Try and Google it ...

I don't know what you mean Jane? The petition got a debate in WH and that was it? Am I missing something? I assume you mean this one? Apologies if I am not understanding you.

yes, either the media will get overexcited about a leadership rival. Or they will call Burnham frit and suggest Starmer strongarmed him.

Plenty of lazy copy.
And absolutely no need to focus on policy assessments or anything technical (or actually relevant to how the country functions)

I know an ex Express copy writer and they are incredibly lazy.

Just ask here how many people knew it existed let alone what happened to it ...

Sir Sadiq Khan has also backed a return to Parliament for Andy Burnham reportedly.

PandoraSocks · 24/01/2026 16:07

This is what Khan has said.

"I think if Andy Burnham wants to be a member of Parliament, Andy Burnham should be allowed to be a member of Parliament"

"I'm a firm believer in the best team having all the talent playing for them, and if Andy wants to return to Parliament, I will try and make some time between now and the by-election to knock on some doors for him, or whoever the candidate is."

PandoraSocks · 24/01/2026 16:10

⏰️ Come on Burnham, if you're going to run, announce it!

Bit anodyne, really. Just enough so that (a) were Burnham to stand for election and (b) win and (c) then become Labour leader/PM , Khan can claim credit.

And if he doesn't, it wasn't Khans fault.

Fuck me, everyday politicking. Who thought we'd actually welcome it back ???????

Sadly, I think you are right.

Yes, same as Powell's statement.:

"He has got to make up his own mind what he wants to do and he has got until five o'clock today.

"Andy Burnham is incredibly popular in my part of the world. He is an incredibly popular politician because he is really changing our city for the better."

She added: "So, it should be up to Andy and the local members who will select their candidate, and our members are very discerning."

Interesting viewpoints about the Tory party in that video. I think they will back away from America, aided and abetted by Trump's racism. I can't see Badenoch getting on with him or Vance.

Assuming they have a grown up somewhere at CCHQ (maybe locked in the attic) they will have cottoned on that these are uncharted and potentially lethat waters.

This issue could make a "pro US" party unelectable.

I am hoping that if Reforms plateau continues then Musk and co will wade in and call the UK right wingers a bunch of pussies like our troops and really make life unsafe for Farage in Clacton.

I thought Badenoch was quite cosy with Vance? She defended his comments on the UK military

Appears that Rayner has played her hand well - essentially, she is signalling that there should be a contest, and if the Starmerites now block Burnham there’ll be civil war, which would legitimise a challenge.

This is a perilous moment for Starmer - he is hugely unpopular and with Labour polling 17%, a vast swathe of backbenchers can see themselves losing their seats.

For Burnham, Rayner’s support adds to his risk - if he doesn’t run, he looks weak and she looks magnanimous, but he could easily lose and then she looks even stronger as the candidate to run against Starmer.

SerendipityJane · 24/01/2026 17:00

Starmerites

Is there such a thing ?

Or, let's put it another way: It wasn't Keir Starmer that made me vote Labour. It was the furious desire to ensure the Tories and Reform were nowhere near the levers of power.

If I don't want to walk I don't care what fuel the car runs on.

PandoraSocks · 24/01/2026 17:03

Starmerites is a favoured phrase on a certain thread, and it isn't meant as a compliment. Odd to see it used here.

Lalgarh · 24/01/2026 17:05

Well it's 5pm.

He's not said anything.

I have today written to the Chair of Labour’s National Executive Committee seeking permission to enter the selection process for a candidate for the forthcoming Gorton and Denton by-election.

According to the Telegraph he is.

Well, that's it. They need to let him stand. I think it is a bit shit for the people of Manchester, though.
