Asking if royal-related gift would be good when coming to the UK?

I have recently moved to England to be with my British boyfriend from Spain.

What would be the best way, in your opinion, to ingratiate myself with my new British neighbours or with my husband’s British family?

It is well-known that the British love their royals so should I get some pictures of the late Queen Elizabeth (as I know she was adored by the British) or maybe Princess Diana and put them on some cupcakes as a gift? Do you think they’d appreciate this?

I haven’t talked much to my boyfriend about his opinions on politics or royalty but I thought it was only natural as a Brit he’d love them like different country’s have their icons.

Or, would it be more appropriate if I bought a frame with a picture of the late Queen Elizabeth like I’ve seen some British people have in their houses as an arrival gift? Maybe, one with the Late Queen and her corgis or one of her from her younger years since it’d be more sentimental to a British person?

This, do this. Women's Weekly is still going (I've just checked), so you could act it out too. For the most kudos, source a second hand hostess trolley.

So is Gardeners Question Time, so make sure to tune in at the start for full dramatic effect.

I recon there will be some nice Andy and Fergie wedding tea-towels going cheap... lovely present.

I’m in the office today & have to go to a meeting in a few mins. This is NOT the time to be singing ‘Let’s do it’ under my breath.

Just in case this OP isn't a spoof:

When you buy gifts for your Spanish family, OP, do you get little plastic matadors wearing flamenco dresses and sombreros? No? You don't?! Would this be because these would be the tackiest possible rendering of an ignorant outsider's view of what being Spanish is all about? Ditto Royal tat.

MyThreeWords · 08/01/2026 14:07

GalaxyJam · 08/01/2026 12:26

I don’t know why people are being so negative OP, I’d love a cake with the face of our Dear Departed Queen on! In fact, could you go one better and actually make them a cake in the shape of a bust of the Queen? Something like this?

Bagsie me the nose. Always the tastiest bit of a monarch.

Actnaturally · 08/01/2026 14:10

The correct etiquette would be to bring something from your home country. I know all Spanish people love flamenco, bullfighting and paella, so bring some prawn flavoured cupcakes with bulls faces on them and serve whilst dressed in your flamenco costume.

Is OP a troll or just someone who regularly posts batshit threads about buying royal paraphernalia for people?

Both.

OP you’re getting a hard time on here. Yes, tea towels of QE2 and the corgis, a mug each for boyfriend’s parents, a collection of mini union jacks and a teapot of Buck House are the absolute minimum expected.

Do also look up the meaning of the verb “to ingratiate”.

Oh god no. Please dont do that most Brits would be laughing at that. I'm a Brit living in Spain so you in reverse. I think a nice Spanish treat, a lovely Spanish wine or nice olive oil would be the way to go.

A framed picture of Victoria Wood would be better. If you can sing, you could even serenade them with The Ballad of Barry & Freda.

Oh yes, slap me on the bottom with a woman's weekly!

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/01/2026 14:18

Don't do it they would prefer something Spanish.

beAsensible1 · 08/01/2026 14:23

Do you have a picture of the king of Spain?

Would that be something you would give to Spanish parents?

Just be your normal nice self, have you beer met them yet? Even though you’re moving to be with him, I’d assume you’d have met them before moving here.

Just bring them a bunch of flowers if you’re desperate for something. Or invite them over and cook a Spanish meal.

do not get them a picture of any royals. 😂😂 though that would be an enduring family joke so that’s something I guess

imagine turning up with a picture of Camilla. Hilarious

Even the statue 😁

48percenttoday · 08/01/2026 14:27

Are you the same poster who asked whether Brits have a framed photo of the King in their homes? 😂

Branleuse · 08/01/2026 14:29

I think that you should bring them something quintessentially Spanish, such as cupcakes with images of Franco on them, or bullfighting merchandise

OriginalUsername2 · 08/01/2026 14:32

You have to be joking 😂

Beat me on the bottom. Victoria liked a nice bit of alliteration.

Ah now, that's a bit cheap. The OP should provide each neighbour and each member of her boyfriend's family with their own personal live corgi.

Or an actual bull each? I mean, let's do this thing properly. It's really important that the OP represents her country in the best possible light.

I cant cope🤣🤣🤣🤣

YYYDlilah · 08/01/2026 14:39

A portrait of Queen Elizabeth's favourite son and one of her favourite grandson and his bride on their wedding day would be perfect.
