Do you remember this Covid news footage?

Chatting to SIL last night and we were remembering news footage we watched before the Christmas of Covid when the news was coming out of China about this virus. We clearly remember watching as a family news footage (would have been on BBC normal news not online) from China of people collapsing and fitting in the streets then being zipped up on stretchers and body bags and loaded into a black and yellow van by hazmat suited doctors/army. We all clearly remember this , it was not a film. What was this footage? Covid didn't present like that at all? We remember being really scared. SiL is a nurse and we remember her saying "what the hell is this thing"
Anyone else remember this footage?

Is that article supposed to prove it was in the news before Christmas 2019? Confused
If so, it's doing a terrible job.

Considering the first case of confirmed COVID19 was 1st Dec 2019 in Wuhan, what do you think was being tested in Jan 2019?

Argh typo - definitely meant end January 2020!!!

You could get tested for Covid by late January 2019 (can't remember the exact date) if you'd been to one of the 'hotspot' countries. And they've since run tests on earlier saved waste water samples.

Too late to fix this - should say Jan 2020 not Jan 2019!!

I don’t remember this but I remember being horrified at videos of people being locked in their homes and streets being disinfectanted.

It wasn’t. HTH

it was in China, alone, until at least late December. It was not ‘out there well before Christmas’ and that is factually proven.

Wastewaster testing has shown the virus was in Italy, Paris and some other places in Europe before Christmas. This has been widely reported, e.g.

temperature check at Milan central station, 03 June

Coronavirus was already in Italy by December, waste water study finds

Scientists say samples from Milan and Turin showed virus traces long before cases were confirmed.

Whilst waste water studies are accepted methods for detecting covid, these studies showing very early detection have a fair amount of question marks over them and are not fully validated - due to the low viral concentrations, reliance on a single in-house PCR method, and lack of full genome sequencing from those early samples mean most scientists treat it as indicative rather than definitive.

YelramBob · 22/02/2026 00:06

I remember going back to work after Christmas (not in the UK) and four of my customers said they were in hospital with 'pneomonia'. The virus was definitely in Europe at the end of 2019.

No it isn't supposrd to prove that. It's giving a timeline

We already know the timeline though? That's why so many of us are saying it's impossible that this footage was seen before Christmas and that people were talking about it around the dinner table.

I know the French authorities believe it was circulating in France in November 2019. They didn’t know what it was back then, but doctors were starting to see patients whose symptoms, with the benefit of hindsight, perfectly matched Covid, though obviously there was no test and the patients were testing negative for flu. This wasn’t reported until May 2020.

I think people get confused. If they’ve seen a video in 2020 of sick people in China from December 2019, they’ll file that as “December 2019” and years later they will believe that is when they watched it.

Yes, but pp were saying there's no evidence of the timeline, I was saying there is, as in the Youtube videos posted earlier

Whilst I remember a few people being ill in December the first I heard of a strange illness in China was mid January. We talked about it with friends mid February...it was coming towards us. My husband was in America late February and I told him to put his clothes in the wash as soon as he got in...he thought I was mad until someone else texted him the same thing.
We were in the UK early March and my daughter texted to say WHO had declared a pandemic. We were in Gatwick! Leo Varadkar made a speech from Washington when he was visiting for St Patrick's Day.
My daughter is a hcp and went for training with paramedics for emergency duty.
As for videos...I know we saw something from Korea about public spaces being disinfected but after we first heard about the illness in China in mid January .

Hi OP, have not read the full thread but just wanted to say that I remember that documentary very well. I’m not in the UK, but it was called the Pandemic and it was horrific how they welded people’s doors shut.
But like I said, have not read the full thread.

popofthepopsiest · 16/03/2026 20:09

It was shown here February/March 2020 I think. But we did hear about it before that, around the New Year or just after.

Why would you come onto a thread that's almost a month old and not even read it before commenting?

Stonewallslemon · 16/03/2026 20:12

I remember seeing this. There were also scenes of peoples flat doors being sealed by hazmat suited men using drills. With people inside presumably and left with ‘ supplies’.
It wasn’t a film, it was definitely news reel and it was terrifying.

busyd4y · 21/02/2026 07:18

I can't believe for a moment that you saw footage purporting to come from Italy of people dropping to the ground and being whiake off by others in hazmat suits

Where did you see that?

Well, it was shown on the most reputable news sources in Scandinavia and it was also reported in a three-part documentary by I think an Australian man who lived there (with his mum if I remember right?). It was early on.

Is it up to you to decide on a public forum? Only because I saw the thread and that documentary has recently been discussed amongst friends.

Yes, and I just wonder now how this could possibly have happened? Iit was such a strong documentary, and even weirder now when you think back and wonder if it was really true or not.

I just wanted to tell OP that I remember it too. I know it’s an old thread.
