We've done these threads before and it's quite cheery to have some virtual company. The hashtag #joinin will find similar on the likes of Bluesky and X.

For the purposes of this thread, 'on your own' means no one else in the house. But I probably should be inclusive and invite those who 'feel' on their own or alone. So all welcome.

I've had a leisurely breakfast and will be making myself a roast later. WITH YORKSHIRES. Otherwise I plan to watch Alastair Sim Scrooge, It's a Wonderful Life and The Holly and the Ivy, a marvellous film from 1952.

I’ve had a nice shower and a bacon sandwich - followed by chocolate of course! The cat is napping on the windowsill as the heating is on, and I am doing some batch cooking of BBQ pulled pork

going to find something to watch on TV

BallerinaFall · 25/12/2025 13:59

Hey guys a lazy start, I finished a Christmas movie i didnt care to finish last night, made myself some brunch and then went for a walk about 3.5k in the countryside around my home. I'm off to have a shower in a minute then fresh pjs on and I can open the puzzle I bought myself of amazon with some hot chocolate

martha79 · 25/12/2025 14:03

On my own, which I have been some years and was planned, but I usually get out of the house quite a lot - Parkrun and/ or a decent long run or walk. But I'm on a strict regime of rest after being diagnosed with long COVID (after foolishly trying to push through feeling dreadful for the last couple of months). So it's been naps, snacking, a bit of telly (All Creatures Great and Small and the Madame Blanc Mysteries Christmas specials so far). Did summon enough energy to cook myself lunch mainly thanks to Waitrose stuff that just needed putting in the oven!

I do have two cats, they've so far gone wild for: some catnip toys a friend sent, empty boxes, wrapping paper, ribbons, the smell of gravy.

I've not heard of the Holly and the Ivy film, will look that up.

sweatervest · 25/12/2025 14:08

i found a mc donalds that's open so that was a joy.
posted something for vinted which is a total delight as i managed to do the printy label thing and not lose my mind at qr codes and barcodes and i am non technical so that's a win.

i watched this morning and then loose women and i am going to stay awake for amandaland

also harry met sally is on later later and i haven't seen it for 928374 years so i'll watch that again tbh

happpy christmas!!!

The Holly and the Ivy stars Ralph Richardson and Celia Johnson among a stellar cast. Various streaming services have it, or it's available to watch for free at archive.org

Worked until late this morning. Cooked myself a roast (am veggie so it didn’t take long to make) and am now on the sofa with the dog, watching Home Alone which I don’t think I’ve seen since childhood and which is surprisingly enjoyable. Will take the dog for a short walk soon then maybe watch nutcracker.

Am off to stay with a friend tomorrow evening, but today it’s just me and the dog for the fourth Christmas in a row. I’m single; my remaining family don’t want to come here and I can’t get to them as I have to work and as they don’t like my dog. I’ve had offers from kind colleagues and others to spend the day with them but in my experience the only thing lonelier than spending Christmas Day alone is spending it as the charity case at someone else’s family Christmas dinner. It’s not so bad. I like living alone most of the year and it’s also nice to have a day to myself. I think it’s just the pressure of it being such a “family day” that makes it difficult.

TellingBone · 25/12/2025 14:37

I refuse invitations for the same reason @Hotel785634

Been in touch with everyone important to me and all is well. That'll do for me. Quite content here with my films and eats. 😀

@TellingBone Thank you

martha79 · 25/12/2025 15:05

I feel the same about invitations - there are friends I'd happily spend the day with if it was just them and me but I don't know their families well enough to feel comfortable with that. It can be lonely but as I often say to people, I've had far worse Christmas Days with family issues or in bad relationships than I've ever had on my own!

wavingfuriously · 25/12/2025 15:12

on my own but slept late and working through a to-do list of household stuff, decluttering etc., helps to keep busy..
HOWEVER now beginning to feel a bit down..😐 now begins the brooding

poopoobarneymcgrew · 25/12/2025 15:30

On my own second year in a row…. Went for a festive swim with my swimming group now alone with pups and a full tummy. I found last night hard so I just went to bed early, today I’m in a better place. Glad of this thread thanks OP x

Homebaby · 25/12/2025 15:35

I'm single, no children and few family so it's me and my cat today after my one local family member had to cancel plans due to illness. We're having a lovely day, she had a special breakfast and I had pain o chocolate. Popped to see relative who had to cancel then parked on the sofa in comfies with a selection of random snacks watching tv.
There are pangs of sadness that life hasn't worked out differently but am trying to look on the bright side and appreciate the peace and the rest (and having the tv remote to myself 😂) Plus the time spent with my lovely cat who although is still very active and mischievous is getting on in years now.
Wishing everyone on here who is spending today alone, physically or in a room full of people, a very merry christmas 🤶

YouBelongHere · 25/12/2025 15:48

Christmas dinner eaten while rewatching The Nativity episode of 'The Goes Wrong Show', then watched the next two non-festive episodes while it went down - haven't watched Season Two for a while so that was good.

Washing up done, nearly time for some yule log 😛

Feel the same re invites - my friend invited me round but she actually spends Christmas with her friend and their family, none of which I know 😂So politely declined and having a nice quiet day at home :)

TellingBone · 25/12/2025 13:52

Sounds like you're an essential service worker. In which case thank you.

Yes, fire service! Thankfully we're not as busy as police or ambulance today so we can still have a dance and play bingo and have a Christmas dinner. My fire team are basically my Family 2.0 anyway so it's not too bad to be working today!

Ladybird69 · 25/12/2025 16:02

I’m all alone. Have been for the past 5 years. Got a turkey crown etc in the oven but totally craving a Chinese 🥴 watching crappy tv and having a bubble bath this evening with a glass/bottle of fizz before starting on my new book that I treated myself to! Happy Christmas to you all.

TellingBone · 25/12/2025 16:10

Hullo and welcome to all the new joiners. I'm full of dinner so my mini Christmas pud will have to wait until later.

Time for a wee tipple I think 🍺

Amen to that @LadyLolaRuben

I am on my own because I'm working - I am in Seoul, South Korea. I'm a flight attendant for a Canadian airline and I have always worked over the holidays (often not by choice!). We left Christmas Eve, arrived early in the evening on Christmas Day and it's now 3 a.m. on Boxing Day and I'm wide awake. Time to have a tea and watch some Netflix - I am watching Black Doves with Keira Knightley. It's set in London at Christmas so I'm getting a festive feeling 🤣

SusanSHelit · 25/12/2025 18:30

I had ds with me this morning until just after 2pm, and my parents came for lunch. Everyone was quite delighted with their gifts and I found a pass the parcel Christmas sprout game in asda that was great fun in place of crackers. So the morning and early afternoon was lovely.

Exdp arrived to pick up ds at 2pm (early, I had said no earlier than half 2, so I made him wait with his face like thunder and shitty attitude until ds was good and ready to go. He was breathtakingly rude but I tried not to let it phase me too much).

Parents stuck around until just after 4pm so I just have the evening alone but it seems to be stretching out for an awfully long time without ds.

Especially thinking of him at exmils house with exdp, his sister, her partner and exmils partner. All playing happy families while he gets more hours of Christmas day with ds than I will this year. Bastard.

Still, I've polished off the honey roast parsnips and had a little Christmas pudding, and the cat was quite delighted with the leftover roast beef.

I'm working three 12 hour shifts over the next three days so a quiet evening is not a bad thing really. I'm just salty that exdp still has to try his level best to mar my Christmas even four years after I left him.

Here's hoping everyone else here is having a pleasant relaxing evening and eating all the delicious food they could possibly want, stress free!

This has made me put it on - I've been slacking on the Christmas films this year. But now the candles are lit and Home Alone 2 is playing 😊

Are you looking at it from the perspective of someone who is on their own this Christmas? Because you can have nice food and drink, no upsets with others, but feel painfully lonely.

Back21970 · 26/12/2025 00:37

I’m finishing off my evening with my cava.

The Soaps were quite good - Eastenders always does the best Christmas episodes in my opinion - rubbish all year round though 🤣

I’m 100% fine on my own but sending hugs to anyone who’s not as it can be a tough time of year ❤️
