All the confectionary tastes soooo different nowadays

It started with them mucking about with bag sizes - fine. All is good in moderation. Bought some Haribo a while back and there was something different about it! The gummies were harder, the flavour a bit bland, I couldn’t put my finger on it. Then today I bought some fruit pastilles (elite sweet which is why I’m so outraged I’ve started this thread). Again, the texture is worse - they were perfect and now they get stuck to your teeth.

I do understand it’s probably to do with reducing sugars etc etc so they’re changing the formulas BUT on the rare occasion I wanted a little something to take the edge off 😂😂😂 I’ve been met with disappointment.

Tell me I’m not the only one! Share your recent disappointing snack findings.

Also any detective MNtters fancy proving my theory that they’re changing recipes?

Divine is lovely especially the orange and ginger one. Also Tony’s.

Otherwise Leonidas, Rococo etc but they are expensive.

Disturbia81 · 21/02/2026 13:10

Yes so much is not worth the calories now so I only treat myself to more expensive stuff occasionally

Desperatelyseekingreason · 21/02/2026 14:07

I know it gets a lot of love so I tried the Tony’s chocolate. I have to say I was completely disappointed.

Recently DH was lucky enough to win a very, very expensive chocolate hamper which was delicious but not hugely better than my favourites which are Lidl, Aldi and Marks and Spencer. They have proper chocolate taste and texture.

My sweet treat now is Bahlsen Choco Leibniz biscuilts, but they've shot up in price from £1.25 to £2.25 (whilst reducing the number of biscuits in a pack, naturally)!

I was SHOCKED when I saw how few there are in a pack. SHOCKED I tell you.
Still lovely though....nibble the chocolate round the outside and then slowly eat the rest in a delicious biscuit/choc combo.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 21/02/2026 15:33

I've got to agree with those saying Tony's isn't very good. I won four bars in the Postcode Lottery a little while ago and was very excited. They're just cheap-feeling and tasteless. (I ate them all, obviously, just to be sure.)

deeahgwitch · 21/02/2026 15:45

Even Lindt has palm oil afaik ☹️

HarryVanderspeigle · 21/02/2026 16:09

I was enjoying aldi moser roth dark chocolate in my hot chocolate. Lidl and aldi tend to meet European standards, so have less sadness in them. But I am trying to avoid upf's now too, so that's them out for having emulsifiers. Need to up my budget!

Fruit pastilles are awful now since they made them vegan, the texture is wrong.

But they have messed around with them before. And fruit gums. They are an abomination these days.

But the worst thing is that it is so difficult to get boiled sweets (I prefer them because it's easier to stick to one or two, rather than eating half a packet of soft sweets!). I end up having to get them from garden centres, none of the supermarkets stock them other than the odd bag of mints.

And most chocolate is horrible too. Why can't they leave things alone?

I fell down a rabbit hole one night and watched loads of videos on this. Basically most branded chocolate now is 20% cocoa which is the legal minimum limit and they’ve replaced milk solids with palm oil. That’s why it tastes like shite now. Penguins have gone below the legal limit so can’t say they’re chocolate, that have to say ‘chocolate flavour’.
lots of supermarket own brands still use a good amount of cocoa and no palm oil, just check the label. Lidl do a lovely version of whole nut

Edited

They can't have replaced all the milk solids as they're always in the ingredients list.

Inspired by this thread I’ve just added M&S kitkats to my order.

Think I will start looking at M&S for chocolate treats from now on. Thanks to yourself and others for the tip.

The only other bars of chocolate I love are Ritter Sport but they are hard to come by. Lidl often stock them but not always in the flavours I like!

Ahhhh my favourite is the white chocolate hazelnut Ritter!!

Try eatern european shops for hard sweets if you have around. Bonpari were still nicelast time I had them. Also lots of international shops have many different varieties of hard sweets

I've also just trotted along to M&S and bought a pack of them. I drew the line at the coffee-filled eggs as not massively keen. If they did turkish delight filled ones then I could get on board.

Anyway, I'm just on my first month of WLI and counting calories. I have plenty of cals left to enjoy a whole one with a cuppa soon. Waiting for DP to get home so we can find a film to watch and enjoy the choc.

Am sure it'll be delicious!

Have just checked the bars that I buy, they don't seem to use palm oil, whew!

Have you tried https://www.aquarterof.co.uk ?

They've been around probably a couple of decades now and specialise in 'forgotten' sweets.

I bought a bag of galaxy mini Easter eggs from Asda recently and they tasted absolutely revolting- nothing like I remember Galaxy tasting like. It didn’t taste of chocolate at all. It tasted of sweet gloop and got stuck in my teeth, I assume it’s been owned by one of these big corporations that pump it full of palm oil and keep the chocolate to a minimum to maximise profits. Personally I think if the cocoa content is below a certain % then it shouldn’t be allowed to be called chocolate and should be labelled “chocolate flavour” instead.

Was thinking the same.

I got some CadburyButtons to have on pancakes. I ended up throwing them away. They tasted horrible.

The cocoa and milk is still there, but the percentages have been adjusted, much lower than they previously were. Hence the flavour difference
