/2026 19:28

A craft shop, with posh yarn and cross stitch kits and accessories. There’d be a coffee shop in one area and we’d help people with their projects if needed.

Hobsonschoiceofhob · 27/03/2026 19:29

Handmade chocolates and a cafe with excellent cake and toasties including GF coeliac safe ones made in a different area. All chocolates would be GF.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 27/03/2026 19:30

Chocolate brownies

Only because i'm addicted to them

NutellaEllaElla · 27/03/2026 19:31

i took your title in a less realistic way and thought I would sell the love of good parents, healthy organs (ethically sourced) and calorie free Nutella.

BeaLola · 27/03/2026 19:32

Stationery
and jewellery with a proper cafe including lovely homemade cakes (homemade by other talented people of which I am not one )

and flowers

Foundress · 27/03/2026 19:32

These are lovely ideas. I remember wool shops @Ipsevenenabibas we had a lovely one that my late DM used like going to. All the wools in their little square cubby holes. Funnily enough @BlindGuyMcSqueezy the shop I saw is in a seaside place.

I would have a haberdashery, but also sell sweets, etc. My shop would be like Miss Muggins' shop in the Milly Molly Mandy stories.

Agamede · 27/03/2026 19:34

Harpsichords or Hungarian Vizslas which are my two current favourite things. Although I would have trouble letting one of either of these things go to a paying customer.

I can talk about harpsichords for a long time and really, really want one.

Failing that, a shop selling socks picturing harpsichords or Vizslas. Also other socks. A sock shop.

PauliesWalnuts · 27/03/2026 19:37

I would sell tables, chairs, desks, bookcases and other items specifically designed for corners, and I’d call it The Corner Shop.

(As you can tell I have thought hard about this for many years)

Bluehels · 27/03/2026 19:37

Christmas!

begonefoulclutter · 27/03/2026 19:39

Imaginary diamonds from the imaginary diamond mine in my garden.
😂

SirChenjins · 27/03/2026 19:40

I'd have a deli selling breads, cheeses, meats, chutneys etc with a patisserie counter and a section for lovely dog treats, fancy collars, coats, leads etc. ChenDog would wander about the shop and in my head he'd be fussed and cooed over, but in reality he'd bark at the customers and would have to be banished to the back of the shop.

PartialToACupOfMilo2020 · 27/03/2026 19:41

I would sell my homemade soaps. It's a hobby and I'd probably not enjoy the business side, but as a little flight of fancy...
