Do you like shortbread?

It's one of those foods that I never buy myself but often have it given at Christmas. I don't dislike it as such but I find it a little too sweet for my taste - that's why I prefer biscuits like HobNobs and Lotus Biscoff. Cheap shortbread is grim compared to the stuff made with clotted cream.

Get the proper stuff from Scotland....its absolutely gorgeous 😍 walkers are the best. Got some for Christmas.... lightly spiced with nutmeg and cinnamon 😋

I love it. I loathe those Lotus Biscoff things though!

Same

I only like homemade shortbread. The shop bought stuff is really stodgy and disappointing. Sadness in biscuit form😆 I make my own from a recipe in my mum’s old 1970s church cookery book. The shortbread has a bit of bite, yet melts in your mouth and has that slight tinge of sourness, which sounds revolting but is lovely. Reminds me of my childhood. Sometimes I half cover it in chocolate or add chocolate chips. But it doesn’t need chocolate tbf.

Good shortbread just tastes of butter, sugar and salt and tastes much less sweet than hobnobs to me

Exactly. Proper shortbread has a purity of taste.

PinterandPirandello · 25/01/2026 11:43

Love the tinned M and S shortbread. Buttery and not too sweet.

DiscoBeat · 25/01/2026 11:44

No - after youve made it once you realise the amount of sugar in it!

ScaredSceptic · 25/01/2026 11:44

A lot of shop bought shortbread is very average, as are a lot of the brands that do the type of tins you get at Christmas. I was given a tin from M&S and it was very meh.

The best supermarket one for me is Lidl Deluxe All Butter shortbread fingers. It's ridiculously good.

dontforgetme · 25/01/2026 11:45

I fucking love it, I can’t buy it often because I’d eat the pack in one sitting.

Gribouille · 25/01/2026 11:45

Ooh I loooove good quality, buttery shortbread! But I have to eat gluten free these days, and they're always full of xanthan gum and crumbly yet slimy, and taste fishy... 😢

Seagroves · 25/01/2026 11:46

Love it. All time favourite biscuit.

CluelessAboutBiology · 25/01/2026 11:49

@JacknDiane @muddyford I’m glad I’m not the only one. Horrible stuff seems to be everywhere at the moment, including puddings contaminated with it.

Thatcannotberight · 25/01/2026 11:51

I make chocolate chip shortbread for local fund raising events, it always sells out before the other cake type offerings. My son's scout leaders are also happy when he takes a box to scout camps.

jen337 · 25/01/2026 11:51

Don’t see how you can find shortbread to sweet compared to hobnobs and biscoff, I find the opposite, I’m sure they have considerably more sugar in them, not to mention palm oil.
Decent shortbread’s fantastic and so easy to make at home.

Squidwardthesnail · 25/01/2026 11:51

Love shortbread. Id rather have chocolate chip shortbread than a cookie. And its so easy to make so the kids "help" with some as an activity regularly. Its a favourite for everyone in our house

PocketsAndSedition · 25/01/2026 11:52

I make my own - sometimes put dark chocolate chips in - delicious!

BlackCat14 · 25/01/2026 11:53

I would never buy it, or desire it, or crave it. But if someone gives me a piece, I really enjoy it.

Happyjoe · 25/01/2026 11:53

Shop bought, not so much and it's often quite nasty now. I presume because butter is being replaced by oils now. But home made shortbread is just wonderful. Million calories a bite though!

2026IsMyYear · 25/01/2026 11:57

Funny you should ask this, i love shortbread & have v find memories of my grandparents always having the circular type that breaks into triangles. I adored it as a child.

I bought a pack of butter shortbread fingers in Aldi yesterday after seeing a good review online (& ingredients are good) but i haven't opened them yet.

ResusciAnnie · 25/01/2026 11:59

No, so dry and bland.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 25/01/2026 11:59

That revolting biscoff stuff is way sweeter than shortbread.

Fingalscave · 25/01/2026 12:01

It's my favourite biscuit, but I prefer homemade with semolina. M&S and Asda have the best if I don't get chance to make it.

CalzoneOnLegs · 25/01/2026 12:13

The Lidl ‘deluxe’ black pack ABS is made by Duncans of Deeside and they do a choc chip version too, it’s really good, as is Walkers brand in the co-op ❤️

@ScaredSceptic agree, just saw your post
