Asking if royal-related gift would be good when coming to the UK?

I have recently moved to England to be with my British boyfriend from Spain.

What would be the best way, in your opinion, to ingratiate myself with my new British neighbours or with my husband’s British family?

It is well-known that the British love their royals so should I get some pictures of the late Queen Elizabeth (as I know she was adored by the British) or maybe Princess Diana and put them on some cupcakes as a gift? Do you think they’d appreciate this?

I haven’t talked much to my boyfriend about his opinions on politics or royalty but I thought it was only natural as a Brit he’d love them like different country’s have their icons.

Or, would it be more appropriate if I bought a frame with a picture of the late Queen Elizabeth like I’ve seen some British people have in their houses as an arrival gift? Maybe, one with the Late Queen and her corgis or one of her from her younger years since it’d be more sentimental to a British person?

Yes, I think a picture of the late Queen and some Princess Diana memorial cupcakes would be a great gift 👍

A framed picture of Victoria Wood would be better. If you can sing, you could even serenade them with The Ballad of Barry & Freda.

This, do this. Women's Weekly is still going (I've just checked), so you could act it out too. For the most kudos, source a second hand hostess trolley.

I don’t know why people are being so negative OP, I’d love a cake with the face of our Dear Departed Queen on! In fact, could you go one better and actually make them a cake in the shape of a bust of the Queen? Something like this?

That’s creepy.

RaininSummer · 08/01/2026 12:27

Definitely not unless it's a joke. Take some lovely Spanish treats to them as a gift.

Tighteningmybelt · 08/01/2026 12:28

Yes please do this and record their reaction and post it here Brew

British people hate their neighbours so they won’t want any gifts, Royal or not. Bah humbug.

GalaxyJam · 08/01/2026 12:36

Or if baking isn’t your thing, maybe something like this?

TheBlueKoala · 08/01/2026 12:50

Get them some "for ever" jam- I'm sure they'll appreciate it.

ginasevern · 08/01/2026 12:55

I must congratulate you on your English OP. It's almost as if it's your native tongue.

Lucky you - you're arriving just before our traditional British feast of Bollockmas (20th January), where each street makes a life-size effigy of a Royal figure out of cake. Then we ritually carve them up with large knives and share them out with our neighbours!

Your boyfriend's family and neighbours will take it as a graceful compliment if you supply the cake effigy for them this year. It can be any figure you like, going back to William the Conqueror. Please make it as realistic as possible.

One caveat: carving up effigies of the Royal children is frowned upon. This is partly for reasons of good taste, and partly because there may not be enough cake in them to go round. (If it's a large neighbourhood, then Henry VIII is a popular choice, for similar reasons.)

murasaki · 08/01/2026 13:07

What about an Andrew formerly known as Prince cake, they're bound to adore that.

Why would it be? She is getting on with her life very nicely, from the looks of it.
