1 avocado, 5 pears, 4 nectarines and a small bag of chestnuts? 80miles from London, not organic, from an independent fruit/veg shop in our village.

What did this cost?

Thanks everyone. It was DH that bought the box. I assumed £10 but it was £15.

He shouldn't be buying so much imported fruit then! 😁

Its also why its normally ME that does the shopping. We've had pears from there before which were really delicious. No idea why he bought chestnuts and nectarines but there you go. 🤷‍♀️

Can you give us a breakdown of what each item cost?

Mt563 · 08/01/2026 14:55

Ouch. My veg box is £13 and thay sometimes feels pricey but I get way more than this!

Bjorkdidit · 08/01/2026 14:59

So why did he buy it all and what's he planning on doing with it?

All looks nice but hard to tell from a photo whether ripe etc.

That like £1 per fruit and £5 for the chestnuts. Expensive! But some of them are out of season. I once went a village farm shop and got 2 sweet potatoes, 4 peaches, and some asparagus and it was over £15 I felt sick. Not organic or anything.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 08/01/2026 15:38

I reckon that’s about £8 in Aldi . £12-15 independent place. There is a place near me that sells pretty / organic veg but it’s about £7 for a kilo of carrots!

I wish I could, but DH bought them and didn't get a receipt.

So why did he buy it all and what's he planning on doing with it?

-Pear tarte tatin
-Guacomole to have with fajitas tomorrow night
-Chestnuts to roast and nibble on

-Nectarines. No idea, I assume just to eat. I had a very disappointing, crunchy, sour nectarine last year that he clearly remembered and he thought these would be nicer (yes, out of season I know!)

Have you actually read the OP's post?

Yes.

Surely fancy shops have waste too

Next time he wants chestnuts, send him down the park/woods to gather them for free. Sweet chestnuts are native to the UK.

I know. It was very random. The last time we had fresh chestnuts was 20yrs ago. I've come in and he's got them in the oven already!

I am never living in the UK going on some of the guesses. I shop in Aldi in Ireland and that lot would cost about 5 euro.

You’re not serious ? I’m in Dublin and even Aldi would we way more than 5 pounds . Ireland is OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive for food !!

I didnt say it was the same quality just to note. I was looking on condrens website but while they have pears and avocado cheap enough they didnt have the nectarines so could not compare.
