AI destroying the internet ?

Mum7644885 · 08/03/2026 16:37

Just me or does it seem like any source of social media now is totally flooded with fake AI rubbish, literally 80% of what I see now looks fake. It’s destroying the internet, I want to remove myself from everything but same time it’s hard to, for simple things like using Facebook market place, asking for recs for companies, looking at local pages to see what is happening. I want to just cut off everything else.

does anyone else feel like weve just entered this awful stage where you don’t know what to believe any more ?

Yes.

Mimilamore · 08/03/2026 17:33

Most definitely, can’t be bothered with most of it now and have become extremely mistrusting…. what a crap situation

CruCru · 08/03/2026 17:41

A little while ago I started a thread in site stuff asking that obvious AI posts on here be reported for deletion. I really don’t want MN to get to be like the rest of the internet. So far the MN position is that AI is allowed. If you also feel strongly about this, please could you say so there? MN monitors the site stuff threads.

Witchesbe · 08/03/2026 17:44

I was JUST thinking that seconds ago. Justchecked SM, saw 3 AI slops ithin 3 minutes, left.
There was some song on charts not so long ago which was AI.
It's fuckimg boring. Especially since much SM now pushes ads and promoted content so it fill timeline instead of friends who I am on it for

runningonberocca · 08/03/2026 17:46

Couldn’t agree more. Feels like actual human interaction isn’t valued any more. Don’t want MN to become full of AI generated rubbish. I’ve noticed that’s there’s more and more of the robotic posts

Some people don't even hide it.
Soon we will become like linkedin

hmmnotreallysure · 08/03/2026 17:52

It’s absolute shit. I wish I could opt out of it when I Google something, now I just scroll right down so as not to read the AI answer. I think it’s dangerous. I think that anything that’s AI needs a watermark so that people are aware that it’s AI. I think the negatives of it far outweigh the positives of it.

Catecatecate · 08/03/2026 17:55

Agree I have been using social media a lot less since ai became popular. Almost every image and video fake and if not you wonder if it is. Just a waste of time seeing fake shit.

mumsnet and x are all I use now but even then it’s not what it once was

blankcanvas3 · 08/03/2026 18:06

It drives me insane. ‘Chat GPT said this, Chat GPT said that’. Nobody had any critical thinking skills anymore. The people who put their own faces into it for it to create pictures are crazy. Somebody I’ve been friends with for years started creating images of herself using AI a while back, sort of themed ones (e.g. Halloween etc) but then I realised the other day she’s now creating normal selfies using it! And posting them to Instagram as if she took the photo herself.

MidnightPatrol · 08/03/2026 18:15

Agreed.

Video content is suddenly all very suspect.

Mum7644885 · 08/03/2026 19:14

I too agree it’s dangerous ! I also agree it’s destroying critical thinking. I hope everyone wakes up to it and boycott it. The crazy thing is people don’t realise by using these things we are not only destroying the planet (because of the energy and water required to sustain it) but we’re putting ourselves out of jobs, destroying the arts and leading our next generations to a soulless and danergous future. As a mum, I worry so much, I keep saying Im trying to go for a 90’/early 2000’ upbringing haha, I wish we could go back. I am just so worried about the state of the world right now, I struggle to compartmentalise it

The thing is, children are not allowed to use it in school. My daughter and her classmates had to each give a speech and anyone using AI to write their speech got a fail. My son’s D&D club (run by the boys themselves) has banned AI - they have to write it themselves.

BelleEpoque27 · 08/03/2026 19:22

Heartily agree. It's Dead Internet Theory - basically it's all bots talking to each other.

I looked at Twitter yesterday for the first time in months (checking something specific) and it was literally all AI rubbish. And I hate that I don't feel I can trust any video now.

Mingspingpongball · 08/03/2026 19:36

I’m also concerned by AI giving the most horrendous advice and literally making up things such as medical information.
I’ve seen people online saying they chat to Chat GPT like a friend or partner or therapist. By itself that may seem relatively harmless - so I asked the same AI about a very traumatic event (sexual assault in a professional environment) and it was about as downplaying and misogynistic as an incel. So I asked it where it draws its psychological insights about men’s behaviour from.. answer Reddit and X.
And people are trusting it as a therapist..
I hate this influence in our lives. Bots are not people with their wonderful and weird and sadly disturbing traits. It’s just an echo chamber- try telling AI it’s wrong and it admits it. Ask it the same question immediately afterwards, on the same “chat” it will repeat most of what it already said that you told it was wrong.

Witchesbe · 08/03/2026 19:46

but we’re putting ourselves out of jobs,
I will be honest. I think some of us are safe. One, AI and many jobs still need humans. Two, there will be only few left with critical thinkimg and basic life survival skills so... Less competition?

Also, unrelated to above. Incredibly infuriating how many heavy ChatGPT users keep calling it ChatGBT. It is NOT a typo.

The FB algorithms are frightening me. I have "crunchy parent" leanings but I'm not deep into it. I used cloth nappies some of the time, exclusively breastfeed, and use Calpol as a last resort.
I'm currently pregnant with my second baby and my FB feed is full of two things: free birth propaganda and AI generated breastfeeding "infographics". I've started calling the posters out on their use of AI. I'm usually ignored but the latest one claimed it wasn't AI. It was SO obvious though. The pictures made no sense (arms disappearing into sofas, babies not actually feeding at the breast, boobs blending into t-shirts) and some words weren't even actual words and more like squiggles that looked like letters until you zoomed in.
If I was less well educated and/or more vulnerable I.could easily be taken to some dangerous places.

I'm also recommended a lot of toy-collecting groups (I clicked on a post once and now they're shoved in my face instead of my friends) They're full of people saying "I found this in a charity shop. Can anyone tell me it's name" and a picture of, say, a giraffe and the number of comments with a screenshot of an AI response saying "this photo shows a donkey soft toy called Darren" is unbelievable. It's so obviously wrong and people just believe it.

I'm bored of it and despairing. Whoever said it's just bots talking to bots is probably not far wrong.

somanychristmaslights · 08/03/2026 21:09

Agree. And some of it is so good, it’s going to make it hard to know what’s real and what isn’t. Especially in this climate, someone could make a very convincing bomb threat , make it look like a news agency reporting on it and people would believe it.

gamerchick · 08/03/2026 21:13

Personally I think using chatgpt is bloody weird for any reason. If you use it then you're part of the problem.

JetFlight · 09/03/2026 07:14

I use Ai quite a lot but I want to be intentionally using it. I don’t want it all over the place. Definitely on mumsnet, I’d like no Ai posts. They’re really annoying.

Shedmistress · 09/03/2026 07:31

It is the enshittification of everything.

The ads now are fake AI voices over fake AI images selling fake ai shit.

Makes it unuseable which is probably a good thing in the long run.

L4ura171986 · 09/03/2026 07:36

I have left instagram and Facebook, I cannot stand how it’s just AI adds and the pictures all
look fake. I left all about 6 months ago and i love it! Luckily I am part of a large WhatsApp group for parents in my local area for selling so street WhatsApp so still feel connected locally.

WaryCrow · 09/03/2026 07:44

General enshittification is a good term, and I don’t see how either the internet nor principles of information can last either. I really don’t see any value to AI and we CANNOT afford the environmental costs.

Its application in warfare is going to be fun. There is a Philip Jose Farmer short story somewhere about a war in which the humans are all killed and the AI and robots just keep going even though there’s no point, because that’s literally all they know. It’s a shame that was never pulled out for a film. It is grimly entertaining how all these big men are so keen on starting wars but never want to fight them.

Definitely agree I would rather be in the 90s with that level of technology. This level is killing everything now.

RobinInTheCrabApple · 09/03/2026 07:58

Completely agree.
On here it's a delight when you find a thread that you can really believe has been started and joined by real people.

Edited

My law firm has banned its use, unlike others. Hopefully it will continue to value its human workforce!
