Do you think a cat can truly be a horrible cat

Personally I don’t as they have no concept of anything

Here she is.....defiant as ever ❤️🌈

Cattitude!

Aintgointogoa · 21/01/2026 21:43

@placetobreathe she did ! Never a dull moment. When the bathroom was being redone she disappeared. I was about to print out missing posters when my lodger said he could hear scratching under his floor (adjacent to bathroom) Sure enough 3 days later, with a bowl of food near the missing floor boards, a Miss Haversham type apparition of a cat appeared.....I had to throw a towel over her before she could escape down the burrow again !

Oh these have made me laugh , our cat is feisty and predictable with his nastiness . He lies in wait on the landing then pounces at people's ankles grabs them with his claws then sinks his teeth in . If you attempt to stroke him on about the 3rd stroke you get a clout , he swipes the dog across the face for no reason . He went into the neighbours house lay on the daughters bed for an hour all cosied up with her then he walked downstairs jumped on their sofa bit the dad who was relaxing watching TV then marched to their front door meowing loudly .

Yes without doubt

We had the most violent and ungrateful brute you can imagine. One-eyed (fight with another cat) bald patch and sharp teeth. Took control of certain rooms whenever it suited him, anyone in there had to leave. Headbutted the window if couldn't get in. Husband would often buy Dover sole as a treat for him and each time he just shit in his hat the next day

Gone now and sadly missed

lol I shouldn’t laugh but lol

AcidicTrifle · 21/01/2026 21:47

Yes. Our cat was a horrible cat when we got her. We had her from kitten hood so no trauma, she was just a dick. She used to arch her back and constantly menace us for literally up to an hour until she eventually would attack us. We showed a video to the vet who said “well that’s bloody weird” and had never seen anything like it.

We moved house and she just chilled out instantly. Absolutely no logical reason for a change. Still not a lap cat but a nice cat. But if we’d stayed in the old house she’d have remained a horrible cat.

wonderstuff · 21/01/2026 21:48

The cat I had before I had children was an arsehole, she got very upset if she wasn’t getting my attention. If we went away overnight she would relieve herself either in my bed or laundry basket. When my children arrived she got very upset and would wee all over the house. She lived to 19 as well.

On reflection we were probably a bad match for her, we moved house quite a bit and she took months to settle every time. She’d have been better suited to someone more settled. We didn’t feel we could rehome her as her behaviour was so bad. She did like me most of the time and was a good lap cat.

We got her as a kitten with her brother, he was in an accident and away from her for a few weeks, when he came back she took against him and used to bite the leg he’d injured.

ContentedAlpaca · 21/01/2026 21:50

We have a cat that absolutely adores the children in the family. On the rare occasion I can get near her without her running away, she'll sniff me then wrinkle her nose and back off as if I'm the most disgusting thing ever.

Still, she's very cute and we all love her.

YeOldeGreyhound · 21/01/2026 21:51

There is a cat who visits my garden who is horrible. If you pass, he will launch at you. Hissing with claws out. He has chased my own dog out of her own garden.

My ex had 3 cats, and one was pretty loving but on his terms. Some days he was the perfect lap cat. Sometimes he would swipe you if you walked past. Same with the other cats too. He would just randomly attack them.

I have known some horrible dogs too, but they have been bonded to their owner or only a couple of other people, and hate everyone else. They tend to be chihuahuas.

Butterflymoth · 21/01/2026 21:51

No. I think sometimes they don’t conform to what we want and/or expect from a pet. That’s the risk you take when you have one. Same as anything really, might not work out the way you pictured it! But they depend on us for care and love and they all deserve that no matter what they are like or what form that takes; for some it might mean generally leaving them alone, for some it might mean lots of strokes and cuddles and it’s up to us to learn what our cat needs and provide it to the best of our ability.

Pieceofpurplesky · 21/01/2026 21:54

My old cat was lovely but used to always attack and bite my ex mil. I think she sensed my dislike and did what I couldn't.

Current cat is gorgeous when she wants to be but will NOT tolerate anything she does not want and will swipe accordingly.

wonderstuff · 21/01/2026 21:54

I’ve got a lovely cat at the moment, however he does this thing most mornings where he comes upstairs and wants to go downstairs with me, but then runs in front of me on the stairs and it feels like he’s trying to take me out. He also chases his tail on the second stair, falls down, the returns to the second stair and does it again. So I don’t think he’s trying to kill me, I think he’s just not too bright.

No, a bastard cat is a thing of beauty. Independent, first, survivors are beautiful to me.

My cats nickname was bastard cat. He was wonderful and Ioved him. Miss him a lot. But he was also a bastard at times.

OSTMusTisNT · 21/01/2026 21:59

I've had older rescue cat x1, tamed feral kittens x4 and 1x Pedigree from a breeder.

None have been horrible 😻.

My sister however has a horrible grumpy cat, pretty much hates all humans. Would think he was a total feral but he's not!

Had two at different times born of feral mothers. Magnificent hunters but very antisocial. I admire them and when they occasionally deigned to join me on the sofa very privileged.

gettingreadyforChristmas · 21/01/2026 22:09

I had a cat as a child we got at maybe 6 weeks old. At about 5 years old he changed he would be very dominant nipping you in the morning if I was first up and in the kitchen making breakfast. I would lock him in the laundry until my Father came downstairs. He liked being stroked, but started doing this thing where he would lie on your legs to be stroked, start purring, then 10 mins later would suddenly lash out at you at draw blood. He would do this to friends I had visiting too. Looking back I think he possibly had dementia. I left home before he passed away, but he lived to a good old age. His aggression worsening. He used to steal the poor cats next door food as well. Funny old things, I am more of a dog person.

LydiaBucket · 21/01/2026 22:09

Ours is a twat who attacks us and hates affection but he’s a rescue and I’ve no idea what he’s been through prior to coming to us so we tolerate him!

Middlemarch123 · 21/01/2026 22:09

This is why I love cats.
They tolerate us. They are superior, and they let us now if we don’t meet their expectations.
I’ve had more than twenty over my life; all individuals. Some have been feral, but ended up as loving lap cats. Some have dossed here, accepting tuna, chicken as their god given right, with a disdainful look, if I’m lucky. I currently have four, Chairman Meow, my Persian, who follows me everywhere, and demands being centre of attention at all times, he tolerates a couple of friends, as long as they admire him from a distance. He likes DS, puts up with adult DDs who visit, but dislikes one son in law, and hisses at him. Two siblings, a gorgeous black and white girl, who is a dream, laid back, loves cuddles. Her sister is black, gorgeous too, but has catitude. Currently we have been adopted by a stray, who lives in our conservatory overnight. Been squatting for 2 years, he’s cute, but bossy. We feed him, provide him with a basket and blanket, he left a mouse to say thank you yesterday. I can’t imagine a home without cats.

Om83 · 21/01/2026 22:22

My cat was lovely for 16 years until seemingly overnight turned horrible and scratched us every opportunity. Took us a while to realise it was because she was sick and most likely in a lot of pain…

Dollymylove · 21/01/2026 22:24

I was given a kitten who i think must have been semi feral (he came from a farm)
He was quite a combative animal, he liked the outdoors, loved my DP but nobody else.
He loved a fight and ended up at the vets on more than one occasion with abscesses from fighting. Our large dog was terrified of him. The vets would only treat him if he waa under sedation. He often used to disappear for a few days then just turn up again as if nothing had happened. He somehow managed to live quite a long life, and despite being the most vicious cat i have ever come across, I cried buckets when he passed away 😢

Hallowbeflashed · 21/01/2026 22:26

Yes, my neighbour has a cat that I look after when they go away. That thing intentionally pisses everywhere when it’s pissed off that it’s been ‘abandoned’.

Driftingawaynow · 21/01/2026 22:26

I used to know a cat who was so malevolent the air would go cold when he entered the room. He was a legend

upstairsdownstairscardboardbox · 21/01/2026 22:30

Yes. I grew up on a farm and we had many cats, all lovely, even the big Tom cats, all except Sammy. She was a tyrant. Absolutely horrible, scratched and mauled everyone then ran away for 6 months only to return when she'd been shot with an air rifle. She was taken to the vet cared for until she made a miraculous recovery. Unfortunately she abruptly went from helpless and grateful to an utter nightmare and decided to live in the shed and hiss at every human she saw for the next 11 years only coming near the house for her food. She hated other cats too. And every other living creature.

BIWI · 21/01/2026 21:03

Yes. I’m a real cat lover, but my PILs used to have a horrible cat. Horrible looking and a nasty personality. Might allow you to stroke him but then would attack you. Everyone.

See I would think they are really a sad cat and try to fix them 😂

SabrinaThwaite · 21/01/2026 22:40

In my early 20s I lodged with a teacher that had an Italian rescue cat that I swear had been part of the mafia - he would swagger around and casually bite anything in range. If he could have dragged in a horse’s head then I’m sure he’d have left it on my pillow.

She (the teacher) also used to take in the school bunny for the summer - and that thing was an ankle biting menace too.
