This is interesting to me. I'm certainly not suggesting there's anything wrong/odd about the situations in which people feel self conscious - we just feel what we feel - but I'd really like to understand why having sex against the wall in your hallway is any different from having sex in a bedroom, in terms of how self-conscious you'd feel. Because it's the same partner and the same act, just in a different room. Obviously you don't have to answer the question, which I'm aware is a really nosy one, but I'm just interested really.

I don't think it can really be 'performative' if it's happening only for the benefit of the two people who are having sex in private, though. In a way I think it's the opposite of performative, as it's not something that's typically planned. it happens (or certainly has in my case) when you get spontaneously carried away.

The first time it happened to me I was about 19 or 20 and I'd been out to a gig with some friends and my boyfriend at the time, who was a bit older than me and had his own place, had kindly driven into central London to pick me up as it was too late for the train/Tube. I looked a complete state - smudged eyeliner, completely drenched in sweat.
