Asking if royal-related gift would be good when coming to the UK?

I have recently moved to England to be with my British boyfriend from Spain.

What would be the best way, in your opinion, to ingratiate myself with my new British neighbours or with my husband’s British family?

It is well-known that the British love their royals so should I get some pictures of the late Queen Elizabeth (as I know she was adored by the British) or maybe Princess Diana and put them on some cupcakes as a gift? Do you think they’d appreciate this?

I haven’t talked much to my boyfriend about his opinions on politics or royalty but I thought it was only natural as a Brit he’d love them like different country’s have their icons.

Or, would it be more appropriate if I bought a frame with a picture of the late Queen Elizabeth like I’ve seen some British people have in their houses as an arrival gift? Maybe, one with the Late Queen and her corgis or one of her from her younger years since it’d be more sentimental to a British person?

Wind up.

minipie · 08/01/2026 14:59

I think you’re underestimating it OP

Best to turn up in a tailored lemon yellow suit, matching hat and handbag and 1” heels, with a Union Jack cape and singing God Save The Queen. With a corgi under each arm.

Allseeingallknowing · 08/01/2026 14:59

How about a copy of “And what do you do?” By Norman Baker. That’s about the royals and should go down well!
Or a framed photo of Andrew Mountbatten - Windsor!

Get them something Spanish. People don’t tend to want gifts about their own culture from a person not within that culture.

Purlant · 08/01/2026 15:12

Every decent British person has a tattoo of either QE2 or Queen Victoria on their left buttock. If you really are committed, I would get that done asap so it can heal in time for the great unveiling on the first meeting.

LostThestral · 08/01/2026 15:21

you should definitely do the framed picture - a nice family picture of the late Queen with her favourite son Andrew would go down a storm

Wind up.

Surely not

Or these?

That’s not Princess Diana.

That’s Clare Balding with a full face of makeup.

Tryagain26 · 08/01/2026 15:27

Please don't buy a royal souvenir. The British don't like the Royal family as much as you might think. Many would prefer not to have one at all and even those who like them wouldn't thank you for royal memorabilia.
Much much nicer would be a gift from Spain which I think most people would appreciate more

Allseeingallknowing · 08/01/2026 15:30

Yes, some lovely Spanish soap, embroidered cloths, or sweets.

Samiloff · 08/01/2026 15:31

I assume you’re joking.

Alicorn1707 · 08/01/2026 15:35

@romes412

Are you one of the deluded? 😆

UK
Recent polls from late 2024 and late 2025 show that between 48% and 65% of people in the UK support the continuation of the monarchy

Spain
The most recent polls show support for "monarchists" ranging between approximately 42.4% and 58.6%

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 08/01/2026 15:39

The only thing us Brits love more than the lovely royal family is the bloody gore of a good bullfight. What I would suggest, OP, is that you find some framed pictures of bulls being stabbed to death as a public spectacle. It would make a great, and welcome, gift for any British person! You should also come along in full flamenco outfit, we would expect nothing less.

You again, OP?

Clearly a fruitcake.

Raisondeetre · 08/01/2026 15:46

Clearly a fruitcake.

A fruitcake with a naice picture transfer of The Late Queen on its Royal icing. no less Grin

As an aside, I think it’s brilliant how you have avoided talking to your boyfriend about politics. It’s best not to know how each other feels about that kind of thing. Same with ethics, substance abuse, crime, religion, future plans. Definitely avoid especially if you are moving to a different country to live with them

canuckup · 08/01/2026 16:19

😂 good one op

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 08/01/2026 16:23

Spanish wine or cava

goldtrap · 08/01/2026 16:26

I should imagine they will have plenty of pictures of our dear late Queen - and her cute corgis - in their Royal Shrine. However, if you really want to surprise and delight, may I suggest a few portraits of her royal loveliness Princess the wonderous Meghan Markle? Us Brits are cock-a-hoop for her and her elegant ways. We honestly can't get enough.

Boomer55 · 08/01/2026 16:30

No. My English son is married to an American lass, and they, and friends rock over here en masse once a year.

They love our history, but laugh at all our forelock tugging with the royals .

Stick to history, if anything.

Santangelo · 08/01/2026 16:37

Please don’t give up your Spanish heritage once you move here.

Ask everyone you meet how to pronounce ‘Cucumber’.

Offer to teach your neighbours how to dance the Flamenco and if you venture into the British countryside take a red cape to swirl around in front of any Bulls standing around looking bored in a field.

doglover90 · 08/01/2026 16:45

This is clearly a spoof thread 😂

But I’m totally serious about Victoria Wood.
