Do you remember this Covid news footage?

Chatting to SIL last night and we were remembering news footage we watched before the Christmas of Covid when the news was coming out of China about this virus. We clearly remember watching as a family news footage (would have been on BBC normal news not online) from China of people collapsing and fitting in the streets then being zipped up on stretchers and body bags and loaded into a black and yellow van by hazmat suited doctors/army. We all clearly remember this , it was not a film. What was this footage? Covid didn't present like that at all? We remember being really scared. SiL is a nurse and we remember her saying "what the hell is this thing"
Anyone else remember this footage?

I saw this - I was staying in Barcelona with a friend who lives there just as it all kicked off and they were talking about travel etc (this is in my mind as I has to fly back yo my city and was concerned about being quarantine in BCN) and we also watched footage of authorities in China (people wearing white hazmat suits) breaking down the doors of supposed infected people… not a film, no confusion, 100% on the news

Not before Christmas 2019 you didn’t.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 20/02/2026 21:32

I checked with a friend as this thread is making me doubt myself. She remembers it as before Xmas 2019, well before too.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 20/02/2026 21:32

It wasn’t called Covid then or corona. SARS/ pneumonia virus

Lots of posters claim they remember it as pre Christmas but there is thus far absolutely no concrete proof from any of these posters other than their fallible memories.

There is however a lot of facts and evidence clearly showing it wasn't reported on until the end of December - early January.

Sitonyourdressmavis · 20/02/2026 21:35

I think my diary is good evidence

I still remember it. It was absolutely before Xmas 2019.

Could you have been talking about the swine flu in China that was mentioned on the 18th?

Sitonyourdressmavis · 19/02/2026 09:17

OK mystery still not solved I guess

The mystery is in fact solved - the answer is that you're either confused or making it up.

If you mean the 28 December MN thread just posted, that's evidence against, not for.

It was first identified on 31st December 2019 by WHO. I remember it being reported by BBC but not in the way mentioned by OP. However I do vaguely remember some footage but it didn't seem too worrying.

So no mention on major mainstream news site (BBC, Guardian, New York Times), unknown to the WHO, not one single thread about it on MN, but you knew?

I remember the poor bus driver with the men in hamza suits behind him because the hospital he was driving to is very close to my parent’s house

I remember this so well and yes it was on the news it was this reason that made me take it so seriously, it was only when I realised that nobody was dropping down dead on our streets that I realised it was all a load of bollocks, that and when I spoke to a couple of paramedics and they laughed it off after I asked them if they had been busy with Covid casualties. You wasn’t going mad they put on a good show for the news cameras

Not before Christmas.

Yes. It was a brief thing. No one else registered it. Apart from me and my friend.

And all record of it has been wiped from history. Just you and your friend knew, before the WHO? Or, could you be misremembering?

vitahelp · 20/02/2026 21:47

I recall something like this and either reading about or seeing people being sealed into buildings in China and not allowed to leave/food being dropped off inside etc.

I also clearly remember a story from the UK about a woman who was reasonably young who had got Covid in the early days and became unwell quite quickly and called herself an ambulance but by the time they got there she had died. I recall she was a nurse herself? Reading things like that did make a big difference to perception of the illness compared to how we view it now.

MabelAnderson · 20/02/2026 21:48

Sitonyourdressmavis · 19/02/2026 09:16

This is why I am confused as I know it was mentioned before Christmas due to the China trip. We haven't all hallucinated it. I also wrote about it but now it's vanished

There was some mention in the December, of a virus in China. I remember having a niggly little worry as we were going to travel to the far East. I also remember the body bags and van, but not when that was, it could have been January. A friend died in the January and I know we wondered at the time if it could be connected.

CypressGrove · 20/02/2026 21:48

There is absolutely no evidence of any new virus in China being discussed on Twitter or Reddit or Mumsnet or any main stream media before 31 December 2019. Even if you move to WeChat in China the earliest potential mentions are in mid December 2019: https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.02.24.20026682v1

People are either getting New Years muddled with Christmas or are thinking about other events.

I remember very little of the news apart from the day they announced the first lockdown and I suddenly became a "key worker" and had to drive around with an official letter in my car in case I was stopped. I remember having to take clients temperatures several times each day, wear more PPE, have my own temperature taken and clean all of the touch points and more, arrange daily entertainment for clients, reassure them that they would not die, encourage them to remain in their room if they had symptoms and refused to bang pots and pans and clap for the NHS which people disapproved of. I was very jealous of those including my own family on furlough whilst I continued to work 24 hour shifts with supposed sleepovers and there was no thanks whilst the management took themselves to work from home without a thought for us on the frontline. It was the straw that broke the camels back and I changed jobs very soon after as did several other colleagues.
