What would make a man a failure in life? What’s your opinion?

Would it be someone in a low skilled job all their life? Never married or had kids? Also would it be someone with no friends and no hobbies? Or perhaps still living at home with their parents?

What is your thoughts?

OP posts:
olderbutwiser · 12/01/2026 16:11

Someone who threw away all their opportunities in life.

GettingFestiveNow · 12/01/2026 16:12

Being a massive misogynist

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 12/01/2026 16:12

An absent father / bare minimum father.

Puppalicious · 12/01/2026 16:12

Being an incel.

Upstartled · 12/01/2026 16:13

I don't think people fail at life. Some people live lives that I wouldn't find appealling or attractive - but you'd have to be a full blown arsehole to rate people's lives by some artificial criteria of success.

zipadeeday · 12/01/2026 16:13

A man who couldn't provide a non working wife and 2 kids with a reasonable standard of living.

Bit of an old-fashioned view. Why is it the man's responsibility?

That is ridiculous these days - the cost of living means most families need two working parents.

PennyLaneisinmyheartandmysoul · 12/01/2026 16:15

Being shallow and judging someone for their employment choices.
Expecting to be a cocklodger and not an equal partner..

This.

The only possible context for failure is failing to attain what an individual considers "success", and no human being fails life just because they don't qualify for what someone else considers success.

People make different choices, as they are perfectly entitled to, and they aren't "failing" just because those choices differ to the ones you, or anyone else would have made.

corlan · 12/01/2026 16:17

A man that didn't bother to be a father to his children - and that can include men that live in the same house as their kids.

Someone who is not a kind, loving and caring person. The rest is just froth on the coffee of life.

HeadyLamarr · 12/01/2026 16:18

Someone who avoided his responsibilities to his family and to a lesser extent, his community.

Redrosesposies · 12/01/2026 16:18

Most of the 'partners' on posts on Mumsnet fall into this category IMO.

UltimateSloth · 12/01/2026 16:19

Having a load of kids he doesn't see.

BillieWiper · 12/01/2026 16:19

Someone who disrespects and abuses other people.
Someone who has no interest in learning or the world around them.
Someone who thinks their opinion is right and won't listen to others points of view.
Someone who expressed anger using violence.
Someone who finds other people's misfortune gratifying.
Someone who doesn't believe the rules apply to them.
Someone who thinks they can take whatever they want, no matter what harm it may cause.
Someone who is comfortable constantly telling lies.
Someone who has no sympathy or empathy for animals or humans.

JustTalkToThem · 12/01/2026 16:20

a man who became president twice and spread hate and violence...

Tell us your opinion on this OP.

Why do you ask?

PermanentTemporary · 12/01/2026 16:22

I don’t really go for labelling people as failures for anything.

I do find men who can’t look after themselves (minimally decent nutrition, sober, clean body and clothes (including managed feet and toenails), reasonably clean living space including pleasant toilet) going to doctor/dentist as needed, some sort of earning or meaningful employment, paid or unpaid) very tiresome these days. But even if someone doesn’t do these things I wouldn’t necessarily say they’d failed. Perhaps those guys who seem to be chronically unable to find anything enjoyable in what in most cases in the UK is a life that only kings would have led in the past? Can’t stand relentless negativity.

TY78910 · 12/01/2026 16:22

How can we make such a sweeping statement? I don’t think I could even say that a homeless man was a “failure” - you don’t know what happened along the way. You could have a man who pushes trollies in a supermarket but goes home and cooks his wife a meal and takes his kids to judo but no assets under his name. Equally you could have a drug dealer dead beat dad who owns three apartments in the middle of London. Success and fulfilment is only what you make it and it’s personal to everybody.

Nugg · 12/01/2026 16:23

Someone who couldn’t contribute to life, financially and emotionally. Including absent fathers

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 12/01/2026 16:24

Laziness.
I don’t care what you do for a living as long as you work hard.
Similarly do you work hard at home to split the load and look after your significant other and family.

noidea69 · 12/01/2026 16:24

What would make a woman a failure in life ?

paddleboardingmum · 12/01/2026 16:24

A criminal. Someone who doesn't see his kids. A domestic abuser.

bombastix · 12/01/2026 16:24

A bully of women and children
