I can't see any other threads about this somehow. The first trailer was released this evening for the new HBO Harry Potter series. I am buzzing with excitement! What do you think of it?

I thought this looked so good! I was a fan of the books first, and there are many things in the films that just aren’t done as I wanted them to be! (Which I guess is like any film when you have your own version of how it should go in your own mind) This is a lovely opportunity to be more true to the books and flesh plots and characters more. My only concern is, we must be spending more time watching Harry at home with his family- which is going to be a tough watch. Our household are very excited for this.

Thank you for posting, DD10 and I watched this together very excitedly!!

StacieBenson · 25/03/2026 21:46

This looks amazing. I unexpectedly felt very emotional watching this. It was so jarring seeing Hagrid from afar but not hearing Robbie Coltrane's voice. This will be a real Christmas treat, although the pre-Hogwarts scenes do look quite tough to watch.

LaDoIceVita · 25/03/2026 21:51

It looks wonderful! I don't want to wait until Christmas - I want to watch it NOW!!

mum2jakie · 25/03/2026 21:54

Heard about this tonight from my 18 year old son, a big HP fan. We'll be getting access to HBO for free through Sky.

NewtScamandersNaughtyNiffler · 25/03/2026 21:56

Loved the trailer. The kids look much more like I'd always imagined them. The adult cast of the movies were all so good (albeit with some age issues) that it will be strange having new ones. Hagrid sounded too posh.

But I'm really looking forward to all the bits they missed out of the films. And then maybe all the idiots people who have seen the films and not read the books will stop mentioning plot holes that aren't.

SENcatsandfish · 25/03/2026 21:59

I was dubious that it would be good and im still a bit unsure, some of the casting im not keen on, actually quite a few im not keen on. But in general it looks better than I thought.

TheGirlWhoLived · 25/03/2026 22:21

Oh I have sky so assume HBO too!

topcat2026 · 25/03/2026 22:35

I see the trailer unveiling has been cleverly timed with the UK launch tomorrow of HBO Max.

Looks good and I’m glad the series has been brought forward a few months to Christmas.

UniversityofWarwick · 25/03/2026 22:47

It looks good. But all the time I watched it I kept thinking it just looked like a remake. Which I know it is, but it felt as if they were remaking the film rather than doing a film of the book.

Does anyone understand what I mean?

Snapespeare · 25/03/2026 22:49

Very excited for this, I love how twinkly and kind Nick Frost as Hagrid is. Hermione was an excellent Hermione on Audible full casts - kids are all cute as a button and performances all seem spot on.

Hogwartsian · 25/03/2026 22:59

Lovely to read all of your messages. I think Ron looks really cute. I really hope they give him more attention than the films did.

Ooh. Will definitely want to watch.

JulietteHasAGun · 25/03/2026 23:23

I am beyond excited. Looks great.

ThatKookyNavyGoose · 25/03/2026 23:28

The thing is, it all feels so familiar that you really notice the replacement of Fiona Shaw, Robbie Coltrane and Maggie Smith.

As Chris Columbus noted when he saw set photos of Nick Frost's Hagrid in identical costume to that used in the films, what's the point?

BelBridge · 25/03/2026 23:30

I cannot wait for this! I love the films but always felt that they didn’t capture the true essence of the books as they needed to appeal to children throughout. The books are actually really dark in places (as you were supposed to grow with the kids) and I can’t wait to see how they handle all the very difficult subject matter. And this HP certainly looks less wooden than Radcliffe!

The age issues in the films always bothered me: Harry’s parents were in their early twenties when they died - not middle aged! And as much as I love Alan Rickman he played Snape too old - Snape would have been in his early thirties when Harry started school. They aged so many characters up which took away from the sense of trauma they had all gone through in my opinion, as if it had all happened so long ago and been forgotten when in reality they had all dealt with so much death and destruction by their mid twenties and were still recovering a mere decade later.

Dexterrr · 25/03/2026 23:41

Wishing the year away until Christmas day! Looks amazing

Edited

I think because it’ll be a series not films. So much more screen time to represent the books better.

I know what you mean.

For me the biggest disappointment of the films was how much humour was left out. All the little funny bits of action and dialogue. This looks like it might be the same - its following the mood of the films not the books.

Justbreathagain · 26/03/2026 06:48

Yey !!!! I am currently listening to the all cast edition of the audio books and loving them so can't wait for this.!

I wasn’t looking forward to this, being a big fan of the films as well as the books, but it actually looked really interesting.

Same

RoseField1 · 26/03/2026 07:16

It looks amazing.
Adore the films but I can have an open mind to a new, long, 2026 technology version. I don't mind any of the casting but I do think it was a mistake to cast a man in his 80s for Dumbledore given it's going to be at least a decade of filming all the books! I hope he sticks it out but honestly it's a commitment most people that age wouldn't make!
