I’m overwhelmed by sons kindness and want to share it

Hello all, as it’s Christmas and there is often so much bitterness directed at young adults these days for being selfish etc. I just want to share the most incredible act of kindness from my son.

My son is 24, my mum passed away 21 years ago, my son has no memories of her as he was so little. She was buried up in the north east where she spent her entire life and despite DH and I living down in the south we always made an effort to visit her grave on December 23rd, her birthday. It really mattered to me and the thought of her spending her birthday alone crippled me. This year DH and I were unable to travel, DH is unwell and we are caring for his elderly parents, there was just no way we could make the journey without comprising his health and treatment.

Today though my son, who lives in London and is spending Christmas abroad with his girlfriends family, so has really had to go out of his way to do this, sent me a picture of him at my mothers grave, and text “I couldn’t let grandma be alone on her birthday could I”, he lay beautiful flowers and told me he and his girlfriend just spent some time there.

Im completely overwhelmed by this act, he had no personal connection to her, it was wildly out of his way and no doubt cost him extra to do so.

I know it’s easy to believe many young adults are selfish and lack values but in the days leading up to Christmas I just want to share a little story that proves there are many good ones out there too.

Gosh that brought tears to my eyes
You've raised a lovely young man

Arlanymor · 24/12/2025 14:36

That's just gorgeous, you have raised a wonderful young man. 23rd is also my mum's birthday, so made me feel doubly warm. Thank you for sharing - it really does help shine a light in so much of the darkness we are currently surrounded with. Hoping your DH feels much better soon and that you all have a very very Christmas.

That's so thoughtful of him, what a great son you have. My DM also passed away when my DS was a tot, so this resonated with me. We are two days drive away (or a flight) from her grave so I visit onyl about every 4 years. During covid we started taking flowers to our local cemetery to leave for various other late folk. My DH comes too, on mother's Day, birthdays and Christmas to walk around talking to the headstones and reading about people we never met. It has been v therapeutic to ease the guilt we feel at not being close enough. Just a thought for you if you can't get there. My thought is that I'll bring flowers for someone else and it goes around, you know?
Merry Christmas and thoughts with you x

Ah @Crinkydinkyjust to add to the chorus of what a lovely young man you have raised. He knew how much it meant to you, what a truly thoughtful thing to do. Second thread of the day to make me cry.

Hope you have a lovely day and best wishes to your DH with his treatment.

RubyMentor · 25/12/2025 15:22

That’s so lovely what a credit to you he is

Dollymylove · 25/12/2025 15:24

That's lovely 😍 what a shame he didnt get to know his grandmother xxx

deeahgwitch · 25/12/2025 15:27

Oh @Crinkydinky how lovely is your son.
You reared him well. 💐

HeartyStork · 26/12/2025 09:23

There's a few good men out there OP, and I'd definitely say your son is one of them ❤️

AprilinPortugal · 26/12/2025 09:29

Oh OP that's lovely...you've done a good job with those two! I can't help but say it's especially nice to read this about sons, given all the gender disappointment posts I read on here when the baby is a boy. This is the proof that sons are lovely!

Countduckula52 · 26/12/2025 09:31

Such a loving gesture. What a wonderful son you have.

theresbeautyinwindysun · 26/12/2025 09:38

Oh this is absolutely beautiful. You must be so proud of such a gorgeously kind young man. Without doubt you’ve made a beautiful job of raising him.

cocog · 26/12/2025 11:01

That’s really kind of him. It’s actually lovely. Xx

financialcareerstuff · 26/12/2025 11:23

I think this is beautiful, and actually just as lovely if not even more of your son’s girlfriend. She has even less connection, and it sounds like she didn’t only support your son being away/changing travel logistics for Christmas with her family, but came with him to spend time at your Mum’s grave. She sounds like she is a special person who really loves your son and cares about you a lot too…. A keeper, hopefully! 🥰

mamap14 · 27/12/2025 12:05

How lovely, he is a credit to you, you have raised him well! Hope you had a lovely Christmas!
