Do all council tips now require advance booking for tip runs?

Does everyone have to do this now?
I'm trying to declutter and in the past would have just done tip runs as and when but now you have to book an appt in advance.
Tbh I'm not surprised fly tipping is a major issue in some parts of our county!

Mine in Brighton doesn't but the one in the next town does.

TheTattooedLady · 14/03/2026 22:12

Our doesn’t require an appointment, but they restrict access to people from the local area.

SleafordSods · 14/03/2026 22:13

No. I emptied a family member’s garage in November and didn’t need a booking. Didn’t even need to price I lived in tgat area, which was lucky because i don’t Smile

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 14/03/2026 22:13

For ours you need an appointment and proof of residency. Has been like this for several years.

HipHipWhoRay · 14/03/2026 22:14

Yeah, all ours do, but recently noticed I could get a slot a pretty short notice (same day, within a couple of
hours). The more annoying thing is the interview at the gate as to exactly what I’m dropping off. Mainly as brain fog means I can barely remember

TheDandyLion · 14/03/2026 22:14

Ours doesn't. We did a tip run this morning. They say they might check address id to make sure you're local to the area but the guard waved us straight through.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 14/03/2026 22:14

No appointments needed here, you do have to show proof of address but only the first time each year, then you get a sticker for the car for future visits

7238SM · 14/03/2026 22:15

My council does as does the neighbouring area- SE. FIL did a trip recently and because he has a blue badge, no booking needed!

ProudPearl · 14/03/2026 22:16

Ours does, since COVID. You have to prove residency.

ArcticSkua · 14/03/2026 22:16

Ours doesn't.

tutugogo · 14/03/2026 22:17

Ours does from Monday, annoying, though you can book 15 minutes ahead if there’s space and it’s a 10 minute drive

Youshouldbestrongerthanme · 14/03/2026 22:17

Thanks everyone. Also - it it me or does anyone else get totally fed up with the amount of crap accumulated in their house? Ours is mostly belonging to the 5 yo!!

Ours has done for the last 18 months or so. But I've had no problems at all getting a slot. I go online and have always managed to get a slot within the hour. More often then not, in 15 minutes (which is how long it takes to drive to the tip).

The local Facebook page was full of people moaning about it when it started, but in my experience it's no more difficult than it was before.

likelysuspect · 14/03/2026 22:18

Yes ours does, started and covid and of course never stopped

Total ball ache when you're trying to flit about and do multiple runs and put timescales on when you think this or that errand will finish and you'll end up at the dump. I also find it difficult to use a phone so booking while already out is very difficult and this is not inclusive or mindful about those with disabilities.

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 14/03/2026 22:18

Ours doesn’t. I love a tip run and ours is very well organised.

rightoguvnor · 14/03/2026 22:18

Ours does (although it’s closed for ‘refurbishment’ at the moment). I don’t mind it really - you can usually get a slot within a few hours if you need sn unelected visit, and if you book further ahead it gives me the motivation to get all the stuff together within deadline.

littlemisspickles · 14/03/2026 22:19

We do, and I prefer it. Often available on the same day, even the same hour and much less queueing

TheChosenTwo · 14/03/2026 22:19

Ours does but Dh says this has only been the case since covid. I’ve actually only visited twice in over 20 years so not something that massively affects me,

Wolmando · 14/03/2026 22:19

No appointments needed and go as often as you like

youalright · 14/03/2026 22:20

No ours only did this during covid now its back to normal

Sminty2 · 14/03/2026 22:20

Ours did, since Covid then last year, they stopped and it became a free for all. I preferred the booking option as you had a guaranteed time and it was much easier. Now it can be a long wait queuing for the slot.

SleafordSods · 14/03/2026 22:21

*prove I lived in that area

BeMellowAquaSquid · 14/03/2026 22:22

Ours do and depending on which person is on the gate they’re pretty much like GP receptionists very militant about it! I’ve had to reverse back out the gate before now laden with half a tree

Sandypebbles · 14/03/2026 22:25

I moved house last year and the council tip in this area has a booking system. I expected it to be a pain but I really like it. I book online on the council website and have never failed to get a slot in the next couple of hours. You enter the car reg and there’s a guy on the gate checking arrivals on a tablet. No booking no entry.

There’s never more than 2 cars ahead of me in the queue. It’s a really efficient system. In the weeks prior to moving I was at the tip for my old address most days without a booking system. Often stuck in a queue of 20 odd cars waiting to get in.

fabricstash · 14/03/2026 22:26

We have to book but like above I find it easier as almost no queue and less frantic. Previously I could be queuing for an hour
