I can’t wear this dress.. Can I?

Let me preface this by saying I’ve recently lost 4st and gone from a 30 to a 20/22 in clothes.

My daughter is getting married in May, 2nd time and I’m struggling to fine a dress that I’m happy in. Bearing in mind I’ll be seeing lots of people that haven’t seen me for a year so although the day is all about my DD, I am aware that I want to look as good as I can.

I’ve been shopping and tried lots of dresses on but 20/22 is still plus size and I’m a little limited with mobility issues. So….. Ive bought a dress, or 10 on Vinted to see what style I like myself in.

Ive found one that I’m comfortable and happy with, and my DH said it’s the one! Bless him every day I’m parading around in a different frock!

What I can’t get past though, it’s from SHEIN.

I can’t wear a second hand dress from SHEIN can I?

I dont use shein myself but a good friend has had a few wedding style dresses and they have looked really nice on.

Do shein sell second hand too? I never knew this.

ApolloandDaphne · 24/02/2026 13:03

Of course you can. No one will know it is second hand or from Shein. They will just see you in a lovely dress looking happy as your DD gets married.

If the dress looks good then wear it! Placemarking for the pic to be approved

It’s Shein brand, bought 2nd hand off Vinted.

Go for it op at least the dress is getting more than one life!

Hope you feel wonderful and have a lovely time.

I’m not sure if what the issue is. You’ve found a a dress you love at price you can afford. Good luck with the wedding! 💐

rainbowstardrops · 24/02/2026 13:12

I wouldn’t care less where it’s from as long as it looks nice and you feel comfortable in it. Is there a photo?

Moen · 24/02/2026 13:13

Of course you can! I bet you look fabulous in it, and it’s not going to landfill - win win!

gototogo · 24/02/2026 13:15

Forget where it’s from, does it make you feel happy wearing it? Is it easy to wear (doesn’t need fiddling with and constantly adjusting) can you wear comfortable underwear underneath (I had dresses that need strapless bras). The fashion police here may not approve but a price tag or brand doesn’t matter if you like it

brendaschmenda · 24/02/2026 13:18

Never used Shein but I bought a dress from “everything five pounds . Com” about 15 years ago I still
wear it a few times a year, despite having many more expensive dresses.

If you like it, wear it

No photo. Just look for SHEIN dress on Vinted in Blue/green with pleated skirt. There’s hundreds!

Looks great - go for it!

When I got married I wore a dress I found on Vinted that cost £35. I told a few close friends but otherwise no one was any the wiser. It felt fantastic on, looked amazing in the pics and I had some lovely comments from guests about it. I wasn’t particularly looking for a bargain but got it to try on and see what the style was like ahead of a bridal shop appointment (which I ended up cancelling!) Ended up putting more money behind the bar!
I say go for it! It’s not how much it cost that matters, it’s how you feel in it. Enjoy the wedding :)

DramaAlpaca · 24/02/2026 13:31

Of course you can wear it!

OP, when I got married, my headdress was from a sale in a local shop. Faux pearls, It cost only £8. It was actually perfect.

Mum said "Don't tell anyone how much it cost!"

I'm not sure why, but you appear to be making a problem where there isn't one.

Just wear it or don't.

SurreySenMum26 · 24/02/2026 13:54

I have worn a Shein dress to Royal Ascot. Why not? It was already about four years old at that point. To put it into context I'm normally in Boden dress at these type of events.

Ariela · 24/02/2026 13:56

Cut the label out and tell everyone you bought it in a designer preloved store (Yup that's all Vinted is really, isn't it?! )
Then wear it as intended, if it suits you who cares where it's from?!

PS my funeral outfit of choice came from a secondhand shop, it's actually Betty Barclay for (some USA shop chain I never heard of). Was on the bargain rail for £3 because it was labelled in USA size as UK size - so obviously folk were trying on this thinking it was their size and it was WAY too small. Everyone compliments me on it.

SargeMarge · 24/02/2026 13:58

I just stayed in a £1500 a night hotel room, where 3 courses in the restaurant cost a minimum of around £220, then a very expensive wine list on top.
We got chatting to people whilst having drinks in the whisky room, two couples there together… both the women giggled about wearing dresses from Shein in a place like that. So, I’m sure you can wear it to a wedding and just not tell anyone.

CoCoJones26 · 24/02/2026 14:01

Wear it, enjoy it and put the money you saved towards something special...maybe some jewellery to wear on the day?
