Do you like shortbread?

It's one of those foods that I never buy myself but often have it given at Christmas. I don't dislike it as such but I find it a little too sweet for my taste - that's why I prefer biscuits like HobNobs and Lotus Biscoff. Cheap shortbread is grim compared to the stuff made with clotted cream.

Yes, but it has to be home made. I make mine with a small amount of the plain flour replaced with cornflour. They freeze well, too.

Haven't made it for years but I used to make a wholemeal shortbread using 75% wholemeal flour and semolina instead cornflour which I would roll out a little thinner than the plain flour version. That goes well with a sharp fool like gooseberry or rhubarb.

Patterson's is awful, I made the mistake of buying some once. (Plus, clotted cream??)
Love proper homemade shortbread or decent bought stuff. Not worth the calories for the other stuff!

I can’t be the only one that hates it , I do like sweet things but shortbread would never get eaten in our house

Freshly made - definitely. Shop bought, lovely if dunked into hot chocolate Blush

chattyness · 25/01/2026 13:53

I love shortbread I don't find it sweet really, it's more buttery with a hint of sweetness . I love Walkers shortbread, and even Tesco own brand is lovely, but Patterson's tastes of nothing. I haven't made it myself for years I must bake some again soon I do love homemade the best .

This is what I've got:

No, they're not good. They're very much cheap, supermarket flavour shortbread.
Lidl and Walkers are better for the same price.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 25/01/2026 13:59

I don’t like it at all. It’s just heavy, cloying and greasy. I
know one person who seems to genuinely enjoy it, so if I accidentally end up with some I pass it along. Nobody in my house likes it.

Glitterella · 25/01/2026 14:11

Nope. It’s like mixing dry cement in your mouth.

This is what I've got:

This is where you have gone wrong. Try again with some Walkers and you won't want your Biscoff again.

As an aside, would love to know which nation says they are their favourite considering the in thread consensus that they are not good.

mackers1 · 25/01/2026 14:49

It is one of the better biscuits in terms of contents and sugar. I love it for that reason alone.

WhoWhereWhatWhy · 25/01/2026 14:52

It’s one of the first things I made in a cookery lesson at school. I can still remember the recipe; 6oz sifted flour, 4oz butter, 2 oz caster sugar plus more to sprinkle on top to serve. Bring it all together to make a dough, press it into a lined sponge tin, score to divide it into sixths and prick all over. Then in the oven.

funkypurplebuddha · 25/01/2026 15:07

I really like it

tobee · 25/01/2026 15:12

I love it when it's really buttery and short. Dunked in my tea.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 25/01/2026 15:24

I love it. Biscotti is sweeter if you get decent shortbread. I buy it very rarely though but. Get through it way too quickley!

BauhausOfEliott · 25/01/2026 15:37

Biscoff and HobNobs are no less sweet than shortbread.

Toottooot · 25/01/2026 15:43

Only fae Dean’s - far superior to ony ither.

I like shortbread but rarely ever buy it as I'm not generally a biscuit fan.

I did buy some months back a box of Waitrose Colombian Coffee shortbread and pretty much ate the box in a day.

Haven't bought it since, too tempting.

Hmmm now there's a useful
post!!

(puts shoes on)

Glitterella · 25/01/2026 14:11

Nope. It’s like mixing dry cement in your mouth.

That's what happens with homemade ones if you add hash, you only make that mistake once!!

otger biscuit recipes are better 🤣

FurForksSake · 25/01/2026 15:59

@JanuaryJasmine are you offering other recipes that involve drugs? Biscuits or perhaps a cake?

familyissues12345 · 25/01/2026 16:02

It’s my absolute favourite. I wanted to make some today for Burns night but we’re all trying desperately to eating more carefully, and as I’m the only SB lover in the house I’d eat the lot which isn’t good!

Nextholspls · 25/01/2026 16:04

Waitrose Duchy shortbread is amazing…. But the down side is the packet somehow vanishes after opening!

any basic biscuit base is fine, except shortbread! Easier than cakes.

BinseyPoplars · 25/01/2026 16:11

May I put in a case for savoury shortbread? Cheesy and sometimes spicy

Not many places sell it (Waitrose had a good one over Christmas; Gail’s used to do one but I haven’t seen it for a while) but it is a lovely easy thing to make and you get the lovely buttery shortbread taste and texture without the sugar and palm oil. It’s not exactly weight-loss supportive though

Waitingfordoggo · 25/01/2026 16:26

Despite having a sweet tooth and loving butter, I don’t rate it at all and find it insipid.

BaronessBomburst · 25/01/2026 16:53

I need to know more about cheese shortbread......
