I can’t wear this dress.. Can I?

Let me preface this by saying I’ve recently lost 4st and gone from a 30 to a 20/22 in clothes.

My daughter is getting married in May, 2nd time and I’m struggling to fine a dress that I’m happy in. Bearing in mind I’ll be seeing lots of people that haven’t seen me for a year so although the day is all about my DD, I am aware that I want to look as good as I can.

I’ve been shopping and tried lots of dresses on but 20/22 is still plus size and I’m a little limited with mobility issues. So….. Ive bought a dress, or 10 on Vinted to see what style I like myself in.

Ive found one that I’m comfortable and happy with, and my DH said it’s the one! Bless him every day I’m parading around in a different frock!

What I can’t get past though, it’s from SHEIN.

I can’t wear a second hand dress from SHEIN can I?

If it's that it's second-hand from a cheaper brand, I wouldn't worry, if you like it, it suits you, you feel comfortable and happy, then go for it.

If you're feeling uncomfortable about Shein being a fast-fashion brand that isn't very ethical, at least the dress is getting a second wear. Could you find a charity that supports women in clothing industries overseas to make a donation to?

krustykittens · 24/02/2026 14:07

All people are going to see is that you look happy so I wouldn't worry about where the dress is from or how much it cost. I think a PPs idea about dressing it up with a lovely piece of jewellery is a good one. The jewellery you will always have as a reminder of a great day.

purplecorkheart · 24/02/2026 14:12

Would you be happy to wear it if you bought it in a boutique and paid £150 for it? If the answer is yes, then wear it

Thank you all for your input.
I think part of the worry is when Enter the church, someone else may be wearing it too as it seems to be a very popular dress!

Why not?

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 24/02/2026 14:21

I wore a SHEIN dress to my daughter’s wedding. I bought, tried on, and returned about 30 other dresses and couldn’t find anything that looked better on me.

BillieWiper · 24/02/2026 14:21

Idk if this is true, but the bigger sizes in shein come up small and the fabric can look more see through etc. I buy stuff from there and the sizes are small. I can wear the small in most bottoms or some dresses but in tops it would be medium. And I'm usually a 6/8.

But if it looks nice wear it. If not just give to charity shop. I don't think shein is any worse quality wise than something like h&m or Primark.

SirChenjins · 24/02/2026 14:22

If you love it, wear it! If you're worried about the cost, splurge on some lovely shoes, bag and jewellry, and get your hair, nails and make-up done to take it up to the budget you had in mind Smile

wishingonastar101 · 24/02/2026 14:22

I wouldn't - just because I don't agree with buying crap from China. The environmental footprint and the treatment of their factory workers...
At least the dress is second hand.

FairyBatman · 24/02/2026 14:30

In principle if you like it and it’s suitable for the event then wear it. YABVU not to sure a picture though 😄

Manymoresometimes · 24/02/2026 14:54

How can people say when they cant see the dress?

CookingFatCat · 24/02/2026 15:00

You could buy a high end dress and it might still be made of the same fabric in China for more £££.

pontipinemum · 24/02/2026 15:18

Is the problem that it was £3 that you don't feel like you have spent enough for such a special occasion? My mothers outfit for my wedding cost nearly €500 (I know I had to pay for it). No one will know how much you paid.

You don't need to pay out a load of money to look good.

SummerFate · 24/02/2026 15:43

LookAtThatMartin · 24/02/2026 13:20

This part of the problem. It was £3!

So? No one’s going to ask to see the receipt!

Tryagain26 · 24/02/2026 15:47

Do you like it? Does it make you feel comfortable? Is it the nicest one of all those you've tried?
Does your daughter like it. I'd chose my daughter's opinion over my husband's any day!
If yes to all those then yes wear it.

HangingOutAtTheRialto · 24/02/2026 15:48

If it's the thing you feel good in, who cares where it's from? Just make sure it isn't see-through when the sun or certain types of artificial light catches it, as many thinner fabrics can be. You can always wear it with a slip or similar underneath if it is, just double check. Some thinner or cheaper fabrics can look fine in some lights but be totally transparent in others.

Ariela · 24/02/2026 13:56

Cut the label out and tell everyone you bought it in a designer preloved store (Yup that's all Vinted is really, isn't it?! )
Then wear it as intended, if it suits you who cares where it's from?!

PS my funeral outfit of choice came from a secondhand shop, it's actually Betty Barclay for (some USA shop chain I never heard of). Was on the bargain rail for £3 because it was labelled in USA size as UK size - so obviously folk were trying on this thinking it was their size and it was WAY too small. Everyone compliments me on it.

Edited

Why would OP need to cut the label out? What kind of weddings do you go to if people are checking the labels on each others dresses?

I'm the sort of person that would inadvertently leave a label sticking out, so I'd cut it out 'just in case'

Climbingrosexx · 24/02/2026 17:28

I have never used Shein but know a few who have and love it. At the end of the day you could spend a fortune on a dress and spend the day fidgeting and uncomfortable. If the Shein dress looks nice and is comfy who cares where it was from and how much it cost? More to the point who would know? If the Shein dress is your favourite then go for it! 😊

ERthree · 24/02/2026 17:30

40 years ago my Mum bought a stunning MOB dress it was very very expensive, the day before the wedding she saw one in BHS for a tenner and that is what she wore.

stayathomegardener · 24/02/2026 17:34

I’m exhausted just not seeing the dress!

If we could see it we could perhaps suggest other brands on Vinted with the same vibe but made from natural fibres or with a better cut.

LookAtThatMartin · 25/02/2026 13:16

That’s the one. X

When my DD married the first time, I was a size 28/30. I ended up travelling to a dress shop in Stockport where there was one outfit that fit me. It was £650 and the matching hat was £179.
I still have the outfit but never wore it again.
Anyway, the dress has been posted so fill your boots!

It's beautiful. And because you got it second hand, you are doing your bit to stem the tide of disposable fashion. Wear it with pride and joy.
