Things that sound nice but actually aren't

I'm putting forward Fruit teas.
Some of the combinations sound so promising and positively delicious.

In reality, they taste what I imagine drinking pot pourri to be like.

I agree with so many of these.

I’ll add - garden centre cake. Always looks amazing, but is always an over sweet disappointment (and I’m a cake fan with a sweet tooth).

BBQs. They sound so spontaneous and fun. But mysteriously create a load of work and clearing up. All to eat something charred balanced on your knee - or worse standing up - being attack by a wasp

Nights out on the town.
Queuing for exorbitant drinks, nowhere to sit, shit music, sweating, milling about, can't make out what anyone is saying, hanging on to your bag, your drink and your coat while trying to maintain a conversation and seem like you're enjoying yourself.
Then it's, "shall we move on to somewhere else?", just for some more of the same in a different pub.

Nights in with your friends are so much more satisfying.

And chips, smell great but usually disappoint

V jealous of those that don’t like wine and cake! You must be tiny!

HugglesAndSnuggles · 31/12/2025 08:47

Agree totally with fruit tea. I really want to like it but it’s a big fat nope from me.

A flat white coffee sounds like it should be lovely but nope 👎

Possibly controversial with any Disney fans but I didn’t get the hype with the Mickey beignets.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 31/12/2025 08:54

Cheesecake. Neither cheese nor cake. Just a sickly, biscuity splat.
Profiteroles. Chewy cream-filled devils eyeballs.
Sour dough bread. Such a frickin' effort involved with the chewing. Like eating cork tablemats.
Agree fruit teas. They promise so much but just taste like the hot orange squash I was forced to drink every time I had a cold as a kid.
Cheese boards. Now, I like cheese but here lies the danger of eating way, way too much cheese and then hating cheese afterwards. Why risk it?

Any flavoured coffee, it's just sweet syrup being added. Horrid if you don't take sugar.
Crisps - the crunch is great, the flavour awful (greasy, even pringles) and the worst: the bits that go soggy and stick in your teeth.

3 day city break get-away. Sounds glam to jet off to say New York for the weekend but in reality I'm sure the hassle of travelling and then trying to cram all activities into a day and a half must be stressful and exhausting.

Followthatpath · 31/12/2025 09:06

If I think about it too hard, I find the concept of cheese weird & not as nice as it should be. Here, have a lump or six of milk soured with the juices of a cow’s stomach!

Was about to say this, too! Add jet lag, too.

silkypyjamas · 31/12/2025 09:08

Coconut milk

footballmum · 31/12/2025 09:10

Chip shop fish & chips. Love the idea of a chippy tea but they are always soggy by the time I get them home (I only live just round the corner!) Much prefer them in a restaurant where the batter is still nice and crispy.

zigazigaaaing · 31/12/2025 09:11

Macdonalds
Any coffees with syrups added to them

Tiedbutchorestodo · 31/12/2025 09:13

sunbathing by the pool / on the beach - I actually find it makes me feel a bit stressed - I feel like I’m wasting holiday time and I don’t think I quite know how to just relax.

cucumberpeach · 31/12/2025 09:13

You're right about fruit teas.

Love goat's cheese, panettone and tiramisu.

Ambivalent about beaches.

Like spas but only if it's a seriously posh amazing one of the kind I have been able to afford precisely once in my life 😅

I’m guessing a nasty UTI? 😬

I think just the salt water in.......places?

blowthedoorsoff · 31/12/2025 09:18

Totally agree with going out on NYE- huge pressure to "have a good time", everyone gets pissed and emotional/sloppy, slurred drunken singing at midnight and then freezing your arse off trying to get a taxi home after having had to take out a second mortgage to cover the inflated costs for one night of the year. No thanks.

Flakey people who constantly text "we should catch up!" every few months but make zero effort to do so. Its like they want to appear to be making the effort but they never have any actual intention to do so, then you end up on this super friendly but utterly pointless text merry go round that goes nowhere at all.

Custard cream biscuits- they should be nice as they have custard in their actual name but they are nothing like delicious custard. They are dry and powdery and bland. Its like eating small squares of plaster board.

Iced coffee- it's cold coffee.......coffee that's gone cold. 🤮

Bird and Blend fruit teas actually taste of fruit. The cherry cola bottles tea is delicious. Otherwise, yes, all other fruit teas lie.
As do blueberries- all that gorgeous rich colour and wishy washy flavour.

Four toilets in a house.

JudgeJ · 31/12/2025 09:24

On this day can I also add NYE events, over-priced to just stand on a public street, long queues for the loos, if there are any, cold, wet, windy and exorbitantly priced drinks. Maybe a once in a lifetime experience when one's very young maybe but one grows out of it.

If there's a large family sounds ideal. My late MIL was adamant that if there were 2 toilets then one had to buy twice as much loo roll and that was wasteful, lord knows what she would make of the 3 I have!

Whimberries aka bilberries, the European version of the blueberries, are delicious, especially straight off the bushes, the popular blueberries are so full of water to get that sized fruit, no wonder they're tasteless, they just have a good advertising budget.

Welikebeingcosy · 31/12/2025 09:32

Baby showers.......so forced and dull.

X123x321X · 31/12/2025 09:36

Holidays.

Goat's cheese. 🤢
