All the confectionary tastes soooo different nowadays

It started with them mucking about with bag sizes - fine. All is good in moderation. Bought some Haribo a while back and there was something different about it! The gummies were harder, the flavour a bit bland, I couldn’t put my finger on it. Then today I bought some fruit pastilles (elite sweet which is why I’m so outraged I’ve started this thread). Again, the texture is worse - they were perfect and now they get stuck to your teeth.

I do understand it’s probably to do with reducing sugars etc etc so they’re changing the formulas BUT on the rare occasion I wanted a little something to take the edge off 😂😂😂 I’ve been met with disappointment.

Tell me I’m not the only one! Share your recent disappointing snack findings.

Also any detective MNtters fancy proving my theory that they’re changing recipes?

Dairy Milk doesn’t have enough cocoa to call itself chocolate any more. Look at what it’s called next time you’re in the shop.
Used to love a bag of choc buttons or a bar of Dairy Milk.
Toni’s is nice.

PersephoneParlormaid · 21/02/2026 07:30

Toblerone doesn’t have palm oil

PersephoneParlormaid · 21/02/2026 07:31

I had a Diet Coke yesterday, haven’t had one for years, and it tasted so synthetic, I won’t be having another.

Tony’s Chocolonely or M&S. Both actually taste like chocolate!

I have to say I never liked Diet Coke but over the years got used to Coke Zero. Every now and again I try classic but I hate the way it foams up and makes my teeth feel after!! But Zero over Diet any day

Has anyone noticed how different milk tray are? I was bought some in January and thought they were odd, then again for Valentine’s Day and didn’t enjoy them at all!! Used to be my favourite 😔

I’m not really a milk chocolate fan but I used to love an Alpini from Thorntons. Bought a box of the Continental Chocolates yesterday to indulge this and the disappointment was huge. Totally different, the texture has completely changed, much softer and oilier, and disgustingly sweet. DH will probably eat the rest of the box but I won’t buy them again.

JD Gross dark chocolate from Lidl is my go to treat. Great flavour and a wonderful snap.

I used to love the Alpini and was similarly disappointed last time I had one. Same goes for the Viennese truffle. Promoted by this thread, I checked the ingredients and see it's probably the palm fat that is the problem here too.

Chewits and FruitTella are no good any more. I used to have such a weakness for these but they are awful now. I have a pack of FruitTella that has been lying open for a couple of months and no desire to eat them.

Lidl's own brand extra creamy chocolate is great. I have really missed chocolate, especially as I'm not a fan of Tony's, so happy to have discovered this one.

Lengokengo · 21/02/2026 07:48

Agreed! I got given some fudge recently and it tasted odd. Looked at the ingredients and there was no butter but palm oil instead. Also some wierd vegan milk substitute. Not sure if they are trying to push green credentials by being veggie/ vegan, but the no point in eating it if it tastes odd!

Pineneedlesincarpet · 21/02/2026 07:50

Nestle buying Rowntrees wrecked Smarties. The chocolate just tastes synthetic now. Most chocolate has a weird aftertaste and texture now apart from Lindt and possibly Dairy Milk which is still edible but not as good.

On tbe sweeties front, they should never have softened up Fruit Gums and Fruit Pastilles. The beauty of Fruit Gums was that they took longer to eat (and the knobbles on them).

cariadlet · 21/02/2026 07:55

I've been vegan for years so can't comment on milk chocolate but a lot of dark chocolate is still very good eg Lindt 70% bars (various flavours).

LeaveTheSweetsAlone · 21/02/2026 07:58

Interesting re palm oil. I thought we were moving away from that because it’s not easy to digest?

I did notice on the fruit pastilles packaging it does say vegan! I did wonder if they always have been and they just changed!

Morrisons own brand sweets are lovely. If you are into wine gums, mini gems, jelly babies etc. A real cut above.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 21/02/2026 08:48

The chocolate in Lidl with a picture of a hot air balloon on- almond and something - is very nice.

I've given up on Cadbury. I actually emailed them about the horrible things they've done to Creme Egg a few weeks ago and got a generic "It's as delicious as always!" reply. No it isn't, it's a packet of soya, palm oil and lies.

Bastards.

Teacup40 · 21/02/2026 08:53

No your not wrong, I'm not really a sweet person but chocolate these days is vile we had quality street at christmas and I never touched them let the dc eat them as they have a less discerning palet 😅 dont get me started on the drinks nowadays and the disgusting chemical crap they add to them!! I spose its a good thing as I need to lose weight!

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 21/02/2026 08:59

I don't get why a monster brand like Cadbury wouldn't have the sense to sell a "classics" line, there are clearly a lot of people who would pay more to get the "old" taste.

Talking of which I remember (don't I?) when Galaxy changed their recipe, I think in the 70's, before which it really was the most luscious, creamy chocolate, better than Cadbury's, which was the standard treat. So the bastards have been doing it for ever.

Daisylove1 · 21/02/2026 09:10

I fell down a rabbit hole one night and watched loads of videos on this. Basically most branded chocolate now is 20% cocoa which is the legal minimum limit and they’ve replaced milk solids with palm oil. That’s why it tastes like shite now. Penguins have gone below the legal limit so can’t say they’re chocolate, that have to say ‘chocolate flavour’.
lots of supermarket own brands still use a good amount of cocoa and no palm oil, just check the label. Lidl do a lovely version of whole nut

I agree about the quality streets - they haven’t been the same for a few years. This year (upon recommendation from Mumsnet!) We tried an M&S big mix tin - about £10 for a big tin and they were gorgeous! Tasted like quality streets used to!

I used to go into the Thorntons shop in town especially to buy a bag of the alpini chocolates. They used to hit the spot for when a chocolate craving hit. Now, they are hard lumps of sugary nothingness. An insult to the original!

Thorntons went down the route of cutting corners, costs and taste. No more Thorntons shops anymore. They have been relegated to the cheap box of chocolates category which taste of disappointment.

Might check out M&S chocs after reading the recommendations on here...

the80sweregreat · 21/02/2026 09:39

M and s chocolate isn’t too bad.
The chocolate on their covered custard creams do taste like old fashioned chocolate used to, but they are not cheap.

Nicecatneighbour · 21/02/2026 09:43

The m&s caramel chocolate buttons are my go-to for a sweet treat. Creamy and delicious.

Teaandscone · 21/02/2026 09:45

TowerOfWashing · 21/02/2026 00:18

M&S doing a 4 finger version of Kit Kat that tastes amazing. Available in a multipack (£3 for 4). No palm oil.

I boycott Nestlé anyway as they're such an awful company - though it's not much of a hardship really as their chocolate has always been dreadful.

Thanks for the heads up; I will look out for them!

Dragonscaledaisy · 21/02/2026 09:48

WonderfulSmith · 20/02/2026 23:41

Get chocolate from M&S. I just had their take on mini eggs. Much better than Cadbury.

They contain rapeseed oil. Awful cheap ingredients.

noclingfilm · 21/02/2026 09:52

Palm oil. I’m so sensitised to it now that I can almost tell without tasting it. The chocolate looks wrong, it sounds wrong (no snap), and has a simultaneously gritty and great texture. Yuck. I buy chocolate now from hand made places who do it properly.

Yes this Lidl chocolate is my new favourite. Also Aldi Salted Caramel dark choc.

The manufacturers aren’t moving away from it because it’s very cheap. Massive use of palm oil is ruining the environment as well but what you can do when the profit motive rules?
