Do you like shortbread?

It's one of those foods that I never buy myself but often have it given at Christmas. I don't dislike it as such but I find it a little too sweet for my taste - that's why I prefer biscuits like HobNobs and Lotus Biscoff. Cheap shortbread is grim compared to the stuff made with clotted cream.

I always think it’s too pale and bland but I eat it anyway. Someone gave me some Fortnum and Masons macadamia shortbread last year and it was fantastic but I’m not going to buy it for myself!

Fodencat · 25/01/2026 12:30

It’s the biscuit of the Gods

TheeNotoriousPIG · 25/01/2026 12:31

Yes. It's quite possibly the most enjoyable and useful thing that I got last Christmas!

Don’t see how you can find shortbread to sweet compared to hobnobs and biscoff, I find the opposite, I’m sure they have considerably more sugar in them, not to mention palm oil.
Decent shortbread’s fantastic and so easy to make at home.

I guess it's the spiciness in Biscoff (cinnamon?) and the slight saltiness in HobNobs that I notice more.

Deans of Huntly 😋

Lovely, got several packets in Home Bargains just before Christmas- crumbly and buttery.

AgnesMcDoo · 25/01/2026 12:39

If it’s good quality - love it.

Springflowersyay · 25/01/2026 12:39

I have a very sweet tooth, but shortbread is so dull it’s not worth the calories IMO…..
I give any I am given to my husband, to put in his staff room.

I think if it’s too sweet it’s probably rubbish shortbread. It should really have a big hit of butter and a shimmer of sweetness. Sugar is a cheap ingredient so is used as filler. When I make shortbread it’s about 500g of cornflour/ butter/ flour to 100g of sugar.

I’m also aghast at the amount of sugar supermarkets stick in scones and find flavoured porridge sachets an abomination so am probably just judgy about excess sugar in general.

I agree. When I was in the US some years ago I complained about the mayo being sweet. Yes ma'am, it's mayo - it's sweet. Umm, no!

Myblueclematis · 25/01/2026 12:41

I like shortbread but rarely ever buy it as I'm not generally a biscuit fan.

I did buy some months back a box of Waitrose Colombian Coffee shortbread and pretty much ate the box in a day.

Haven't bought it since, too tempting.

This is what I've got:

This is what I've got:

Deans of Huntly far superior to Patterson's.👍😁

FluffytheGoldfish · 25/01/2026 12:48

Patterson, even the clotted cream version is poor/mediocre shortbread. I buy it because it’s on a deal and then regret it.
Definitely worth trying to make it, needs to be a mix of plain flour and semolina so it is “short” enough.

Disturbia81 · 25/01/2026 12:48

justtheotheronemrswembley · 25/01/2026 11:22

It is very sweet, and that is an advantage I suppose because unlike other biscuits, you only ever want to eat one!😁

Definitely don’t just want one 😂

FurForksSake · 25/01/2026 12:48

Clotted cream? What?!

I went down a rabbit hole and found that Patersons make one, clotted cream and rapeseed oil. Beurgh. But then Rodda’s makes one that has proper ingredients. I’d buy the latter.

Love shortbread but try to only buy it at Christmas. We do buy the mini bags from Ocado for lunch boxes as they are non upf and feel a bit more reasonable than a penguin.

FurForksSake · 25/01/2026 12:49

Paterson’s is lowest tier, even with the addition of some clotted cream.

OliviaBonas · 25/01/2026 12:54

I love shortbread. I like Walkers but my favourite is Sainsburys toffee shortbread. It’s good to dunk in tea.

MakeMineAMilkyTea · 25/01/2026 12:55

Love it, my son wants me to make it more as he adores the M&S choc chunk shortbread but I refuse to pay that much for it.

CeffylCoch · 25/01/2026 13:00

Yes but i don’t buy if often because of the amount of sugar in it

WhineAndWine1 · 25/01/2026 13:03

Hate hobnobs and lotus love m&s chocolate chip shortbread (not the bakery one but the one in the biscuit aisle

That shortbread is so good, I’ve got a couple of dupe recipes saved for it

dottiedodah · 25/01/2026 13:21

I love it! Absolute favourite for me .When DS was small used to get nice tin M and S,Shaped like a telephone box . always surprise me when people say what presents to buy on here .M and S shortbread .M and S jewellery (not earrings though) their swiss milk choccies list goes on and on!

JuniorMint14 · 25/01/2026 13:22

I like Walkers shortbread. Just has flour, butter, sugar and salt so free from upfs. Homemade is even better but often don't have the time for that.

HushTheNoise · 25/01/2026 13:25

Homemade - love it. Supermarket, less good. But for anyone into low upf Aldi/ Lidl (can't remember which) is upf free ie just butter sugar flour so in that sense it's ' healthier'.

TheTecknician · 25/01/2026 13:26

Good job I didn't buy it!

I like it but dislike HobNobs as they taste like horrifically sweet oats. The Biscoff biscuits are ok, but I wouldn't choose them, they're like toffee-flavour cat's tongues.
