Do you think a cat can truly be a horrible cat

Personally I don’t as they have no concept of anything

Yes. I’m a real cat lover, but my PILs used to have a horrible cat. Horrible looking and a nasty personality. Might allow you to stroke him but then would attack you. Everyone.

Placetobreathe · 21/01/2026 21:05

No. They might not conform to what humans want them to be but that doesn't make them inherently horrible.

Icanflyhigh · 21/01/2026 21:08

Yes.
Absolutely 100% yes!

Depends what you mean by horrible?

we had a rescue kitten who was lovely at first. Then grew up to be a right grumpy git. He tolerated us. Came home for food and a sleep in front of the fire then went off out. We all have scars from him scratching us for having the cheek to walk past him. If he saw us outside he hissed at us.

he was with us for 16 years before he became unwell. In his last few weeks he actually came to us for a stroke. He sat in my lap which was unheard of. He passed away peacefully not long afterwards.

he was a miserable beggar. But we loved him

tipsyraven · 21/01/2026 21:10

I think the cat is more likely traumatised.

TempestToo · 21/01/2026 21:14

My sister had a cat from a kitten. Nothing bad happened to her but she was just a horrible cat! Surely it’s the same as anything, not everyone can be nice!

HokiePokie · 21/01/2026 21:16

No, of course not.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/01/2026 21:17

No, a bastard cat is a thing of beauty. Independent, first, survivors are beautiful to me.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/01/2026 21:18

That was ‘fiesty’

ThatWasMyLastFatFreeFrush · 21/01/2026 21:18

We had an absolute bastard who we raised from a kitten. Hated everyone and everything. He had exactly the same upbringing as his siblings, who were perfectly nice normal cats who didn't beat the dogs up and bite small children.

How can cat or any other animal be horrible looking, they are what they are.

Aintgointogoa · 21/01/2026 21:20

Hilda, Peggy's cat in The Archers. I rest my case m'lud. 😉

Catwoman8 · 21/01/2026 21:22

I love cats, but some can be arseholes. I do believe that those cats who aren't nice probably have a reason for it, undiagnosed medical condition, trauma etc. My nan had an awful cat, you only had to look at it and it would hiss at you.

Snooks1971 · 21/01/2026 21:22

Horrible thread.

Horrible thread.

Yep.

Stickytoffeetartt · 21/01/2026 21:24

We had a complete psycho cat, she was white with a big black spot. She kung fu'd the neighbours dogs if they came near her. She hated everyone even her own kittens (just one lot and then got spayed which made her even more angry.

FancyCatSlave · 21/01/2026 21:25

No. Cats aren’t required to like people. Most do but if they choose to think all people are absolute cunts and behave accordingly that’s their prerogative.

Some people though are absolute cunts and deserve scratching. I’m always Team cat.

Aintgointogoa · 21/01/2026 21:27

I did take on a young cat who was obviously in an abusive environment (tormented by toddler, uncaring owner, she was still on the missing list when I took her as the owner never updated her chip - she kept trying to run away)
She was extremely difficult, always on the defensive and ready to swipe. However she was a very pretty little floof ball and had endearing ways at times. Not so much with me, but she did bond with my then lodger / best friend. He took all the time in the world and eventually she would acknowledge him with a head to head bump and accept his strokes....up to a point. My next long term tenant took her with her when she (the tenant) left, and she adored her ! It took a lot of time ! Then they were inseparable.
I was so happy for her. Ah, Hennie Pennie.....

CalmShaker · 21/01/2026 21:29

Yes without doubt

We had the most violent and ungrateful brute you can imagine. One-eyed (fight with another cat) bald patch and sharp teeth. Took control of certain rooms whenever it suited him, anyone in there had to leave. Headbutted the window if couldn't get in. Husband would often buy Dover sole as a treat for him and each time he just shit in his hat the next day

Gone now and sadly missed

Aintgointogoa · 21/01/2026 21:33

Here she is.....defiant as ever ❤️🌈

Do you think a cat can truly be a horrible cat
smallglassbottle · 21/01/2026 21:35

Nah, the so called horrible ones have character 😂

One of mine used to be bad tempered and somewhat unpleasant then we discovered she had a gastro intestinal problem and she felt sick and was in pain. Once she was put on to hydrolysed protein food she felt much better and became more friendly. She's still bossy, but she's fine now and likes attention.

I'd always investigate the possibility of an animal being in pain if it's behaving badly or is aggressive. It could also be due to trauma.

Oh my goodness! She really has got " attitude" hasn't she?
She looks wonderful.

CaptainCabinets · 21/01/2026 21:37

My best friends have a cat who is horrible to me Grin he lies in wait at the top of the stairs whenever I visit, won’t move and attacks me if I dare to try and walk past him. He has also launched an aerial attack on me from the top of the fridge and spits like a camel any time he walks past me.

The last time I visited, he came to the door to greet me and rubbed his head all around my shins, purring away. We all thought this might finally be the end of his hatred towards me until he sank his teeth into my ankle Grin

Still love the little bastard. I think hope he hates me because I smell like my own cats and that it’s nothing personal Blush

rockingroller · 21/01/2026 21:38

Not horrible no, but their instincts can operate in ways very inconvenient for their human friends at times; some cats more than others. I had one who used to fasten herself to my bare leg with all her claws and teeth out. It was agony. It was clear by her body language and behaviour at other times that hse loved me a lot but something triggered that response at times, and bloody hell it was bad.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 21/01/2026 21:38

Yes same goes for most animals including people!
