All the confectionary tastes soooo different nowadays

It started with them mucking about with bag sizes - fine. All is good in moderation. Bought some Haribo a while back and there was something different about it! The gummies were harder, the flavour a bit bland, I couldn’t put my finger on it. Then today I bought some fruit pastilles (elite sweet which is why I’m so outraged I’ve started this thread). Again, the texture is worse - they were perfect and now they get stuck to your teeth.

I do understand it’s probably to do with reducing sugars etc etc so they’re changing the formulas BUT on the rare occasion I wanted a little something to take the edge off 😂😂😂 I’ve been met with disappointment.

Tell me I’m not the only one! Share your recent disappointing snack findings.

Also any detective MNtters fancy proving my theory that they’re changing recipes?

I think a lot of chocolate has changed in taste. Other threads on this subject say it’s due to them using different oil. Tony’s isn’t too bad, but dairy milk isn’t the same anymore. I don’t really buy sweets, but I can imagine it’s the same with those , maybe using less sugar ?

BangFlash · 20/02/2026 22:51

Yes it's awful now. Chocolate should be cocoa butter and mass, sugar, maybe milk, not palm oil, reduced fat cocoa and artificial sweeteners. Its vile.

I feel the same about biscuits and cakes, there's very little I buy because I just can't eat them.

And desserts in restaurants. They look and sound good and taste terrible.

Its good that it makes me eat less sweet stuff, but sad when I want something and walk round the shop coming out empty handed. I do bake but then I eat it all so its not ideal.

Chocolate is definitely not what it was.

Dairy milk is revolting now- very little mainstream chocolate so good any more. Tony’s chocoloney is one of the few exceptions.

WonderfulSmith · 20/02/2026 23:41

Get chocolate from M&S. I just had their take on mini eggs. Much better than Cadbury.

AelitaQueenofMars · 20/02/2026 23:45

Palm oil

LoveheartBear · 20/02/2026 23:47

I agree with you. My husband and children were eating Mini Eggs y’day, and they all said the texture has changed. The shell felt soft, which they didn’t like. The chocolate definitely isn’t what it used to be.

Re: chewy sweets, I wonder if it’s partly because a lot of them have become vegan/vegetarian (I’m veggie, so not being rude to veggies!). I also think the reduced amount of sugar used is a huge factor.

7238SM · 20/02/2026 23:55

Other than just recipes changing, our tastes and smell changes/declines as we age. Maybe what you detect now isn't the same as you did many years ago. 🤷‍♀️

I can still remember the taste of the mini dairy milks in the vending machine I got for Christmas in the early 80s. Absolutely nothing like it now 😞

Clubbiscuit · 21/02/2026 00:07

Tony’s chocoloney gives me the same feeling of delight that Dairy Milk used to give me but no longer does. I bought some Mini Eggs tonight for the cinema and both DH and I were shocked at how rubbish they are. They used to be liovely. Now they are all soft and greasy.

badgersbadgerseverywhere · 21/02/2026 00:14

You can’t even have a nice sugary treat drink to wash down your revolting new chocolate. Everything’s been ruined by the addition of artificial sweeteners. I used to love an iced Ribena on a hot day - I can’t stand the stuff nowadays.

Coke is the only big name to have resisted artificial sweeteners, but I swear there’s still something different about it lately. I’ve tried cans from several different shops this year and they were all strangely flat and acidic, and more like diet than regular.

TowerOfWashing · 21/02/2026 00:18

M&S doing a 4 finger version of Kit Kat that tastes amazing. Available in a multipack (£3 for 4). No palm oil.

I boycott Nestlé anyway as they're such an awful company - though it's not much of a hardship really as their chocolate has always been dreadful.

I did notice on the fruit pastilles packaging it does say vegan! I did wonder if they always have been and they just changed!

Lots of you saying Tony’s. I never thought to go for that one. I’ll have a look next time.

They've literally sucked the joy out of sweets and chocolate today. I don't buy anything eith palm oil but even then the chocolate is disappointing.

70s galaxy was heavenly.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 21/02/2026 07:05

I found my palate changed as I became an adult and I didn't crave sweet things as much. Then I became really discerning about desserts. Sweets like Haribo have always been ultra processed rubbish and barely edible.

PeonyPatch · 21/02/2026 07:07

Agreed. Most mainstream chocolate tastes horrendous now. I was eating quality street at Christmas and it was hideous. It left my teeth with this vile film / coating that I can’t explain. Threw them out. I go to M&S for chocolate now. Always check the ingredients.

bumphousebump · 21/02/2026 07:11

Same, tried a mini egg and spat it out. Bought a snickers and it tasted just weirdly sweet. I’ve really stopped buying Cadbury and now buy coop dark chocolate or M&$ Dark milk chocolate which tasted like chocolate used to taste.

Doodadidi · 21/02/2026 07:14

My favourite chocolate which actually has a taste rather than a bland greasy feeling is
Wiilie’s Milk of the Gods.
They come in small square cardboard packets and are heavenly.
They’re not that easy to find- farm shops and
Gloucester services on the M5 sell it so it’s my occasional treat.

I think the big companies want us to consume their chocolate and snacks every day in large quantities so have gone down the ‘pile it high, sell it cheap’ route either awful cheap ingredients.

SpigTheFish · 21/02/2026 07:20

Chocolate no longer melts at body temperature. It just becomes slime and has a weird aftertaste.

Desserts and cakes and biscuits are too sweet and syrupy, again, with an aftertaste.

The gum drops no longer contain fruit juice (concentrate) or sugar so thats why they taste awful and artificial.

Manufacturers dont care about their products now - it's all about the money. Very sad.

Ooooof I don’t know about the ‘sell it cheap’ part. Nothing costs £1 anymore!

Yes me too! I’m more of a savoury snack person now so when I do crave something sweet I’m met with utmost disappointment

I’m not really a milk chocolate fan but I used to love an Alpini from Thorntons. Bought a box of the Continental Chocolates yesterday to indulge this and the disappointment was huge. Totally different, the texture has completely changed, much softer and oilier, and disgustingly sweet. DH will probably eat the rest of the box but I won’t buy them again.

JD Gross dark chocolate from Lidl is my go to treat. Great flavour and a wonderful snap.

knitnerd90 · 21/02/2026 07:27

Tastes do change but there's been a lot of press about the changes in chocolate due to the price increases for cocoa. All the mass market brands are cutting down on the amount they use. This is why some of them can't legally be called chocolate anymore.

Plinketyplonks · 21/02/2026 07:27

Yes! I bought some Haribo tangfastics last week and they re gone all hard? I didn’t like them enough to bring on our road trip this weekend!
