Do all council tips now require advance booking for tip runs?

Does everyone have to do this now?
I'm trying to declutter and in the past would have just done tip runs as and when but now you have to book an appt in advance.
Tbh I'm not surprised fly tipping is a major issue in some parts of our county!

No. Some are rationed to you though. Post codes on certain days only - thst type of thing.

SpringsOnTheWay · 14/03/2026 22:29

No, just proof of residency.
I live in an area with a huge fly tipping issue, I would be really concerned it would increase with bookings.

Davros · 14/03/2026 22:30

No need to book here, London zone 2

Sandypebbles · 14/03/2026 22:34

There’s really no excuse for it leading to fly tipping. It’s straightforward and easy to book. Some people are just slovenly bastards. If they’ve got time and effort to fly tip they’ve got time to spend 5 mins logging on to the council website and booking a slot at the tip.

daffodilandtulip · 14/03/2026 22:34

We have to book, prove we live here and a lot of items you have to pay for as well.

MagnoliaTreeBlossom · 14/03/2026 22:39

My local one introduced an online booking system during covid and it's remained in place.

You can book up to 3 x 15 minute visits a day, up to 2 weeks in advance. Proof of residence in the local authority is required on arrival. They ask what you have so they can direct you to the correct container(s). There are more than 10 sections in mine for everything from tvs to rubble.

I usually book a week in advance and then can sort with that deadline in mind.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 14/03/2026 22:40

We have to book. But because we’re in Birmingham (bin strike) if we only have what would have been collected by the vans, we don’t need to book that. Anytime I go I’ve got other stuff too so I book. It’s actually much better, when it was a free for all you’d never know if it was busy or not, I’ve waited 45 mins to get in before they started this new system.

MaidOfSteel · 14/03/2026 22:46

We need an appointment in our county now. Much of the area is rural and I’m noticing an increase in fly-tipping since it started. I think fly-tippers are scum, tbh.

Councils should be making it easier for residents nowadays, not harder!

Mum8686 · 14/03/2026 22:53

We have a booking system. The tip is on the edge of the county and the neighbouring council refuse to pay towards costs. So their residents are not allowed to use it and have to travel a long way to theirs. Hence more fly tipping. You can only book one slot at a time but you can get same day ones if you want a few.

SmallTreeDeepRoots · 14/03/2026 22:54

We need to book, but it’s honestly no hassle and I can always get the next half hour slot. Since it take 20 mins to drive there, it’s not a problem. No address checking, no rummaging. Staff are very happy to help with heavy stuff and to direct you if you ask where something should go. They also have a fascinating little shop which is the real reason I go there!

Also quite rural, and I haven't noticed any difference. Fly tipping is almost always dodgy trade related, not ordinary domestic waste.

Given that we can go online and book an appointment straight away, there's no real barrier to access that would make anyone think they needed to fly tip.

SabrinaThwaite · 14/03/2026 22:55

For years we’ve had to prove that we live in the area, and over the last couple of years we’ve had to book a slot, but I haven’t had a problem booking even at short notice.

When clearing DM’s house, I just booked in her name and took along a utility bill (was never asked for evidence though).

MoreHairyThanScary · 14/03/2026 23:00

No ours doesn’t you can just pitch up …may need to queue on a weekend but usually straight in.

Changingplace · 14/03/2026 23:02

No booking at all, we can go whenever we like, I guess it depends who is running your council services.

JustGiveMeReason · 15/03/2026 00:18

Ours do.
Started in Covid, and I guess that gave the evidence for how much better it is than having to sit and queue, which used to lead to the roads being blocked and more and more road rage.

Just over the border you don't, but it is a much less populated Council.
You do need to have proof of residency though.

I agree it's a mystery why people will drive to the middle of nowhere to dump a sofa rather than taking it to the tip, it's not as though you suddenly think at midnight "best get rid of that sofa". Round here you never need to take old washing machines, ovens and dishwashers to the tip, just leave them by your front gate and they'll be gone in 30 minutes.

herbalteabag · 15/03/2026 10:01

We have to book but it's silly as you can book 15 mins before arrival and there was never a queue even before the booking system as there are loads of bays to park in. Because I think it's silly I don't worry about being late or not turning up - once I was still eating lunch so just rebooked for an hour later.
They tried to frame it as a good thing so they can have the right staff, spread people out etc. but it makes no difference whatsoever as most people book on the day itself, the only difference is that they know who you are!

macshoto · 15/03/2026 10:55

Ours introduced appointments (and various other ‘rules’) but (after a few months) then backtracked on the appointments. You do need proof of residence.

They also threatened to close the local tip on economy grounds, which would have made the next nearest one in our county a 60 mile round trip (currently ‘just’ 30 mile round trip)…

boys3 · 15/03/2026 12:13

No booking or proof of residency needed here. They did have both during Covid which to be fair worked pretty well. Fairly rural, a long queue here would be half a dozen cars.

MsGreying · 15/03/2026 12:33

Our local ones don't.

They display a % recycled each month.

But we are interrogated about what we're taking.
They open black bin bags of general waste too sometimes.

Their book and clothes recycling are often full so that goes into general waste.

I've got some knives to recycle (I'm really reluctant to give them away on Free FB Groups and I don't think charity shops take them.) I've no idea which bin they'll go in.

muddyford · 15/03/2026 12:36

There are two tips we can use and neither requires booking.

Ohcrap082024 · 15/03/2026 13:22

Ours does and has done since Covid. It can be annoying but there has been a fantastic knock on effect in our neighbourhood.

We now have a big WhatsApp group for recycling. Before going to the tip, anything that could possibly be taken by someone else is put on the group
chat. About 75-80% of stuff is claimed and collected by someone on the group.

Of course, not things like renovation rubbish and the like. But things like old garden toys, pots, shelves that look
like they are beyond saving. Stuff that you probably wouldn’t give to the charity shops. Someone in the group will claim it and do it up.

We do far fewer tip runs now. Many neighbours say the same. And it all started because we couldn’t be faffed with the tip booking system. A big win.

SquigglePigs · 15/03/2026 13:35

We don't have to book a slot but we do need to have pre-registered our car to be allowed onto site.

30 minutes? You live in a posh area! The last thing I did this with was gone before I’d got back into the house 🤣

Laiste · 15/03/2026 20:52

Ours does, w midlands.

Pain in the arse.
