If you had an imaginary shop, what would you sell?

I saw a sign in a vacant shop premises as I drove past today. The shop was to let for £100 per week. It’s obviously very difficult times at the moment to be setting up any business. It did get me thinking though what would I sell if I had a little shop (purely in my imagination).I remember the old fashioned haberdashers shops and would love one of those. So what would you sell in your shop ?

I'm in my wife's art gallery tomorrow. We sell art, souvenirs, cards, prints, biscuits and fudge. We've had it nearly 2 years

@SirChenjins my dog would want to sit on all the customers knees so he would probably have to be banished as well! I think your shop would smell lovely @PartialToACupOfMilo2020 .

Bikes, bike stuff and running stuff. In a forest.

A cafe of thick soups and flapjacks etc, probably vegetarian & vegan.
Some books, also second hand books.
I’d be aiming at the hearty mountain biking, gravel biking, trail running outdoorist market rather than the slimline road demons.
I’d let local photographers, potters, screen printers etc to sell their work too.

Unlike the many shops like this I’ve known, it would make a profit and stay open. Sadly such shops rarely do, which is why it remains a fantasy shop.

Sweet shop, I’d love to make pick’n’mix bags with people choosing their sweets from the giant tubs behind me and weighing them in the scales.

FreddysFingers · 27/03/2026 19:46

Tarot cards, candles, and exotic teas 🥰

Books
Books for journalling
Fountain pens and ink
Ribbons

I would just cook lovely dinners all day and sell them for people to take home and reheat

NigellaDelia · 27/03/2026 19:54

I would love to own/run a board game cafe

Hopefully one of the customers would teach me a few tricks so that I can finally beat my DB at Carcassonne

Probably a yarn shop. I'm lucky to have two great ones within 5 minutes' walk from work though! I'm a knitter, crocheter and spinner.

I'd be very tempted to run a nice stationery shop though. There used to be a wonderful ond near me, but it closed down.

An ice cream shop. With all the flavours and toppings.

Oooh I’ll have a scoop of coconut and a scoop of coffee please.

DH and I have a craft shop fantasy together. I would run one side with papercrafts, beads, wool, fabric and other things like that. He would have the other side with Airfix type models, train sets and Warhammer etc. We would have to have a decent sized shop as we would also want a space where people could get together for different nights for model painting, card making, knitting and be able host workshops for different things too.

Randomchat · 27/03/2026 21:04

I'd have a shop full of curiosities and beautiful things. But all the things would only cost about £5 so customers could actually afford to buy them. And I'd make enough profit to stay in business. So never going to happen

Flowers

Me too. I could grow them and you could sell them ??

7catsisnotenough · 27/03/2026 21:07

Vintage clothes and other vintage items - furniture and accessories etc. It's an ongoing dream of mine...

Kingdomofsleep · 27/03/2026 21:08

There's a small shop near London Bridge that is divided into three sections, one part sells vapes, one part does phone repairs and phone accessories, the third part is a florist!

They are manned by two men and a woman and I guess they are a family who all wanted to sell different things.

gavelgirl · 27/03/2026 21:09

Antiques. Not big objects like furniture, just lots of wonderful decorative arts and jewellery. Knick knacks, but good quality stuff. And a cafe surrounded by quirky things. If anyone’s ever been to Salts Mill, like that but smaller and with cakes.

I know someone who owns a shop like this with his wife. It's very successful, they do on line too but have craft evenings etc.

NancyJoan · 27/03/2026 21:10

Just lovely clothes. Small to medium sized brands, mostly European. Really nice socks, mid price jewellery.

Dearg · 27/03/2026 21:12

Pet shop. Just so my customers would bring their happy dogs in to choose a treat 🥰🐾🐾

YelramBob · 27/03/2026 21:14

Just cheese. Every single type of cheese 🧀

I'd have a cheese shop on a corner, people would come for miles around just to buy the amazing cheese.

golddiamond · 27/03/2026 21:20

A beautiful independent gift shop. Independent sellers. Art. Craftspeople’s wares. Beautiful smellies. Brocante. And I’d wrap everything in brown paper and ribbons.

WhitegreeNcandle · 27/03/2026 21:29

I’d refurbish the closed down department store in our dying town. It would be an emporium full of goods you actually needed. Quality items of clothing, the sort of place you’d go to buy a funeral coat, a dress for a wedding, a good pair of knickers or a pair of nice trousers.

There would be a gift section of thoughtfully curated items displayed with grandeur and glamour.

Quality furniture you would buy that would last a life time.

The sales staff would remember you from when you bought your expensive sofa in your 20’s when you pop back for a recover in in your 40’s

It would have a gorgeous haberdashery with staff in hand who knew what they were talking about. There would be a repair section where you could get your expensive clothes maintained.

The staff would smile, care about the products, know where and how they were made. No such thing as automated tills.

All things made in Britain. Food in the cafe from British farms, carpets of British wool.

Clean toilets, bright and cheerful decor. Amazing Christmas decorations with wreath workshops and Christmas trees to rent.

Putitinanenvelope · 27/03/2026 21:38

Everything Christmas including Christmas flavoured icecream and sorbets oh and also pistachio ( cause it’s my favourite), nice stationery and lovely tote bags to take everything home in.
