Do you think a cat can truly be a horrible cat

Personally I don’t as they have no concept of anything

Yes. I have 4 cats and one of them is truly mean. She bit my head the other night in bed for no reason. She’s hurt the other cats, deliberately not eaten her dinner then come back later when the other cats have started eating it and attacked them. Just a piece of work. My husband loves her

Ours is a total bastard

We all worship him

Poshsmith · 21/01/2026 23:27

My dad’s cat is a thug, I swear she brings a shiv into the prison shower. She walks in like she owns the room and hits out at you if you pet her. She is not intimidated by dogs. But she is a total character, not everyone cares for her attitude but I see this sentient being who lives life on her terms and doesn’t apologize for it. My dad is very fond of her.

Yes, I have one in my neighbourhood. In the last year or so it has started coming to my garden and tormenting my cat. There are lots of other cats around and my cat has had “differences of options with them “ but that creature is something else all together.
He viciously attacked her a couple of times and caused nasty wounds. At the moment she has an injured paw from the last attack.
If I have my back door open, I have to watch out for him or he will come inside and spray. He keeps spraying my front door, the car, the bins. I have seen him viciously attack the neighbour’s cat as well.
Never thought I could hate an animal but I absolutely detest that cat.

See I would think they are really a sad cat and try to fix them 😂

Me too! Every time we visited I thought this. Usually cats like me - but I couldn’t get anywhere with this one. He was a rescue cat and I suspect that he had been badly treated before my PILs got him. (Incidentally he behaved the same way with them, which was sad)

BlossomingSlowly · 22/01/2026 09:01

No. They’ve no reason to be. And no moral compass. All of their behaviour has a purpose or a meaning. Cats that are really aggressively behaved are usually in pain/have a medical condition that isn’t managed or are extremely anxious for whatever reason. Same with dogs. The amount of “aggressive” dogs I’ve worked with that actually have severe underlying pain that has gone unnoticed is mad

I think some cats have been treated badly and traumatised, and some might be in pain but on the whole cats are gorgeous, independent, loving and worth making the extra effort for.

My favourite ever cat (and I've rarely not had a pet for 65 years) was a cat who was down right nasty.

if a visitor came to the house, unlike other cats I've had, she'd run towards them. If they were cat lovers (and didn't know her) they'd reach down to stroke her. She'd then sink her claws in as hard as she could.

With me, she'd jump into my lap to be stroked. Instead of jumping off when she'd had enough, she'd bite my hand instead.

even her vet advised me to keep her away from people.

why did I love her? Goodness knows. She made me laugh, she was so very much her own cat. Didn't take any of what she thought was nonsense. While she as in her later years, I also had a staffy/Rhodesia Ridgeback cross dog. The dog looked like a brute of a thing but was such an obedient dog. Dog would not go near cat.

I guess the heart wants w hat the heart wants. In my case it seems I wanted a deranged psychotic animal.

In my early 20s I lodged with a teacher that had an Italian rescue cat that I swear had been part of the mafia - he would swagger around and casually bite anything in range. If he could have dragged in a horse’s head then I’m sure he’d have left it on my pillow.

She (the teacher) also used to take in the school bunny for the summer - and that thing was an ankle biting menace too.

😅😅

This thread is hilarious in parts, sad in others.

Our cat definitely has quirks. We adopted him when he was 3, and he's been with us 3 years. He is an amputee, and we don't know what really happened to him when he was young, other than he suffered two broken legs one of which didn't heal properly and left him in pain, hence the amputation shortly before we adopted him.

However, he really hates me doing yoga. It seems to make him irrationally furious. I get onto the mat and he takes a run at me, often biting me and, once, really hard on the bottom 🙄 He has to either be put in the kitchen when I'm doing yoga or DH will sit with him.

I love him to bits, but he's definitely quirky. Away from the yoga mat he's also cuddly and very affectionate and will often sleep all evening on my lap.
