The dreaded middle-of-the-night accidental 'like'

Please tell me your tales of accidentally liking your ex's new girlfriend's best friend's 12 year old graduation photo on social media to make me feel better because I have done something similar last night 😭😆

Immediately went into witness protection by blocking and deactivating facebook, I am old enough to know better 😫

I once accidently shared a photo of my exes wife and kids and it automatically tagged the "feeling emotional 🥰" thing on it.

I'm no longer on social media at all.

Fuck me,that's a corker - u poor thing! 🤣🤣

EllaPaella · 16/03/2026 15:13

Just to reassure you OP this has happened to me in reverse- I saw an Ex’s new girlfriend like one if my photos, I happened to be on facebook at the time the notification flashed up but as soon as I went to look again it had gone so she must have realised and unliked straight away. So as long as your EX wasn’t actually on FB at that moment chances are the notification will disappear. Everyone knows that people stalk each other on FB so I wouldn’t be too mortified.
howling at the person tagging themself as the baby story - absolute corker! 😂

Pistachiocake · 16/03/2026 15:18

It's very simple. Time travel back, just over 20 years should do it, when it would have seemed very weird to do any of this stuff. And my younger self would expect I'd be doing something far more exciting than typing this right now.

Or-take your mind off it by worrying about what will seem normal in 20 years.

Years ago, this American guy (let’s call him Tom) contacted me on FB informing me we were related. He was researching his family tree and we exchanged a lot of info and photos. He had 5 handsome brothers and I found it quite fascinating trawling through their accounts seeing who they were married to and all the rest of it. I kept wondering what this pinging noise was - now I know it was me liking random pics…

Anyway, one day I went back to Tom’s account and discovered his wife had blocked me! Guess she’d gotten suspicious at this random Brithsh woman liking pics of her with her mum. I remain blocked to this day.

I’ve been invited to go over there and meet all the family - but the shame!

Mamarama2u2 · 16/03/2026 15:23

Horrendous one - An ex work colleagues ex partner had committed suicide, I’d gone onto his profile as he’d gone missing leading up to taking his life and had been tagged in lots of posts. Went onto his profile and accidentally shared his new relationship status (Facebook) AND to make it worse didn’t realise I had even done it for an hour! My soul left my body when I realised!

CherryogDog · 16/03/2026 17:35

I've often fallen asleep while scrolling Facebook, accidentally liking stuff.
But my worse one was falling asleep reading someone's sad post about their dog dying, and woke up to find I'd posted a laughing dog GIF.
Eight times.
FFS 😅

Absolutely brilliant response 👏

I had a friend request from an ex’s wife… instead of accepting it, I sent her a friendly message as it was a bit random/out of the blue.

Turns out, my ex had been stalking me, but on her FB account! And accidentally pressed ‘add friend!’

I bet that was an almighty row…!

Summerunlover · 16/03/2026 18:45

This is why you need two Facebook accounts. I have done this so many times. I now have a fake Facebook stalker account. Ruby Smith!

Davros · 16/03/2026 18:59

Am I missing something? You can “unlike” something on FB can’t you? Maybe I need to keep my wits about me if not

MummyDummyNow · 16/03/2026 19:01

I’m crying laughing at some of these! How do we get it into Classics?

I’m always terrified when doing a bit of Social Media stalking, I literally hold the phone like it’s an unexploded bomb!

My sister and I often pass our phones to each other to show someone's FB/insta... always with a warning "don't like anything"!

Dewbery · 16/03/2026 19:16

My husbands Ex did this to me a few times (they split up before we even met!). Twice on Facebook and once or twice she also viewed my LinkedIn page. Gave me a laugh at the time.

I’ve done it a few times too, to some people completely by accident as they are complete strangers, and twice to someone I was snooping on. I just unliked and blocked them and hoped they didn’t see 🤣. It’s easy to do though, I’ve sent a friend request to complete strangers by mistake, more than once

I once was snooping on workers fb profiles from my sons daycare (they were all hip and young and fabulous and I was enviously being nosy)...realised one of them was gay so had a lovely nose at her gfs profile.... Realised a few months later I had sent a friend request to the gf by accident .....that was left unresponded to ....but I cringe as maybe she asked the daycare worker I know did she know the random woman who'd added her.... I quietly deleted the request after I realised and retired from snooping 🙈

I’ll go have a look about in classics. It’s a brilliant thread. About embarrassing tech blunders.

The other story that made me laugh was the poster who had a crush on the new guy in the office. She found out his address and put it in to google maps. But pressed ‘start navigation’ and then google maps read out ‘starting navigation to ‘new man’s address’. If have left the job 😂.

When I first started reading this thread this story was the first thing I thought of! 🤣

If I remember correctly she managed to salvage it with some story as to why she put his address in!

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 16/03/2026 22:54

Accidentally sending a friend request when nosing at someone’s profile is even worse but thankfully if you realise and cancel the request, apparently they never know! God I really hope so 🤞

I’m friends with my ex’s lovely wife. We both follow each other. So it’s fine if I like something she posts. Def the way to go!
