1 avocado, 5 pears, 4 nectarines and a small bag of chestnuts? 80miles from London, not organic, from an independent fruit/veg shop in our village.

What did this cost?

£12? I think the chestnuts will have pushed the total up.

Good pears or the ones you get in schools which look like pears but are actually rocks?

Hmm, chestnuts and nectarines are out of season so will be expensive, avocados are always expensive, pears less so so I'd say £14.

£5 for a good avocado? Are you a Tory MP?

😂 no. But I have seen them priced £3+ at independent shops and I’ve assumed a boujis independent shop that might have bigger overhead costs to have ripe stuff sent somewhere not near a city and that there might not be anywhere else nearby to get the same stuff.

If it was a London corner shop I’d say a lot less.

Hoolahoophop · 08/01/2026 13:37

Independent fruit/veg shop in our village, if you buy in season locally grown its cheaper and better quality than anything you can buy in the supermarket....but that little lot not being picked in the snowy fields at the moment would easily set you bake £13

parkezvous · 08/01/2026 13:37

£16

Actually no idea.

FieldOfBeans · 08/01/2026 13:40

£12ish at a supermarket so £15ish at an independent shop?
