I can't see any other threads about this somehow. The first trailer was released this evening for the new HBO Harry Potter series. I am buzzing with excitement! What do you think of it?

huge Harry Potter fan, saw the trailer, looks good however I can already tell you I won’t prefer it too the movies… I do however look forward to seeing what they do and don’t include from the books.

StacieBenson · 27/03/2026 00:06

I suspect that we'll start to see the benefits of a TV series more when it comes to the longer books. Order of the Phoenix in particular really suffers from being squashed into a single film.

Notonthestairs · 27/03/2026 08:07

The risk is that they don't remake all of the books. I don't doubt the first two series are locked in. But after that who knows.

I totally agree, I also think its going to change how the tensions between the Marauders and Snape are perceived.

Yes, also Snape being the most hated teacher will give racism vibes especially to those who have never read the books or the seen the movies.
They could of changed the race of any other character and it would of been fine, but Snape no.
I will give the first season a chance but it’s going to bug the hell out of me.

It looks amazing. Even in a two minute clip it’s obvious that the kids can act the socks off the original film cast kids.

lemoncurdcupcake · 27/03/2026 09:41

As I watched it, I caught myself smiling more and more. It’s sparked a kind of excitement I haven’t felt in a long time. I’m really looking forward to it, and to sharing it with my kids :D

I’m also glad it’s coming out toward the end of the year, as it gives me time to read PS with my younger one. We haven’t watched the films yet or anything. I enjoyed them at the time, but I honestly think this series has real potential. And that’s coming from someone who never thought the story could be done justice again after such an incredible original cast. Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman and Robbie Coltrane are a tough act to follow.

Be interesting to experience it now I'm the same age as the adult characters rather than the kids!

flagpolesitta · 27/03/2026 10:29

I think it would be great to watch it having only read the books and never seeing the films, although I doubt that will apply to anybody 😆

dh280125 · 27/03/2026 10:37

The best thing is they've kept the look of the films. But otherwise it looks weak. No one seems to me to have much charisma and the books needed serious editing so I fear for a 'faithful' adaptation. I'm not enthused.

As an adult I am struck at how wooden most of the child actors are in the original films, with the exception of Rupert Grint and Tom Felton.

HumphreyCobblers · 27/03/2026 11:22

I am looking forward to Ginny - they did such a number on her in the films. She is such a brilliant character in the books. Also hoping that Ron gets a better deal.

My favourite child casting in the films is Neville. He is perfect.

Yeah I think overall the adults in the films are beautifully cast - some really memorable acting and casting, e.g..Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman - but the child actors are overall poor and the character dynamics between the trio etc just aren't right. The Hermione Granger and the Prisoner of Azkaban film especially

flagpolesitta · 27/03/2026 11:54

I’m also a bit confused about the ‘seven series, one per book’ thing I’ve read. The latter books are five times longer than the first few.

They might be much longer series.

would apply to my kids!! I did wonder about watching the first film last year sometime but we're slowly reading the books and I thought it would affect how he imagines the characters so I avoided it. Then I saw the show coming out and I thought that actually that would probably be better for us in terms of their age etc and being ready to absorb it all so....this will be their first experience of it on screen!

StacieBenson · 27/03/2026 13:53

I did think that my children will connect more with the TV series rather than the films, as they will grow up alongside them. I do think the films aged very well though

TheGriffle · 27/03/2026 14:07

I thought the trailer looks really good. They seem to have managed to capture the magical feeling.

Nick Frost looks like a good Hagrid but I feel his voice isn’t gruff enough, I always find Nick quite softly spoken. Harry and Hermione look really good but I think Ron looks a bit too perfect, like a Disney character rather than a neglected Weasley if anyone knows what I mean. I’m also worried about the Snape casting due to how the past bullying by the Marauders and Harry’s suspicion of him will be changed with an unpleasant racial element. Like others have said, you could swap the race of any of the other teachers mostly and it would have no effect to the story but changing Snapes race could affect the feelings we’re supposed to have for him and his story arc.

So excited to see another take on the books after my kids making me watch the first three films in particular over and over again 😂. Harry looks really well cast from the trailer. I did love Rupert Grint as Ron and feel the new Ron has his work cut out living up to that, but hope he does!

Agreed, I think Rupert Grint will always be Ron in my head. I‘ll be happy if proved wrong though.

Newsenmum · 27/03/2026 12:23

They might be much longer series.

I'm hoping so because there's so much to squeeze in!

Lets hope they leave out Hermione's efforts to 'save' the house elves though.

Squidgemoon · 28/03/2026 09:48

I’m super excited for this, the trailer looks amazing! I like all the casting so far but agree that Jon Lithgow is too old to play Dumbledore for 7 seasons, so we’ll inevitably end up with a recast (but then that also happened in the films). It’s easy to age up a younger actor so I don’t know why they didn’t do that.

The children will also grow far too quickly and be playing mid teens when they are in their mid 20s, ala Stranger Things … they are so slow with making TV series these days, 2 years between seasons is too long.

HollanderCottage · 28/03/2026 10:09

It looks amazing - I cried!

GetOffTheCounter · 28/03/2026 10:29

We love JK and HP and yet were not going to watch it as felt the films did everything we wanted.

But now we are discussing scrapping our Disney subscription for HBO on the back of the trailers which look really excellent.

My DD was one of the probably 900 million girls to audition for Hermione so she's a bit annoyed! But all I've seen about this online so far is people critiquing the poor lads teeth, so I'd say that is a bullet dodged. No amount of money and opportunity will make up for the kind of scrutiny those kids are under.

I have been listening to the newly released full cast audio books on audible.

Def a sceptic when they came out but love them. They seem to have sorted the background noise in the earlier books etc.

Arabella Staunton (Hermione) plays Hermione in books 1-3 in the audible and then all of the Golden Trio are re-cast with older actors.
*just to say she is very good, as is the actress who takes over for her
Very sensible and I have to think the HBO will do the same as these kids won't age the same way the characters have.
I do remember when the films were coming out and there was talk of re-casting but it never happened.
Seems like if these are made more quickly they will have to,

KnottyKnitting · 28/03/2026 11:28

The kid who plays Malfoy is the same actor who played Jack in the recent BBC adaption of Lord of the flies ( Lox Pratt) . When we watched it a few weeks ago I said to DH- this kid would make a great Malfoy, looked it up and clearly the casting agents had thought the same!
