When did your period come back after giving birth? Especially if you breastfed?

Baby is almost 1 and mine hasn't returned! I'm not complaining, obv one less thing to juggle but I'm curious, want to make sure I'm physically fine (will mention at an upcoming GP appointment) and we would like to start TTC baby no.2 later this year.

I have been getting some cramping lately and went back to work part time a couple of weeks ago so going for hours without feeding or pumping while I'm at work. Baby still feeds fairly frequently otherwise.

Mine started again basically as soon as the postpartum bleeding stopped. I BF both until around 7/8 months and it honestly felt like I had been lied to about it helping stop periods (same for anytime I was told that about birth control). The longest I ever went without bleeding was actually during my second pregnancy.

My period came back 16 months after birth with my first, but only once I had massively cut down in order to be able to conceive DS (we wanted a small gap and there was no sign of a period coming so I tried reducing feeds - it took a very big reduction before my periods finally did come back. However, I did manage to keep feeding, and then fed all through pregnancy and into the first year post DS). DS is now 32 months old and there’s still no sign of a period. I don’t want another child so I am in no rush to limit feeding this time. I therefore suspect I am the kind of woman who would not have a period unless doing very little breastfeeding

Both times it only came back once I’d completely stopped breastfeeding.

7months. I was still breastfeeding but he started feeding a tiny bit less once eating some solids…1 feed dropped and boom! I wasn’t expecting it at all

That’s rubbish. My DFriend BF 4 and the longest she went was 4 weeks before her AF came back and I thought that was tough Flowers

4 months! And I BF for over 2 years! And I was well below my pre-pregnancy weight within two weeks of giving birth, because my thyroid went nuts. I looked emaciated. I felt utterly depleted, and I couldn't believe that my period returned to normal so quickly.

LeeshaPaper · 09/02/2026 23:05

Two years both times. I breastfed them both til 3 so it wasn't stopping by that triggered it

Cookingupmyfirstbornson · 09/02/2026 23:07

5 weeks!!!

VivienneDelacroix · 09/02/2026 23:07

I breastfed to 3yr9months. My periods came back after 23 months.

Bombinia · 09/02/2026 23:41

Six months and seven months even though I was exclusively breastfeeding, and very frequently! I was extremely disappointed.

With my EBF one, at 3 months, every 28 days like clockwork. He was breastfed regularly every few hours til 16 months. 🤷🏻‍♀️

With my formula fed one, didn’t get a natural period before I went on birth control again at 5 months. So who knows. 😂

Edited

Same as me EBF and as regular as clockwork.

britneyisfreebutnotokay · 10/02/2026 00:07

28 days later. I was horrified. Turns out my mum was ghd same. I extended breastfed exclusive and what not. Made no difference.

Paaseitjes · 10/02/2026 12:10

10 months. For my mum it was 14 so I feel a bit short changed! He's a good eater, I always had regular periods, my weight is just about healthy but went down very slowly after birth and I'm certain I'm not anaemic.

Idontspeakgermansorry · 10/02/2026 12:16

8/9 months. Night weaning can help bring it back, if you still feed at night.

ridl14 · 10/02/2026 18:47

Gosh sorry to everyone who had it come back really quickly! I would have felt very short changed as well.

@Idontspeakgermansorry right that prob does have something to do with it! He still feeds a lot through the night. We did think to start trying him with a bit of water if he's just thirsty at night, who knows if he'd accept it.

@SleafordSods thank you, that was really helpful! Very interesting there's more of a chance if you're expressing milk as well.

Thanks everyone, total range of answers! Sounds like it's normal it's not returned and prob something to do with how frequently I'm still feeding. And the cramps could still mean nothing happens for a while.

Well… my baby is 6 months (EBF) and I’m around 9 weeks pregnant so… soon?

brunetteorblonde · 10/02/2026 20:06

4 weeks, was exclusively breastfeeding, felt robbed.

Nursemumma92 · 10/02/2026 20:10
