When did your period come back after giving birth? Especially if you breastfed?

Baby is almost 1 and mine hasn't returned! I'm not complaining, obv one less thing to juggle but I'm curious, want to make sure I'm physically fine (will mention at an upcoming GP appointment) and we would like to start TTC baby no.2 later this year.

I have been getting some cramping lately and went back to work part time a couple of weeks ago so going for hours without feeding or pumping while I'm at work. Baby still feeds fairly frequently otherwise.

Four months. I wasn't impressed. I did want two children close in age though, so I was pleased (but a bit shocked) when I conceived DC2 at seven months postpartum. I was still breastfeeding, too.

tinatsarina · 09/02/2026 20:08

With my last two they're Feb 2020 and Apr 2021, my period hadn't returned as I was bf and found out I was expecting my next when the baby was 5 months, id went to get the implant in knowing id be moving to solids and formula when she was 6 months, thinking I was being proactive, they asked me to do a test in the gp and sure enough I was already pregnant again, caught first new cycle so never had a new period until my third was born lol

DS was born end of March and my period came back NYE. I was gutted! Still BFing now and he’s nearly 2.

Mine never came back between baby 1 & baby 2. I breastfed baby 1 to 13 months. After baby 2 stopped breastfeeding at 11 months, they returned a few weeks later (probably about 4 weeks, but it was 35 years ago, so I can’t remember exactly)

mimbleandlittlemy · 09/02/2026 20:24

Exclusively bf, periods came back 5 months after giving birth. I was v pissed off.

Petrie999 · 09/02/2026 20:29

Sometime between 12 and 14months after birth. I was still breastfeeding but only twice a day and not at night

Shimmysequin · 09/02/2026 20:36

My third baby is 10m old. I haven’t had a period since before the eldest was born. There are 23m between each of them and the eldest two were BF until 14m. I was down to one of two feeds in 24h with both, and weaned earlier than I probably will with number three as I was trying to get my fertility back each time. Obviously I’m not sure if stopping BF totally is what did the trick, but I did seem to conceive about two weeks after stopping both times!

Mumofteenandtween · 09/02/2026 20:38

With dd about 10 months.

With ds I am fairly certain I have not ovulated since the time I conceived him. (In 2012!) No periods by 15 months when I got a “stick in my arm”. And then continuous bleeding whilst on it (no wonder it was such a reliable form of contraception - nobody wants to shag when they are bleeding like a horror film 24/7!) until I got it taken out and went on the mini pill. I am mid 40s now so who knows what would happen if I came off the mini pill. But probably not a baby.

I wonder if I could sell that story to Take a Break - “My MIRACLE son was conceived by my LAST EVER egg!!!!!” I just won’t mention the fact that I was 33 at the time and we had only just started trying for him….

elderlyparentone · 09/02/2026 20:39

8 months, 9 months and 4 months. Breastfeeding all of them. Was mightily pissed off about the 4 months

graceinc22 · 09/02/2026 20:40

13 months (I think prompted by me going down to mostly just feeding in the morning and at bedtime rather than through the day and night like before!)

Arrivea · 09/02/2026 20:42

I don't think it ever properly did (ebf to 6 months, then breast fed alongside food to 18 months) but got pregnant as soon as we tried, whenever that was to end up with a 2.5 year gap.

BobbieTables · 09/02/2026 20:42

6 months. I breast fed for 9 months.

NailsForChristmas · 09/02/2026 20:44

Mine came back at 10 months, exactly one month after he started nursery.
He's 2.5 now and still breastfed and periods have come like clockwork every 4 weeks since they started again.
I really wish they had stayed away longer.

MrsKateColumbo · 09/02/2026 20:47

About 8 months i think after DS (I was pregnant again by the time he was 9 months) I think 4 months after DD

Both EBF.....

WonderingAndOverthinking · 09/02/2026 20:56

1st baby - breastfed for 22 months, period returned after 13 months
2nd baby - breastfed for 15 months, period returned after 11 months

Both only feeding before bed for many months before self weaning.

BlibBlabBlob · 09/02/2026 21:04

When DD was 21 months old. She was an EPIC devotee of BF though, day and night for several years. Even though I went back to work FT when she was 12 months! It was natural child spacing in action, I’d say. Well, would’ve been if we’d had more than one child.

SnuggleReal · 09/02/2026 21:09

Between 15-20 months, depending on the child.

TricNorthCarolina · 09/02/2026 21:10

Within 6 weeks! Gutted

gototogo · 09/02/2026 21:11

6 months for dd1, 15 months for dd2

MsRosewater · 09/02/2026 21:14

we did natural term breast feeding- it was at least 24 months

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 09/02/2026 21:14

It was about fifteen months with both of mine, soon after I stopped breastfeeding.

No one told me when I had my first that it's normal for periods not to start when you're breastfeeding. I spent several months worrying that maybe I was somehow still pregnant with a second baby that the doctors and midwives just hadn't noticed.

Garman · 09/02/2026 21:16

18 months, and 2 years.

ThroughTheRedDoor · 09/02/2026 21:18

4 weeks after birth both times. Both ebf. Dc1 I fed for 13 months and dc 2 for 9 months.

Jrisix · 09/02/2026 21:18

Six months with my first, but I breastfed to 18 months. My second is currently 9 months and no period yet.
