Net curtains are not a legal requirement!!??

NetcurtainProblem · 06/03/2026 17:41

Have had a visit from the person whose house backs onto ours. We have small gardens so it’s very close (new build estate).

She asked me to get net curtains! Apparently it’s a legal requirement for privacy and modesty reasons when houses are so close together ?
That they can see me eating in my kitchen and can see directly into my bedroom.

If I’m getting dressed / changed I shut the actual curtains??

In the morning I do like to open them and have tea / breakfast in bed. I’m not doing naked pilates or anything!
My kitchen table faces out towards the garden but I fail to see how them being able to see me eating is a modesty issue ?

I explained I don’t like nets. Also I can see that they have nets????!!!!!

She told me she will take it further as it could be seen as a nuisance issue ?

Mum8686 · 06/03/2026 20:16

Oh my god, i have has a monumentally shitty week and I am so sorry @NetcurtainProblem but this has literally made me spit my tea out laughing.

Thank you so very much for this!!!!

Your neighbour is batshit!

If it helps, we had a lady, not old by any means, probably mid to late 50's, who called out to me during the heatwave mid way through covid lockdown 6x̌1 to tell me it was illegal to peg my knickers out ok the line. As a larger lady with an unapologetic love of massive pants I told her to just think of them as a sun shade sail and wandered back into the house (in my nightie no less)

I want a job in the Council that monitors the " usage therefore of net curtains to prevent the eyeball burning of such sights as to be offensive to man and beast " and fines of up £10 per window . Non compliance to result in death by hanging on a curtain rod or being thrown into a lace covered jail cell.

Tablesandchairs23 · 06/03/2026 20:20

Who has net curtains these days! Tell her to stop perving on you or you'll report her.

Another thank you from someone who has had a shitty week, thoroughly enjoying this!

I sit having my tea and breakfast in bed at the weekend with the blind up, couldn't give a monkeys. I can also see into my back neighbours' houses.

XenoBitch · 06/03/2026 20:26

Give her something to look at. Proper offensive stuff.

OP is this you? Be honest now.

Sudagame · 06/03/2026 20:34

I have a pathological hatred of net curtains. I was a landlord a while ago and some (young as it happens) tenants took the new blinds down (which we had said not to, in the tenancy agreement) and put nets up, making holes in the uPVC window frames for the hooks to hang the wires on The blinds were chucked in a corner of the garage to go mouldy and couldn't be salvaged when they moved out.
Some lovely modern social housing was built locally recently, l read they had been inspired by housing styles in the Netherlands and l couldn't believe horrible grubby chinzy looking net curtains went up in some windows as soon as they were occupied. They'd all had blinds fitted on completion too and l wondered if they had suffered same fate as mine.

NetcurtainProblem · 06/03/2026 20:35

I’m just so confused as it was such a focus on me eating . I have toast or fruit and yogurt for breakfast it just makes me feel really weird that they’ve been noticing me eating ? And only me ?!! DP eats at the table too ?! No mention of him!

Have a local cake maker make a super realistic cake of a baby... a red velvet filled one.
And then have a gorge fest in your bed. Cake is a suitable breakfast 😅

Chatsbots · 06/03/2026 20:37

People are weird.

I once lived in a cul-de-sac where a neighbour refused to talk to us for the entire time we lived there as we didn't put curtains up quickly enough for her liking.

Tbf, I might put up a small bit of security film to block their view but that would be more for my privacy.

NetcurtainProblem · 06/03/2026 20:37

And I’m thinking of all the times I’ve opened the curtains for some natural light and sat in bed drinking my tea and just waking up slowly and they’ve been watching it feels a bit strange. I hate nets though they make me feel a bit miserable blocking out light. It’s the fact they have nets too ! So they must be making a real effort to look at me

What’s her name? Annette? She sounds like a complete and utter loon. Wants to take it further… 🤪

She has caught her husband with the binoculars

Absolutely this. Many many years ago I went to see my brother's family in their new house. It was a hot summer's day and my sister-in-law was giving me the tour. In an upstairs bedroom we looked out onto the garden to see my brother peeking through a hole in the fence at the woman next door who was sunbathing topless.

It's "Nettie" for short!

Munchyseeds2 · 06/03/2026 20:42

Legal requirement?? 😂
Is she English?

FancyCatSlave · 06/03/2026 20:43

Oh that is hilarious. You absolutely must have some fun with this.

And then report her for harassment if she keeps on.

Net curtains are an abomination. Let there be light!

MarchWindsAnd · 06/03/2026 20:43

onelumporthree · 06/03/2026 20:09

Ah yes. There's also the later 'Nosy Parkers And Peeping Toms (Prevention thereof)' addendum to Paragraph 28b(ii) the above Act, which was brought in the following year I believe.

Oh, come on! All these ancient cases.

Things have moved on a lot since then, as confirmed by the recent Supreme Court decision UKSC/2025/007
which was Big Net Curtain (in liquidation) (Appellant) v Pearl-Clutcher and Another and Their Friends Parker and Tom (Respondent).

The judgement is too complicated for me to summarise here.

FettleOfKish · 06/03/2026 20:45

Christ on a bike. I’d get some window film off Amazon but have it delivered to her, if she’s that bothered. A few years ago a guy local to us actually got done for public indecency for wanking in his own bed. His curtains were open and an opposite neighbour reported him to the police, instead of you know, simply pointing her eyes in another direction.
